  • not really expensive............ why???

  • can anybody explain to me why this kickass purple jazzmaster (by Dinosaur Jr. guitar god himself) J mascis piece of heaven can only be found as a white squier jazzmaster to my retailers??? Im on a budget but the purple is a must have

  • @propsonme probably because fender thought it was not selling that much but they probably said HEY its still an awesome guitar by an awesome dude lets just make a squier version to save money and so people wont be bummed

  • @propsonme they discontinued the more expensive fender version and released a squier version in a different color, cause thats the color j wanted

  • ok, great looking guitar love the red, but then the white parts are awful, I hate them

  • @bbaasje agreed - why do they have to make them so white?

  • OK, I know I should know it, but whats the song hes' playing at 3.25?

  • @peterthomson13 Feel The Pain

  • @peterthomson13 feel the pain by dinosaur jr.

  • The description above say's 'P-90' pups...Jazzmaster pups are not P-90s, there is suppose to be a very distinctive difference between the 2. I found this out by googling Jazzmaster pickups.

  • @musicmatty67 My local guitar shop labels their Jazzmasters as having P-90s. it's annoying. It's a pretty common misconception. they're actually more similar to strat pickups if I'm not mistaken.

I have the new Squier J Mascis on the way! I know it's not the same as the Fender, but I'm damn excited.

  • when is this coming out in the UK? the white version, squier I think which will be GREAT cause it'll be cheap.

  • Finally a decent guitar review. I play a lot of heavy distortion in the vein of Dinosaur Jr. but Jazzmaster reviews are always played clean. I hate that because not everybody plays just clean.

  • Hey Andy, could you guys review the Thurston and Lee Renaldo JMs? :)

  • There's a *Squier* J Mascis signature Jazzmaster in white with a gold anodised pickguard, floating trem and rhythm/lead circuits coming out very soon. Around £330 UK price, you heard it hear first....

  • @ClassicCutzOfficial I'm kinda more leaning towards that model to be honest, I'm hoping for some good reviews on it. I'm poor...

  • That tone is horrible!

  • I was waiting for andy to play 'Start Choppin', he didn't which is okay because he totally will when he demos the inevitable J Mascis purple marshall stack, right?

  • oh shit those are single coils? lol

  • @trumusichead Yeah. the covers are pretty big, however the pickup itself is pretty thin and wound very wide.

  • If it's the Sovtec fuzz/ EHX big license Muff, you are talking about, I got one and it is up for grabs!

    Cheers!

    P

  • It's cool to see a reviewer who actually plays the music of the artist the model is for.

  • I've never heard a better f*cking fuzz than this one :)

  • I think Andy is drunk

  • a green russian muff............ something i can never buy but want soooooo bad!!!

  • @pwhite102 Yeah, I like the biting grind and shape they retain with drive

  • The guitar sounds pretty nice, but the frets are ridiculous and the purple paint job is horrible.

  • Comment removed

  • Nice

  • what kinda pedals are you using with that guitar when u play with distortion neer the end? OMG I LOVE THAT GUITAR!

  • The tone at 2:14 is so clean! I would hate to make a mistake with that sound...

  • ok seriously, which fuzz is he using in the beginning? a lot of people are saying a big muff...but the question is, WHICH ONE?? there are so many! if its the reissue, props to you Andy for making it sound good, cuz mine sounds awful...

  • @screwdriva It was a Green Russian Muff!

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos ahhhh, no wonder it sounded so good! great playing as usual, by the way

  • song that starts playing at 0:59 ?

  • I play in a hardcore band and i love the jazzmasters look, would it be a good guitar for a hardcore band?

  • @bosserex I dont see why not. Just make sure you really kick the gain up a notch on your amp or use a really ballsy distortion. I like the DS-1 for old school hardcore because its kinda in between a Fuzz and a modern distortion so you can get those broken amp sounds from it...

  • @bosserex Yes. Jazzy's and Jaguars are good.

  • @bosserex

No, single coils are not good for heavy stuff.

  • @WoWintosh

    hahahahahahahahahahaha

    good one

  • @bosserex I own one and no it's definitely not good for a hardcore band. I use a Big Muff Pi w/Tone Wicker pedal and a Boss DS-2 (through a clean channel 50w tube amp) and it just doesn't get the sound i like on the fuzz/heavy side with the included single coils (which are actually nicer than most Fender stock).

  • Would this be a good guitar for stoner rock tones? Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Nebula, QOTSA, etc.

  • @Ombrenuit

It wouldn't be a poor choice, an SG would be a better one. But its all about having an overdriven tube amp preferably an orange :)

  • what song do you start playing at 2:16

  • @poopilentes54 Ever figure out what the song was, because I'm curious too. I know I've heard it before somewhere..

  • this guy totally looks like paul rudd from "i love you man".

at least when hes looking down at the guitar

  • @MiniDaab slappin' da bass

  • @MiniDaab No, Paul Rudd looks like Andy

  • @greekguitarguy man i wanna know that too lol.

  • That color makes me queezy.

  • woah, this is the first time I've ever seen Andy's face...

  • @chilil57

Do you even watch PGS videos?

  • la chitarra più figa del mondo!

  • I had one of these like 2 years ago, it´s scratchplate made it sound to harsh for the band so that´s why i had to let it go. But I did fall in love with the Jazzmaster cause I got a Classic Player Jazzmaster now. The purple flake paint still is one of the coolest colours I´ve seen on a guitar, I would get the guitar again just for that.

  • This guitar and the Page Hamilton signature ESP are the only artist series guitars I would ever buy. They're just so strangely unique.

  • sorry if I double post. What Fender calls the lead circuit is actually "up" on the selector and bypasses the toggle, volume and tone of the normal circuit. I never use the lead circuit, and neither does Mascis, apparently.

  • not nearly enough dinosaur

  • Fender describes the lead and rhythm circuits as the opposite of what you describe. The slider "up" position is considered the lead circuit and "down" is rhythm. The lead circuit bypasses the toggle and volume/tone knobs. Mascis himself doesn't actually use the lead circuit per another youtube video interview (he puts a pencil eraser in the switch). I don't use this circuit either as there are only individual pickup volume controls and frankly it doesn't sound very good to me.

  • Looks more red than purple, its really hot.

  • song at 1:40? really nice pregression

  • HA HA HAAA MOFUCKAS I just got this guitar new for $590

  • Is that a super reverb?

  • i soo want one how much for that ?

  • whats the song at the beggining??

  • @benjaminrichardshoop

it's "Where'd You Go" off J Mascis's solo album 'More Light'.

  • those are some ugly pickups. they just bulge and stick out like a sore thumb.

  • and jazzmasters

  • @nickhashair they are pickups... they aren't for looking at.. they sound fucking awesome. p90's rock

  • alwaysbsharps, they are not actually p90's. They are kinda similar, but they are actually wound very widely rather than vertically like most single coils. Jazzmaster pickups are like no other pickup, which makes them even more bad ass. On the not of this video, great demo, and thanks for showing heavy ass fuzz distortion and clean both, all of us wanted to see that probably.

  • the distortion/overdrive for that first minute sounds horrible

  • @loofonme It sounds perfect!

  • What Fender amp is it being used through?

  • @ErilexTube The amp that's sitting right there in the video is a Vibro-King. My guess is it's that.

  • Thanks :)

  • @BadAssociationBand looks more like a Custom Vibrolux Reverb to me

  • @Jamaican064 It's a Vibro King you can read the name. TheCustom Vibrolux Reverb has two speakers side by side. The Vibro King has four.

  • @IVI1ROSLAW Actually the Vibro King only has 3-10"s.

  • @Jamaican064

    It's a Vibroking...

  • How does Mascis get such great sustain on his jazzmaster, when the jaguar has very little sustain but yet they have the same bridge and vibrato?

  • Well for a start, the Jazzmaster does tend to have a bit more sustain than the Jaguar, which has a more percussive edge to it.

Secondly, I think using LOTS of fuzz has a lot to do with it. Big Muffs are great for that, and that's the one J Mascis is commonly associated with.

  • @PantheonLincoln

If a string snaps, does the rest stay in tune? Usually with trem/vibrato the whole lot goes out. Thankfully my Levinson Blades "Silver Streak" guitars don't, but I really don't bother with trem. Also has the Jazzmaster a slim neck profile? As most Fender guitar necks a very thick..except the 70s ones. Thanks.

  • Greatest Guitar I've played. I love it. Happy that I own one myself. :)

  • Please tag vibro king into this demo. its a good demo of the amp too.

Mu apologies if you are not actually using the vibroking

  • i have one of these its great

  • i love that nice thick sound

and i love J and Dinosaur

if i had 1000+ dollars i'd LOVE to own that guitar

  • @jorghad6 just bought it @ sam ash on clear out. Marked $849, I offered $600 and walked out with it. Great GREAT playing guitar.

  • what fuzz is in the intro?

  • This may be old news, but their "Special Design" pickups are essentially Strat pickups in an oversized bobbin. It's a tall, skinny pickup wearing two plastics "hats" as space fillers. It's like that for a lot of Japanese-made Jazzmasters.

  • thats why you get SD antiquity IIs on them after or any other cool pickups that really make the most out of the jm's real potential

  • @MainManAlex

Still, a japanese Jazzmaster has a very different sound from a strat.

  • Do a review of the classic player jazzmasters :)

  • all hail j

  • i have one of these and it sounds sooo much better than this

  • just bougt his guitar, sounds and plays great, was a big surprise when I tried it.

  • what fuzz did you use on this?

  • sounds like a big muff

  • whats the song at 3:25?

  • feel the pain by none other than dino jr

  • feel the pain by dinosaur jr

  • @Heliosophist

That'd be "Feel The Pain" from Dinosaur Jr.'s "Without a Sound" album. Tis an incredible record. Go steal it.

  • @Heliosophist

Feel the Pain - Dinosaur Jr

  • apart from the bridge and the colour, how is this different from any other jazzmaster?

  • Jumbo frets, Basswood body, Aluminium pickguard, flatter fingerboard radius

  • @maxrutc09 jumbo frets

  • His jazzmaster can sound really clean, sharp of dirty n whatever but this guy must have the tone right down or something stupid cause i dont think it sounds that great here

  • i think that it sound rad

  • That's the rhythm circuit.

  • shit sound

  • Wow, what a crappy guitar.

  • Wow, sounds nice. Though I wanna know what effects he's putting through that Guitar

  • AAAAANDYYY I SAWW YOUR FACEE !

  • what is the song 2:18 to about 3:00?

  • fender sucks dont even know why i clict this link...im out...

  • What're you, The Dragon's Den?

  • Lol! That was the greateast reaction to a stupid youtube comment in ages. I'm sorry, but I'm out P:

  • Yeah go and watch Ibanez or BC Rich videos

  • It sounds pretty bad, which is kind of disappointing, as I've been looking into jazzmasters, for my next guitar purchase.

  • What kind of pedal is being used for the distortion/fuzz here? Sounds hawsum.

  • Big muff

  • i wanna try to put some jazzmaster pickups in a strat bridge

  • what's the first song he's playing?

  • allright, found it out myself. it's "where'd you go" from mascis' solo "more light".

  • Can we get a review of the 66 RI Jazzmasters as well? Really interested in getting a sunburst one and refinishing it white. WIth a gold anodized pickguard... oh yes..

  • can we get a review of the sonic youth jazzmasters?

  • @heynicemustache Yes yes yes yes! A million times yes!

  • This sounds immense with that fuzz at the beginning.

I can't really afford a new guitar right now, but if someone can recommend some good Jazzmaster pickups to install in my current MIJ reissue I would be VERY happy...

  • curtis novak has the MOST options. can get you very close to sounds that may be hard to get with traditional JM pups. also... try jason lollar and BG pups.

  • this guy looks like a young john lennon

  • Those ain't p-90s

  • I don't think Fender would ever live it down if they sold new guitars with Gibson pickups.

  • does this guitar sound anything like the classic special jazzmaster. Cause I love this sound but I don't like it as a artist model

  • the first few notes on the clean mode was intense clear as crystals but i knew it already cause i listen to wilco and pretty much the only guitar nels kline uses are jazzmasters..

  • jazzmasters or jags? people

    i play blues and funk

    any comments?

  • jazzmaster

  • i prefer the jazzmaster, but if you play blues and funk, go for a strat, it's the best option.

  • Do you like a short or long scale guitar?

That's the major difference as far as I'm concerned.

  • I would try out both if I were you. Then you can decide from there.

  • jag.

its just a matter of taste though,

  • That guitar seriously lacks sustain (I mean the clean tone of course).

  • holy shit didn't think the clean tone on this J. Mascis Jazzmaster would be cool but it is! I'm considering it.

  • Ugh at some of these comments. P-90s ARE overwound single coils. This guitar has P-90s.

  • wrong, it has single coils with individual pole pieces in standard fender style.

p90s are single coils but they differ in construction by having a bar magnet on the bottom, giving them a different tone than fender-style single coils.

  • Indeed.

  • ianae86, P90s and Jazzmaster pickups have virtually nothing in common. P90s are smaller, are wound 2-3 times taller, and use screw polepieces with a bar magnet. Jazzmaster single coils are larger, the thinnest (shortest) wound single coils, and use alnico pole pieces - and the resulting sound is completely different.

  • I'm trying to decide between this guitar or an sg standard , i play classic rock and stuff like that.....???

  • Idk, the jazzmaster seems a bit too left-field for classic rock. But on the other hand it's more versatile if you want to play more genres.

  • i simply love jazzmasters and jaguars..

so i say go for the jazz.. but that's my opinion

  • classic rock?...definitely go for the sg

  • when are we going to have the elvis costello´s jazzmaster review?

  • Jazzmaster dont have P-90s.

They're Single coils, Like a wider/Flatter Stratocaster Pickup

Why does everyone Say P90s its plain wrong.

  • P90s just happen to be single coil pickups.

  • you are right zooropa, jazzmasters have their own style of pickup construction, essentially like a flattened out strat pickup.

p90s, while single coil, have a very different construction and sound than jazzmaster pickups

  • These guitars look AND sound fantastic! Gotta love the purple sparcle and matching headstock - you don't see that so much these days...

  • haha i have a big muff but a Solid state amp

  • What fuzz pedal is being used?

  • EH Russian Big Muff

  • wayyyyyyy better than the US big muff !!!

  • The rams head (second version) are wayyyy better than the russian from the 90's in my opinion.

  • this is the first time i see the guy behind pro guitar shop, i've always heard his voice. in the pedal reviews...

damn what a guitar...it's amazing. i just bought a jagmaster from squier.

  • it's a fender vibro-king

  • as far as heavy playing goes-sounds to hollow for metal, this is good for alternative sound.

  • beautiful guitar! the pickup looks kinda out of place, though. so large.

  • they're p90s thats normal :D

  • They're not P90's, they're Jazzmaster pickups. There's a difference.

  • Very true, like Fat single coils.

  • isn't that what p90s are?

  • I think they're look even bigger because they're quite high to compensate for the big TOM bridge and shimmed neck.

  • You're right.

Besides that they're too white and the lighting on this video make them look bigger, too.

  • from 3:24 to 3:40 he's playing the bridge from "Feel the Pain".

  • are all of these made in japan ..

  • The easiest way to get j mascis' tone is this guitar + a big muff and fender super champ XD(what he's using to record the new dino jr album)

  • A super champ XD?

I thought it was a Princeton.

  • don't forget the blue box

  • I HAVE THAT AMP AND A BUG MUFF! :D

  • why a thumbs down?

  • or the two cranked marshall stacks=P

  • 3:32 is feel the pain.

  • yeah your right about that pickgaurd/i was gonna get one for my metallic teal blue jazzer/dont think ill bother now/guitar looks red in this video/nice!//

  • jazz master .... j mascis

  • thats a beauty, except for that ugly pickguard.

  • love the demo, and would like to here a classic jag.maybe compare jag strat and jm.thru the deluxe
