To hold his kevaler while he is pullin trigger, give gunner direction cuz MMG create too much smoke and its hard for gunner to see his target. reduce the movement of gunner body caused by the MG recoil. and in war time save live since too ppl on each other provide less target area for enemy to spot or fire on.
