I didn't mind the acrobatics as much as you did, but you have a point. listened to the original Etta James and see what you mean. "Making it your own" and "rendition" shouldn't mean changing it completely. Like another melody... Like Eva Cassidy's version of "Over The Rainbow" has become the new standard - no one seems to know the original Judy Garland anymore. I like CA mentioning and giving EJ credit though, that is respectful and correct.

This performance versus more recent ones shows how much she's matured as a singer. All that cheap pop star trilling is gone- along with so much more control and power now. That gospel rattle sounds good on a powerful gospel singer but it's gotten old in every cheap wannabe. In eight years- Christina grew up, took lessons, finished growing physically, It takes years to make a great singer. In another 8, maybe she'll quit this pop crap.
