My 2 cents on why the s2000 failed? No automatic. When you look at the competition, 350z (nissan which is also not a premium brand and also had a midclass price) and the RX8 (Mazda about the same) they both offered a auto gearbox and were profitable enough to continue production to even this day. The s2000 however never offered such a feature or cabin comforts as the other 2. It was a no nonsense sports car. It was too hardcore for the average person and too expensive for the average boy racer.

The S2000 stylists obviously tried to appeal to everyone, and in doing so made a car that appealed to no-one.

The looks were in total accordance with the typical Honda looks at that time, very plain and simple. And that was totally alright.

If I could've afforded a roadster back then (instead of some normal hatchback), I surely would've considered the S2000, but then again ... looking at the price tag of the S2000 and the MX5, I would've probably chosen the MX5, even if it was much less powerful. The price difference of the S2000 was TOO harsh.

Every other car has to give good reasons why to put so much more on the table.

BMW or Benz have no problem, they put more money and more class into the car.

Honda was never a premium brand, it was a sturdy low class: good for daily beaters, but not for showing off when cruising around without a top. The price tag was aiming at the middle class, where other, mostly national brands have good standing = no success.

That being said the miata is not a bad looker either i just really dont like that goofy smiling hamster grille. I also believe its short on power but for the price it offers a great value. Steering feedback is really good. I just dont consider it even in the same class as a s2000.

Name me a performance Japanese car and I'll tell you a European car that will eat it for breakfast. Even Japan's "Godzilla", the GTR, is only fast for the price, there are still many euro cars which will outclass it in any race.

Like I said before, Honda tried to make a car that does everything well, but in doing so made a car that does nothing well. Boxster beats it at styling and power, Z4 beats it at being an FR cruiser, and Elise beats it at being a light purpose built sports car.

@jimtimings I bought a s2000 because its what i wanted in my sports car. 6 speed manual gearbox (no vaginamatic for me), nimble handling, fun to drive, very few on the streets (i like the exclusivity.), a high rev engine (this is also a reason i like bmws), track performance (i can run similar track times with cars that are much more expensive), reliability, easy to work on (no dropping engine for bolts-ons) and crisp timeless design.
