It doesn't matter whether they were British, German, French, Australian, Austrian, Turkish etc They were human beings and I think thats a fact that too many people forget these days. RIP lads, we're forever grateful for the sacrifice you made
It's very easy for people on here to bicker over who had the biggest and best army and who were the real heroes of the day. I think it is more important for us to recognize the true valor and perseverance that ALL soldiers displayed in both the World Wars. This is how wars are started, through petty arguments over national pride. We should all hope that the world is never plunged into this kind of hell again because I am not quite sure people possess the strength needed to survive again.
@currle06 That was well said. I don't think We are as strong today as our parents and grand parents were then, and judging from the comments one reads on here, if they fought at all, it wouldn't be for long. Really sad
2) America gave the Brits and French a TON of supplies in WW1, which after WW1 you didn't want to pay back. THAT is what sparked the U.S. to make the "Laise Fare" for foreign involvement in war after. We were essentially done with you.
3) Hitler could have been stopped MANY times. He could have been stopped when he marched into Austria, but you did NOTHING. The Sudaten land, but you did NOTHING. YOU let Hitler do what he wanted, YOU are to blame for WW2.
1) Was not our war, was a European war, we are North America. European countries NEVER let things go, you were always having wars back then and we wanted no part of it. Stop fucking fighting
France had the biggest army in the world at that time, they could have easily marched on Germany and brought Germany to the peace table. But instead, they sat behind the Maginot Line, fired a couple of shots while Germany invaded through the Alps.
British Prime Minister Chamberlain was as useless as a silk hat on a Pig, Hitler played him like a Piano.
Then when Hitler starts rolling across Europe you ask for us to enter the war. Why the fuck should we? You didn't even pay us back for WW1.
We fought the same enemy, we may not be friends, but we didn't kill eachother, and i believe that who won the war was not the generals who told their men what to do, but the men of the Allied forces that fought. the war would not have been won without all of them, not mattering where they were from.
@mrceebees14 You are missing the point by taking on a a monolithic mindset. Australians in the Pacific were the first to defeat the Japanese Army on land (Milne Bay) and by doing so contributed a huge psychological boost to all the Allied forces. Australian troops were directly responsible for halting the Japanese drive on Australia (Kokoda), NOT US troops. Your guys deserve the laurels of ultimate victory in the Pacific, but not for saving Australia, we had already done that. Simple facts.
@TheCairnslocal ....Darwin bombed dozens of times, Japanese checking out Sydney harbour and as far south as Hobart, Tasmania....the Germans moving around in the seas off western Australia, Aussie's in all sorts of strife at home and in battle....thank god the USA came, we were a long way from saving ourselves.
@Rokket Where are you getting your facts mate?? And why the pro-American interpretation? Aussies were doing considerably better than US troops in battle and this is simply a fact. The US entering the war changed the dynamics in our favour and the US numbers ensured victory but any enemy invading Australia was facing a protracted guerilla war in very harsh terrain with loooooong supply lines vis a vis Vietnam or Barbarossa. Never write off the Aussies, Aussie and get your facts right!
@mrceebees14 Gidday. US history often neglects the fact that US troops first saw action in WW1 under Australian command at Hamel. US troops were often under the direct command of Australian Lieutenant-General Sir John Monash. Monash's victories are often attributed to 'Black Jack' Pershing and Haig. Even Monash's personality traits and habits are often wrongly ascribed to Pershing. Australians respect the US and we do NOT think we did it alone. Monash changed the tactical face of warfare.
My G Grandfather fought this front, in the 23rd Battallion and returned with w medals from Australia and England for a single handed take over of a post to allow troops to progress. I am going to see this field this year and cant wait.
Respect to you My GFather's brother was killed at Broodseinde and unfortunately never recovered Read 'Monash - The Outsider Who Won A War' for an insight into how the Aussies commander shaped them and us. A very underrated hero, John Monash is responsible for the Allied victory in 1918. No exaggeration. Australia forever.
what about the brave German soldiers that died for the land That they love so much to give their lifes has everybody forgotten about Germanys sacrifice? My great great grandpa was a German major on the western front and I am very proud of that and he died of war wounds in late 1930s
Let Germany commemorate her own, if she wishes to. Australians were the spearhead of every Allied success in 1918 and every major battle victory came under the command of the Aussie General John Monash. Incidentally he was the only 'British' (he was staunchly pro-Australian), commander knighted in the field by an English Monarch in 300 years and remains so to this day. The British (and Aussies), were doomed to more from Haig (1916 debacles) without him. Monash stopped the slaughter.
@MISHMIAH true, but in the chaos of war you always think your country is right, even if they aren't so if you were a german in the war, would you enlist to save your family?
@MilitaryAircraft101 I think that propagandists are very adept at convincing people in wartime that the enemy is out to destroy them utterly. This is a common ploy to get people to enlist. It is difficult for the aggressor nation (as Germany has commonly been), to argue they were fighting to protect themselves initially. As aggression turned to dismay with looming defeat there is no doubt this fear became a little more real for them. Monash was of German Jewish extraction, born in Australia.
@300spartansrule you know, history is only spoken by the winning side, im aussie, so i naturally think they were the bad guys on the western front. but yes they weren't the bad guys (the german soldiers) they, were doing their country pride, just like the aussies were doing, and for the sake of every man, woman and child, i hope we never have a WW3.
i live in Passendale and Ieper region ...the military cimetries ...and graves are daily reality to me ... Sometimes one i have some free time ... i walk into those cimetries ... i am 48 years old now and i am happy to live in a free country ...i am happy though i feel sad when i see those endless white rows of gravestones, white grave stones, white colour of hope ...yet all those young guys, regiments of Canada, New-Zealand and Australia of very young guys who gave their life, ...i honour them.
My great, great Grandfather and uncle served on the western front. I seen these pictures of one of them about 2 years before the war and one taken about 2 months after he came back. I shit you not he was almost completely bald with wrinkles and droopy eyes, it scared the shit outta me seeing it. The shit they went through.

im a german and im ver angry about some parts of the german history and im realy feels with every one who lost family becouse of the german kaserreich or the 3.reich.
world war one wasn't germany's foalt or any other european nation the war was caused by a string of events and the main reason was the world had to many powers and they all allied them selfs against each other. and world war two was caused by world war one and the humilation put on germany but ofcors you feel bad for the pepole that died there
WW1 wasnt anyones real fault - If you had to lay the blame it would probably go with central powers but it was really an imperialist struggle.
On the other hand WW2 was the darkest period in history and germany will always be known for it. Hopefully we can learn from the evil and never let it happen again!
Im sorry, but WTF! The central powers (excluding Austria) had nothing to do with the start of the war. I blame the Russians trying to get their greedy hands into the Balkans. They did not even like Serbia that, much, the main reason they went in was to win land and influence in the Balkans. Germany did not want to see their ally the Austrians crumble, and thats the only reason they joined. I think if the Russians stayed out, it would not have been WWI. It would have been the Austro-Serbian war.
What a great tribute to the 330,000 Australian soldiers that fought; the 60,000 who died; the 155,000 that were wounded; and the 4,000 taken POW in France, Belgium, the Gallipoli peninsular of Turkey, and Palestine during the First World War. We will remember them.
RIP All of the men in WW1 and 2. I know Its About Australia but As we know there were many other Country's. Britain, France, Canada, Belgem, Holland, South Africa, India ect. I will not say that the Americans because they came to lat and did little.
"Can You Hear Australia's Heroes Marching? is a national war memorial song and a tribute to the ANZAC spirit of mateship, courage, and sacrifice." - comment by the author of the song
It is an Australian war memorial song honouring Australia's war dead. Why would there be russian, japanese, french...and so on. You wouldn't see anything other than Americans on an American war memorial song. It is called 'Can you hear Australia's heroes marching? I don't think you can get any clearer than that.

Pretty much the same circumstances for the Canadians being part of the British Empire at that time. If Britian was in the was in the war so we were (and you) without much other reason. Both of our countries fought a European war by association.
I'm from the UK and as far as I can see those troops were exploited by the British Empire to serve its own ends. Those that survived the war were left on the scrap heap. We need some realism when assessing the mistakes of the past so we don't repeat them again. This song is an attempt to glorify these people's deaths, i.e., give their deaths some meaning, when in fact the only reason they died was to try and protect vested economic interests.
Actually they wanted to prove to the rest of the world that they were a glorified nation, and that they were not only capable of providing soldiers and support, but providing damn fine ones at that
No one can give the exact casualty numbers for WW1. But if you go to Google and type in 'total casualties for WW1', there are websites that give you the casualties for countries involved in WW1.
Can You Hear Australia's Heroes Marching?' is a national war memorial song and a tribute to the ANZAC spirit of mateship, courage and sacrifice. The song is timeless and honours the memory of those who have died in the service and defence of Australia in war. The song does not glorify war or endorse conflict of any kind. The song simply highlights the sacrifice of many Australians who died in the service and defence of our country in war. (Comment by Peter Barnes - author of the song)

Remember that all of those Aussies were volunteers.
The only all volunteer Army in WW1.
Yes, as usual the British take all the credit.
Imperial War Museum in London, hardly any mention of Australia let alone General Sir John Monash who Montgomery said was the best General in WW1.
His leadership, care for his men, organizational abilities and tactics turned the war in the Allies favour after Le Hamel and Amiens.
