@TheDeadlyAvenger In order to update your iOS version, you must restore your device from your backup. That will set it back to an Apple-controlled device, and you can update to the newer iOS version. But, you'll lose the ability to jailbreak again.
@TheDeadlyAvenger As for what jailbreaking gets me, I'm going to have to explore that. I'm off the Apple reservation now, so there's no restrictions on what I can install on the device. I can install apps that don't need to pass through Apple's draconian approval process. (Yes, that can be dangerous, so I have to be careful.)
One nice thing so far (for me) is being able to use VLC on my iPad to watch video in containers other than MP4.

Jail breaking pretty much gets you free apps! Along with other fancy shmancy things such as custom icons, themes etc.
