  • I"m a practicioner of USA Goju Federation - we definitely use weapons

Most are Okinawan (Bo, Sai, Nunchaku, Tonfa, etc.) but we also use Escrimas (usually the first weapon we train in). Very nice kata. I'll need to incorporate parts for my nunchaku test (in a few weeks) :) thanks.

  • performance is good but i never heard if there is any nunchuk kata in gojuryu, any way it was good.

  • GoJu Ryu means Hard Soft way. Kara te is empty hand and that is a loose translation in itself.

  • this is Tetsuhiro Hokama's dojo kenshikai so hombu in Okinawa.

  • there kata's that use almost all the weap's learn your trade

  • that was brilliant couple of loose areas later on but other than that. brilliant. is there anywhere with this as a tutorial in either printed/photos or video form

  • Do that standing on one leg and I'll be impressed :>

  • @parkxu Also here is the original name and description:

    Okinawa Kobodo Nunchaku Kata

A nunchaku kata filmed in Okinawa at the Kenshikai dojo. Very interesting twirling action using the center cord.

  • ByFar the Best demo of how to use a nunchaku properly! One nunchaku, Strong movements and no freestyling!

  • @parkxu This video has been on google videos way before it came on youtube and also had a different name i can't remember but your right it isn't goju ryu

  • Wow.......Absolutely flawless O_O

  • The Nunchaku should be hold at about the end of the piece. If you hold it in the middle it is easier for spin i,t but you lose the streght and the reach!!!

  • wow, you can definitely see the power in every movement

  • Karate means Empty hand

  • Goju means "Hard Soft"!!!! No tienes ni idea!!

  • Twirly wirly

  • NOW thats how its supposed to be done not flashy but powerful enough to shatter bones

  • You have to be in control to use an uncontrolled weapon. I like nunchaku. Most people cannot utilize the body's power behind the weapon, however. This is a good example of using power in simple strikes and blocks without the usual flashy motions.

  • there are no rules as to what you can add to goju ryu.

cant you just appreciate the guys skill with the weapon.?

  • Good job man! I've been doing nunchaku for about 1 1/2 years but I'm not that great.

  • this guy is good

  • the dojo seen in this video is Tetsuhiro hokama's , it's Kenshikai goju ryu.Hokama sensei is master of goju ryu ,kobudo and okinawa kenpo, he is not well known outside okinawa , though he is one of hte best sensei and a sort of hollyman.

  • WHAT THE HELL??

What the hell kind of Goju-Ryu is that? Who is this guy? I am with you parkxu, you're right. Goju-Ryu is Goju-Ryu..I mean "Hard and Soft empty hand."There is no Nunchaku katas in any Goju styles. Goju-Ryu has just 12 Katas, That's all..

Jesus, I've never seen the like of it;-)

  • It is not Goju, it is Kobudo. The creator of the film mistook it for Goju because it was filmed at Hokama Sensei's dojo. Hokama Sensei is a master of both Goju and Kobudo. Also, there are many more then 12 Goju Kata. There are 12 more prominent Goju Kata, however many other less known ones exist. The Taikyoku kata for example. O'Sensei Kim often taught the less known Goju Kata. It was said that he would only show them once, and yet his supply was never exhausted.

  • in okinawa weapons were taught first, then empty hand combat, the reason being that if you lost your weapon, your next line of defence would be empty hand. for this reason kobudo is taught alongside karate in some schools.

  • i like the single simple strikes but i think the camera man need some practice! :S

  • This man in the video put on an armor vest. It seems to be he doesn't trust to his own abilities to use nunchaku. :)

  • it is a cotton tank top maybe this is considdered armour when subject to your weak and pathetic assaults

  • its a normal vest you pillock!!!!!!!!!

  • Kobudo is an art that is available to karate students, in some dojo. Traditional dojo, however, certify karate and kobudo SEPARATELY. Think about it like this: At a university, a student can elect to "double major." That is, earn two degrees in different disciplines.

  • This is outtake footage from the discovery channel show "top ten martial arts" from a few years ago. the film crew was in Hokama sensei's dojo to film his classes. Gojuryu and Kobudo is taught together in his dojo. The nunchaku kata was just filmed without preparation, he was just asked to do the kata on the spur of the moment for the benefit of the filming. So if he made errors or seemed nervous, I think you should give the guy a break.

  • really really awesome

  • That kata was impressive.

  • i'm with you ayejacks.. where's the action?

  • Kaishaku71. Yes the nunchakkus are of Okinawan origin and may be prcticed by karate people, but why then are there two separate arts, i.e. Karate and Kobudo? What is your style, grade and experience may I ask?

  • So JIMMYBUSHIDO I am a sports afficiando eh? I think you'll find the spelling to be afficianado! However, what do you know about me, that allows you to be so presumptuous about me? Just who and what are you in the martial arts world? Please tell us.

  • I really liked ur neck pass.

and those wrist spins were really fluent.

    good job to the 'chucker

  • So let me get this straight. Kara = empty and te = hand. So karate is with weapons?

So what is kobudo then? Oh ..... I remember, it's weapons.

  • another "sport karate " afficiando who has no idea what real karate is all about

  • Completely wrong. Our dojo rarely takes place in tournaments. If you took Goju Ryu then maybe you would realize it's actual use.

  • sorry , my reply was for "colemandina", three comments below mine, not for you.

  • kara te means empty hand !!!!!

sooooo you practice your weapons training without weapons, so your enemy doesnt know or steal your skills !!!!!!!

    get it ?????

  • Actually most traditional Goju Ryu dojo practice Kobudo (weapons). And yes the Nunchaku are definately a traditional weapon. Other than a few hick-ups in his kata, it is a fairly good demo of actual strikes with the weapon. You will notice he is using actual wooden nunchaku with rope, not some hokey Bruce Lee chain, or flashy chrome, and no baton twirling TKD moves here.. maybe that is what confused you.

  • i do shorin-ryu but god do i love goju ryu

  • i dont think that i can say what i want to say about this video, i would probably get banned....absoloutly dreadful to say the least

  • nice!

  • The nunchakku surely has little to do with Goju Ryu?

  • I know thats like not even goju ryu thats like kobudo which is all weapons like nunchaku, bo, tonfa and sai

  • i believe the goju practitioners were exposed to the nunchaku for sometime because it was one of the okinawan farm impliments developed into a weapon.

  • You are misinformed, Of course the nunchaku has something to do with Goju. Goju is a direct descendant of the original Te of Okinawa. Where do you think the nunchaku came from ...... JAPAN??????

  • I was referencing Colemandina comment, in my last post.

  • very nice congratulations

  • wow very nice and fast ! 5 stars

  • The Goju world in Kansas is sadly totally corrupt and run by a money hungry selfish man. I lost 6 years of my time and countless dollars before waking up to the truth of Sam. Beware Kansas MA students!

  • In any case, that kata is awesome:-)

  • That was cool that looked so much better then the one's u see at the US tournaments which r just a show of speed with no pratical application this guy could do some damage

  • Goju Ryu (hard and soft...taken right our of the bubishi) DOES have weapons kata....tenryonokan, shishi no kanshin (sorry if i spelt it bad...i forget),even with kanas....

  • Sorry, but you've been misinformed. There are 12 original empty hand kata in Goju Ryu. Kobudo, however, is the study of the old Okinawan weaponry. There are several ryu-ha (syles or associations) that specifically teach these. Kobudo should NOT get morphed into any empty hand ryu-ha, even though some dojo teach both.

  • Goju Ryu has no formal weapons content in its system at all. Some Goju stylists choose to augment their karate practice with that of Kubudo/kobujutsu, but it is not taught formally as part of the goju system. There are 2 streams likely to be sources of kobudo which goju stylists can follow and that is either the Taira/Yamani stream or the Matayoshi stream. Neither however is taught as part of the Goju Ryu syllabus, as this was and is purely an emptyhand system.

  • tho it's cool...i gotta ask...do all nunchuks practitioners hold their breath like this guy does? or at least he looks like he is doing tt...either tt...or he's constipated

  • cool..pretty impressive..goju...where did it originate from?

  • Goju is from Naha in Okinawa. Founder of style was Miyagi Chojun. Style base on White crane and monkfist boxing kung fu from fujien province, china. As well as native okinawan martial arts. Oh and for the comment above regarding the use of weapons, some schools do teach 'Kobudo' (Bo, sai, tonfa, kama and nunchaku)

  • Goju Ryu does technically mean open hand, but there has always been weaponry in the style. This has at least been the case in the teachings for the recent past.

  • @esknives Actually goju-riyu means school of hard and sotf dah

  • "goju nunchaku kata"? How comes? I thought there was no weapons in goju.
