  • 1:25 I don't know much about trombones but cant they just use a trigger for that position, 7th right? it looks like they have the extra tubing for it.

  • god i love this country

  • The day that I'll be King of a new country, this WILL and HAS to be the National Anthem of it!

  • Good trumpet player and great man.

  • @afrocurry a "good trumpet player"? you mean the GOD of trumpet players! ;)

  • Best fanfare ever

  • James Morrison is one of the most insane musicians I've ever come across. He play trombone, sax, and I think flute just as well as he does trumpet...dude is so good.

  • @KrazyTrumpeter05

he plays trumpet, bass trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, saxophone, piano and i think tuba

iv seen him play live multiple times

    he is amazing :D

  • what the name of the song his playing?!?!?!?!?

  • @carlosjtown Waltzing Matilda. Traditional australian folk tune.

  • Goosebumps at 2:29!

  • hahah, at the very end you can hear JM holding over on the 3rd of the chord just a hair. Great player.

  • there is nothing like the sound of a trumpet screaming over the big band

  • I've heard this many times, but this is the first time I've seen it. They actually CUT THIS out of the broadcast in the USA.... a superhero performance and they showed commercials instead.

  • @bbotzong it's because we in America have no appreciation for real talent... :(

  • when james morrison saw all the music textbooks that said a C above the staff is the highest note in the trumpets range he said FUCK THAT IMMA SCREEEAAAM

  • じーさん凄過ぎww

  • just watched james at the syd op house 3 nights ago. man, i never heard anything like it. top man, i'm totally a fan ..

  • For James the trumpet doesn't have a range :P

  • haha 2 baritone players and 223 normal people

  • i would pay a lot to play like that

  • Damn, I love Maynard but this knocks the poo out of his 1976 Olympic piece--which is said to have been lip-synched anyway. Australia 1, Canada 0, LOL...

  • Sweet baby, sweet!!!!

  • I find it it remarkable how the tune contains a reference to Waltzing Mathilda. Very well made. Great stuff!

  • Just AWESOME!!!! I'd love to get this fanfare in a better sound quality, anybody has a clue where to get it?

  • @maniack68 no.

  • wow... and I still can't play a high d. :(

  • i played this with him at QPAC too, and he is absolutely amazing

  • i played this at the QPAC with james. im not boasting. it was just a highlight of my life.

  • Does anyone know how to get the notes for this?

    LOOOOOVE this song!!!!

  • @maiahi0 well :P now you have the notes you bastard! :D

  • Oh my god, cant get enough of this, its just AWESOME!!!

  • สูงได้อีก...

    แปดปีก่อนทำไมมันดูเก่าอย่างกับสามสิบปีก่อนเลยวะเนี่ย

  • A trumpet players wet dream.

  • @ElectronHexagon Why watch porn when you can watch this guy:P

  • always enjoy listening to James's fat ass sound! until i start reading the comments below. Man, 1/2 of you idiots are not schooled in the art of the trumpet. Don't put down someone until you have traveled around the world doing what he did in his life time and better.

  • There are definitely not enough trumpets. The more, the better.

  • its f3 on piano cause thats concert pitch

    a trumpet g is concert pitch f

  • no,..James Morrison rocks

  • Comment removed

  • Why are there so many famous musicians named James Morrison.

  • It's technical artistry and can be admired. But music is something different for me.

  • it makes me cry any time I hear it

    brass instruments rock!!

  • its f3 i think

    so its not thhhhat high

    impossible for mee!

but not impossible to so many people

fact is that he play reallly good

and holding a f3 that long is not easy i think^^

  • In an interwiew James says, that it is a G - but still f3 on piano.

I think it is very nice playing. The attacs are so nice!

  • Yeah, cause trumpet is in Bb and piano is in C, so f3 on piano is g3 on trumpet! :)

  • Omg, i only know 2 trumpet players that can play that high that well. Arturo Sandoval and him. People think Maynard Ferguson is good...but his tone that high just isnt as good...not at all.

  • Maynard could do it in his early days. Arturo could never do it. Not enough control or short term endurance. However many lead players can do it. Ingram, bergeron, Craig Johnson, Mike Vax, Scott Englebright, Paul Cacia, and many more.

  • O.O You seriously just said that Artruro could never do it!? You obviously haven't heard many of his recordings. Like his version of Maria. Or theres a recording of him playing with Dizzy and he does some pretty sick stuff.

  • Yes I have heard them. He still lacks the control in upper register and endurance to play this all the way through. He could probably record it like everything else in short sections and different takes. Like he did on maria. It just a statement of fact. he deffinently could not do it today.

  • Hahaha, i dont think Maynard could either.

  • id like to see you do it at all you clown.....and i bet he could play better using his ass cheeks now than you ever could or will be able to

  • Which of the many trumpet players we were discussing are you referring to? I'm not bashing anybody, if arturo can't do it he can't do it. Thats all there is to it. Don't be retarded.

  • The intro of the fart-knockers in suits was too hoidy-toidy for me

  • saw him tonight... i love him :)

great guy... i was there for the soundcheck...he came in, sat down on the stage and took 6 different instruments, played and then he said hello xD

  • HOW THE HELL DO HE DO THAT!?!?!

  • seriously, why are there so many knockers of James Morrison? The man is a legend and musical genius. Not just trumpet either. his piano skills are amazing I swear he could turn his hand to any instrument and dominate he is so talented.

  • @ TorgeirFausken: I've a played a concert with Tine last year and she is indeed a good player but not on the top! She has a nice sound but she also played some sh..t at the concert...

  • Awesome The guy Is good at high notes. I can hardly play 2 octaves above the central do

  • Banjo would be proud.

  • I'm not a fan of JM's playing generally, but all credit to him here. He nailed it!

  • girl at 0:08 covers her ear lol

  • nice

  • and yet he still sticks out in the band he is amazing!!

  • I hope we have something like this in the London Olympics and not some shit multi ethnic bollocks, dreamed up by a white middle class guilt ridden social worker.

  • @admanphoto There is no part of that statement that is not ridiculous.

  • @manwalrus There is no part of your statement that is not ridiculous

  • c4???

  • am i the only one that has noticed that us girls don't play trumpets much? how come im like always the only girl trumpet? im the only girl trumpet in my whole skool! rawr it annoys me!!

  • we have 3 in our jazz band alone

  • she's really good, but no where close to james morrison, its not a gender thing, its just that morrison is among the best in the world.

  • Well, it's just girls on flutes mostly.

I think it's because trumpets/flügelhorns etc. were used in armies and there weren't any female soldiers back then, so a trumpet became more of a male thing..

  • how good are the sax's steps in the swing section?!

  • 00:39 is the best WAAAHHHHH!

  • you must be the coolest fucking trumpet player on the planet......

  • Actually, I know a few adults that can scream like him. It's pretty amazing how they can play so crisp and in tune. The only difference is that they are becoming pretty old and can't hold those notes for how long morrison can.

  • that's just unholy. i think i need to go clean myself up.

  • That has to be some of the most impressive screaming that I've ever heard....WOW!!!!

  • Is this available on a DVD?

  • hey raldyV...look up jazz trumpet giants...its a quad of arturo, morrison, fadis, and marsailis all playing trumpet...its really awesome...arturo plays using no mouthpiece at all 0.o

  • That's so fucking amazing!!

  • GOD.

  • ...that is possibly the most cleanest screaming i have ever heard...it sounds like hes having no problem at all or will ever have a problem lol...if you like this vid...look up arturo sandvol and dizzy gilespie...pure magic.

  • I would LOVE to see a Trumpet Duo of James Morrison and Arturo Sandoval.

  • Yea. True good point. There are people that can just scream all day long but don't have good tone or can read well.

  • ok I always wondered if he is using a small mouthpiece to get these high notes. And if he is is it considered skill?

  • There is a large debate concerning small mouthpieces. A lot of people swear by them, but I know and have heard of others that can play double c's with large mouthpieces. However, no one can deny that, no matter what mouthpiece Morrison is using, he possesses a tremendous amount of skill.

  • Morrison does use a very small and shallow mouthpiece. Having said that, a smaller mouthpiece does help a bit, but mainly in getting a cleaner, brighter lead sound. It's not an easy way to instantly be able to scream, small mouthpieces can effect endurance, and can be harder to pitch notes on. They have their pros and cons.

  • at 2:30, he hits the highest note, double C

  • ok yeah, what i said was a bit unrealistic... sorry about that, but look up "duke Ellington 1975" or "Steve Reid Trumpet High Notes" its a bit crazy how high they play, and you're right, to sustain it that long would be extremely difficult

  • how good is james morrison!!!!

in relation to how high it is, I've heard james play way higher than that, but there are people out there who could play the whole thing an octave higher, Cat anderson for one. but don't get me wrong the morrisons are sick

  • hmm a whole octave higher? Hmmmm parts of it yes but others I'd have to say would be near impossible.

  • ale mu góra odpala

  • more like lips of platinum

  • That man has lips of steel

  • Waltzing Matilda.

  • damn...i think i just shit my pants...incredible intonation.

  • ok, I had chills all over my body for the entire first 1:30. I am dead serious

  • same

  • Amazing! That's splendid! not only Morrisson but also all the cats swinging like hell! Brilliant, inspiring! Congratulations down under! Fantastic!

  • You know that his highest note here is a super E?????!! (one whole octave above a top E!!) :s

  • i don't mean to be rude but where is the super E? the highest note i heard was a concert Bb

    but i may be wrong

  • Right when they go into the swing section he rips to up the E above double c.

  • where exactly?

  • Comment removed

  • nope at 57, he goes from double G to double A lol, only a major 2nd interval

  • My mistake. You're correct. I don't know what I was thinking, but when I played along (two octaves down haha), I thought he went up to an E there.

  • no problem... I did the thing where you sing the note and I just went over to the piano and found it. It is DEF a super E. I've just checked again now : )

Hehe which octave concert Bb are you talking about? If it's the 'top c' (in Bb trumpet speak) then that would sound verrrry low in this ;)

  • this is amazing...

  • this is filthy!!!

  • filthy in the coolest kinda of aussie way =)

  • ahh i see... how much was your MDT? i would like one if i get to play with 10 octaves!

    zm

  • THis site should answer your questions: ww scottware c0m au \ trumpet

  • this is not fake ive seen this legend live twice he was goin just as high if not higher wen i watched him... u can play that high on a real trumpet u talkin bollocks

  • exelente fantastico

  • ive met james :D this peice is so HARD! i dont even know how he hits that high of a note...

  • yeah its true ... i play trumpet and i still dont believe this that he can play on trumpet better than goD :-D

  • I can hit it and play that piece - its not that hard - however holding the note with the power he does is another story Lol

  • Are you talking about his stuff or the fanfare accompanying him? If you are taliking about his, I seriously doubt you could hit those notes mr youtube maestro... Most pros would find that very hard...

  • I can hit it and hold it - not with the same intensity and strenght, however i have as originally when at school the piece was chosen for a final presentation opening and i had to see if i was able to do it, it was decided it was far to much for me. Some people can play high and some can't. I am one who can, even though i have not touched a trumpet in about 2 years. I wish i took my music further, however i got into university and left music behind.

  • brilliant.

  • Why peopl argue about 'who's the best' is beyond me. All the players you mentioned are fantastic in their own right and are an inspiration to the rest of us. No one mentioned Allen Vizutti, Maynard, Clifford Brown, Dizzy, Arturo Sandoval, Alison Balsom...the list goes on of trumpeters that amaze and inspire us. Why argue who the 'best' is...just appreciate the fact we're able to hear these amazing musicians at the top of their game.

  • We were talking about sheer skill. Dizzy, Sandoval and Alison Balsom don't even belong into that discussion. I don't deny Marsalis is a special trumpet player, and his playing displays tremendous skill, but if you listen to his and then to Nakariakovs recordings, you can't tell me with a straight face that Nakariakov doesn't have more skill. Nakariakov is doing things with the trumpet no one else has ever done before.

  • dude Was Hitting Them G's lol

  • never again

  • wunderbar::D

  • anyone who plays the trumpet knows how hard that is

  • sounds like maynard

  • fuck Wynton, Morrison is the bomb

  • Woooooooooow!!!

Jazz + Fanfarre + James Morrison = sound bomb!

  • HOLY SHIT!!!!!

  • Um, all that stuff wasn't played live. It was all pre-recorded. interesting note, the Sydney Symph was there miming along to a track the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra recorded :)

  • So was all the choral parts and Tina Arena...

Sorry. It's the truth. I was one of the "Singers". Don't give me a thumbs down for telling the truth.

  • Yes it was pre-recorded, but my understanding is that James Morrison is playing with John Morrison's Swing City band with kids chucked in for good measure. Maybe some of the players there are from the Sydney Symphony but i know the trumpet player in red that is on James Morrisons right is in Swing City, and i believe so are most of the other players

  • incredible, perfect performance on the biggest possible stage

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!

James Morison is undoubtedly the best trumpet player in the world!

  • *cough* marsalis *cough*

  • the greatest trumpet player ever

  • *cough* marsalis *cough*

  • *cough* Miles davis *cough* ;)

  • nah. Miles is defenitly the most influential but he was great for his righting and his style. But sheer skill. Marsalis hands down. Get the full version of him playing carnival of vence like 7 min. Listen to the whole thing. At one point he plays so fast that it sounds like there a two guys and one is accompianing. It's almost note for note the FLUTE!! version. Amazing.

  • sheer skill? Wynton cannot beat the best classical trumpeters like Nakariakov and Hardenberger.

  • you nub you would say that. Just cuz thats all they can do doesn't mean anything. Wynton is way cleaner and his tone is much better. If you can't hear the difference then ur dumb

  • just now. There's no one that has better tone, especially in the lower register, than Nakariakov. He's way better in finger dexterity and toungueing as well.

  • mate wynton is good but i'm afraid there's no beating andre or eklund... or hardenberger. sure, wynton can play some pretty impressive stuff but for an actual performance he's nowhere near the top x

  • darn james morrison and his amazingness :p lol he's freekin sweet

  • James Morrison is a Silver Back Gold Cut Entertainer

  • sweet as

  • wow!!!!! great!

  • cool fanfare muhahaha

  • I love this video

  • By far my favorite part of the opening ceremony. just a shame that sir william dean in his declartation mixes his words and hits the mic. overall best olympics ever!

  • James Morrison - chops of steel! Cool fanfare, Matilda never waltzed like that before.
