  • Hi there) Check this out. I like deep stuff like that.

    /4qBzqT2YyJQ

  • why isnt mdickie games in?

  • these games sucks

  • why about wizard 101 dude those games sucks so bad

  • has anyone ever played the game endeavor? that's friggin awesome...

  • i love pixelish type games...

  • Iji and Spelunky are both awesome! I'll have to try the other ones out!

  • i like these games remind me good old times :)

  • HEY.

    Where is YumeNikki?

  • Who did the awesome punk track for the iji clip?

  • limbo is beast right now

  • second game looks awsome, too bad it was release 20 years earlier could have been a real hit

  • the graphics reminds me Another World and Flashback.

    nice :)

  • Well, the best indie game in my books of all time is Minecraft...

  • Iji has been the highest rated game on yoyogames for almost a year now o_o

  • DIE YOU VANDAL!!

  • Iji has pretty good in-game music (kickass ending song, too)

  • Iji looks nice. inspired by the old game 'out of this world'

  • @ballossx

Is it so hard to read the title?

  • I played Iji and Spelunkey before I saw this, and I loved them both. I loved Iji so much that I went through the entire game with no kills just for a different ending. It was no easy feat, I assure you.

  • I freaking hate that shop keeper in Spelunky...

  • 2:37 is that garland?

  • free fun fun adictive game _ at channel

    try it and get adicted

  • Jumper 3 and Flail came out in 2008. They were both really good (especially Flail), and I'd probably put them in this list.

I would easily put Iji in first place. I haven't played the other games in the list, but DAMN, Iji was insane. I cried at the end because the story was so beautiful and sad, and because the amazing game was over. Can't imagine the other games being any more enjoyable.

If this was a 2007 list, An Untitled Story BETTER make first place. I like it more than Cave Story.

  • The 8Bit Killer looks like fun and cool also!

  • Iji was an amazing game. I always used to play indie games before i got my PS3, now, not so much :(

  • Why yes THERE are .... learn to spell dude.

  • lol the small screened game looks like DOOM!

  • Spelunky looks like the spiritual successor to La-Mulana. That being said, no wonder it's so highly ranked.

  • very cool list. Rescue: The Beagles looks amazing

  • are these free games still available?

  • Yep they should be

  • @linemaster1988 Definitely. Check their websites.

  • Spelunky is an amazing work of art.

  • Totally agree with your #1. Spelunky is a work of genius. Can't say I agree with 8-Bit Killer, though.

  • that spelunky game looks alot like La mulana

  • I absolutely love Rescue the Beagles. I still play it pretty regularly. It's just really simple and addictive. I'd love to see it on the iPhone. Iji actually got game of the year from our viewers last year - it was amazingly in-depth, especially for a game developed by a single person.

Thrustburst is so hard - it makes me want to punch babies.

  • iji rocks !

  • I LOVE 8-Bit Killer. I downloaded it last year. The music is SICK.

  • Yes because single person development teams should be able to create nextGen quality graphics

  • I guess you don't know what indie games are meant to be...

  • Landertron will be released soon. It has taken longer than previously thought as the final product will be worth waiting for. Will be posted on youtube soon.

  • indie games aren't big due to advertising on big sites... only WOM... thats why games like call of duty and such get so many sales, its a good game, but amazing advertising to back it up

  • I'm surprised Cave Story wasn't there.

  • Cave story wasn't 2008 I believe.

  • @fordben Yeah, cave story came out quite some time ago.

  • lol 8 bit killer vid sounds like pokemon :))

  • Nice list, I love Indie game too and so sad that many people prefer big game than Indie game.

    Sorry about my English :X

  • @vsea123

I actually found out something really sad about gaming in general, why the Final Fantasy and Mario remakes get known and indie games, even big games like ZotE, get ignored. It's the marketing. I read in the latest Game Informer of what someone in the business said. A game can be great, well thought out and coded, but it doesn't matter. These days, the majority of gamers know it's out there because they've seen multiple commercials of it or are familiar with the product.

  • oh nice you like the old rapture stuff too?

  • Yea...I'm tired of another Final Fantasy remake, and I'm tired of another Mario remake...that's why I like Indie games because they are original, there are a few indie games that I don't like, but most I've played so far are decent and deserve some recognition.

  • there are some very good indie games but a ton of them are absolute trash.

  • @weglarz

The reason there are alot of trashy indie games today is because those people come in all for the fame of being a game designer, not realizing that there's no real fame to begin with. Also, game development software is free to download now, so alot of people go in and make alot of beginner mistakes without being taught how to make a playable game. I wouldn't mind playing a bad game as long as it's playable, and this is where new designers are making mistakes.

  • The best indie game is about to be released, its called 'LANDERTRON'. Look out for it.

  • @shakey30000 didn't find anything on it.

  • those are the proof that graphics alone doest make a good game.

  • All the games listed here were released in 2008, if I'm correct Cave Story was released in 2004 so that's why it's not listed, still an awesome game though :)

  • All these games are released in Game Maker 7...nice stuff...

  • I am greatly disappointed of your decision to put Iji as the fourth best Indie game of 2008.

  • it deserves 1, eh?

  • try halo zero...

  • Spelunky is like the best game ever :D

  • What about "Crime life 2"???

  • What about Action Doom 2?

  • 2008?

    sure this isnt 1988?

  • idiot

  • 8bit killer is great

  • The "Spelunky" is the best from all of this... I mean the most fun to play =D

    Great Job guys!

  • From these, I played Thrustburst. Spelunky looks very cool!

You should try Cave Story! Great 2d platform game!

  • All of these games were excellent, my favourite of the bunch being Iji.

I fully agree with your list here, good choices.

  • I have a similiar opinion. Unbelievable how despite the game being linear, Iji has a very nonlinear execution. From little things like a few words to big things that I probably shouldn't say due to spoilers. I found on my third playthrough that it isn't just being passive and aggressive that gives interesting changes. Even the ending, despite being the same each playthrough, will be different based on what you do in the game. Definitely a brilliant idea. Stats and extras are nice, too.

  • that spelunkey game looks like an 8-bit indiana jones game lol

  • i love iji !!!!! but i wish she could run faster

  • what about seizuredome?

  • "Die, you vandal!" :D

  • I've gotta try 8-bit Killer, it looks great!

  • What about World of goo? It kics the ass off those games.

  • It isn't free, it even costs like 20 buck =p

  • @jameskond every game is free on pc

  • what music is playing for Iji

  • The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers

  • is it a remix, doesnt sound like the original

  • My bad, It's The Rapture - Killing. And officaly speaking this is a remix also: The Rapture - Killing (2manydjs Remix) but that one is hard to find and doesn't sound that diffrent

  • Why is iji only at 4? it should be at 1

  • You fool! What sort of brass balls do you have to try and steal from the shops and brave their shotguns?

  • Oh hell yes, I love spelunky.

  • Soooooo old school and fantastic at the same time. I cut my teeth on games like this growing up and now they are nostalgic flashbacks. Thanks for posting!

  • Nice games :D

  • James, do you watch ByteJacker? If you don't I strongly suggest you check them out.

  • Yes I watch ByteJacker at least once a week and I totally love it =)

Even though I was in the Indie Gaming scene for a far more longer while with Indie Gaming Blog and TIGsource
