  • renbourn must've been something, geezuz

  • Nice playing...always liked the Hermit/Black Balloon era. Nice little 12 fret Martin too...

  • Excellent! lovely playing

  • beautiful playing. just 'discovered' this tuning doing a bit of slide-playing.

  • Beautiful!!! I have always loved this song ever since singing it for a madrigal dinner. Wonderful job

  • absolutely very nice fantastic - thank you

  • This is a really soothing version. I can imagine laying out in a rowing boat, under a moon-lit sky, drinking a glass of chilled white wine, listening to this and just slipping away...

  • @LarryMcN

now that's strange because I don't hear it that way. Instead i think of it as more Dartmoor-ish, dark, foreboding, etc, similar to what appears to have inspired your film. Not white wine-y and gentle at all.

I wonder if something i'm doing makes everyone think i'm into simple gentle love music in general or something. . no way. give me dark any day! :D

  • @troubleclef

you're a great player, Tony, one of my utube faves- saw your comment, was compelled to add. Wonderful rendition of Renbourn's arrangement- and I do agree the song is quite dark in nature, almost sinister..if not actually. I think the title is a clue...I think, it's an acknowledgment , if not an homage, to the how shall I say, "dark side of the force"- while I wouldn't agree philosophically, as a musician I love and appreciate a good piece for it's ability to convey

  • @raggidedg

heh heh, um, well, I hope it's not an homage to the dark side, quite. foreboding, atmospheric, maybe. :D

  • Hey wow.. Nice i want try this too but i have small skill in fingerstyle :) Bravo

  • Very nice playing indeed, I also have a penchant for the open Gm tuning as well.

It took a tremendous amount of dedication to play this piece of music and you have done a masterfull job! Bravo!! Nice guitar as well, it sounds brilliant. I saw Renbourn

play three times in England during the late 80's!

  • @slubberde

thanks. i've had the pleasure of seeing JR a couple times myself. Chatted with him afterwards as well. Super nice guy.

  • You play that magnificently. You really helped me to play it too, when you mentioned that Renbourn uses a capo. Can't believe you're not, because it makes the stretches on this piece a LOT easier. I almost killed my tendons trying to stretch five and six frets! (he capoes this at 2nd fret, if that helps anyone).

  • I think when I finally got around to learning this from the book I hadn't listened to the track in quite some time so the tonality didn't sound suspect. And I don't recall whether the scores says "Capo on 2". I don't think it does.

    thanks for watching.

  • Reminds me for Stairway to heaven :P i dunno why ;D

  • Really enjoyed this piece... thanks for sharing!

  • Really great job! Sounds amazing!

  • thanks, man

  • aaaaw that's such a beautiful tune.. I used to play it with my father (flute and guitar).. it was so groovy..

    <3

  • ...wow. i want to play that soooo much!!!! but i cant figure it out, but your really inspiring!!!!!!

  • thanks. mel bay really ought to reprint JR's book that has this in it. maybe some time.

  • I bought Mel Bay's 'British Fingerpicking Guitar' just last year containing this piece and others by JR, Bert Jansch and Davy Graham. I think it's still in print.

  • sounds like a good book. i'll have to look for it. cheers.

  • thank you so much

  • thanks for posting this. I enjoyed it very much.. it reminds me of my college days. great rendition!

  • great job! I like it very much...

  • What a fine rendition! Thanks so much for posting.

  • Marvellous! played to perfection.

John Renbourn"s playing on this renaissance album makes you realize what a master he is.

I bought it recently. A must have book for string lovers.

  • JR is the boss. thanks for watching

  • Agreed. Best guitarist ever : ) Best guitar ever. A Martin 000-17S or 00-17S? No Sapele there (not that there's anything wrong with Sapele). A pretty rare instrument though. I always liked the white purfeling around the top.

  • best guitar piece ever!!

  • Do you use your pinky at all on your right hand?

  • not unless it's necessary to play a non-arpeggiated chord on 5 strings. funny you should mention it because there's a thing i'm working on right now where the score calls for just that in two places so i grew my pinky nail out. The piece is "Rosto Colado" by Paulo Bellinati.

  • Ok, I just started this song. It sounds cool i like this song by john and also the mist covered mountains of home. You play it really well too.

  • So you mean to say that in this recording, you were playing with your nails, and not your flesh? Is that so for all of your other recordings as well? That's a surprise to me.. (though I guess it does explain the unique sound you get out from your Martin)

  • yup. nails. with flesh, of course, but mostly nails. my main instrument is a classical nylon string.

  • I notice that the bass note are relatively soft -- the thumb nail is at work as well? And while I'm at it, I may as well ask: what are your thoughts on finger picks (metal or plastic)? The reason I'm hesitant to grow my nails out is that they're very soft and I'm afraid I might break them! But I'll nevertheless give nails a tryout... not too long, but long enough to see how they work out in getting a tone similar to yours.

  • they'll get stronger the more you use them and take care of them. i never used finger picks after the first bad experience with them when i was 17 or so. but give them a try as well.

  • Yeah, my nails keep breaking, that or I accidentally bite them lol. Bad habit.

  • i love this song so much. i'm just wondering though, is this the same version that is in the black balloon book?

  • I learned it from a John Renbourn book, so probably the same one. However he plays it with a capo (not sure which fret) so mine is in a different key.

  • you should record this to mp3! i love your version man.

  • thank you

  • I know this as the Old Waits Carol.

I actually found this looking for the Kate and Anna McGarrigle/Rufus Wainright version of the song (which I strongly recommend). This was beautiful though mate, ta. Will track down the John Renbourn version as well.

  • thanks. it's on an JR album called "the black balloon"

  • Sounds flawless to these ears (unlike my posts!). Its great to hear someone who seems to be into all the same sort of stuff i like.

  • yeah this is nice too. Good to get the variety, and an idea of what can be achieved. thank you.

  • Great.I'm glad that you chose the Martin.Renaissance pieces sound best on Steel-strung. Do you ever use steels on the Taylor hybrid?

  • thanks. Well, you'll get some arguments about that...but certainly for tuning in open gminor it's best to work with steel strings

No, the Taylor is strictly nylon.

  • Beautiful stuff. You make it look so easy but obviously you have been working hard at your guitar skills for many years. I have been playing around with this tuning 3 months now and getting nowhere but i will endevour to follow your video. Many Thanks,

  • i love the way you play this, it has inspired me to try and learn it, though I'm still working on it.

Thank you for playing so well

  • is there a cite that i can learn to play this

  • Simply lovely. John Renbourn's beautiful music lives on.

  • indeed. thanks!

  • i've actually never heard this real song

but i listened to your version and got the chills halfway through

you're really talented and you played this song beautifully

  • Man that was totally amazing!

You've played my favourite acoustic song tastefully and perfectly executed!!!!!!

  • Wow. Really clean and beautiful. Bravo!

  • thanks

  • OMG how can u be just a guitar lover? You're so clean and make it seem so easy!!! After i saw you playing this Renbourn's just keeping your sight to the infinite i could hang my guitar to the wall and sigh. Great. How much time do u play every day?

  • thanks! I play anywhere from 1 to 3 hours a day. probably averaging under 2 hours, with a couple days off per week.

  • Wow, I wish I had this as an mp3. It's beautiful and absolutely haunting.

  • From Italy ..... I love your music and you play very well !!

    Thanks

    Marcello

  • thanks!

  • you rock man!!

  • it´s music that comes from the deeper of the soul, from the deeper of the light that discover the meaning of living. Thanks

  • Now that is so beautiful, so well executed on the guitar, you play long sections without even needing to watch your left hand, that is masterful, I really loved your playing, thank you.

  • wow absolutely beautiful sounding, very nice, its my first time hearing this song, and i gotta say you did a excellent job

  • Wow, I've been looking for this piece for long years, I love it since I heard it in Renbourn's album. Do you know if it is original by Renbourn or the theme is from the Renaissance? Your version is great, it sounds even better than my Renbourn's old cassette! 5 stars. Thanks a lot

  • I guess it's an old folk tune that JR gave the full theme and variations treatment. So the variations are entirely of his own creation but not the underlying idea or the theme. Thanks, but it must be time to replace that cassette!

  • The guitar's voice is perfect for this music... and played victoriously! :)

  • This is where perfection becomes magic !!

  • Excellent. I learnt most of this tune years ago (when I used to play) and never got it half as good as that! I doff my hat with respect to a good rendition of a difficult (is any Renbourne easy?) fingerstyle piece.

  • thanks so much

  • Hahaha, loved your intro re Boris Karloff! And the rest of course, which is most informative. Could we have a little smile at the end of each performance please? LOL!! Cheers, G*

  • you're perfect and your sound with that ridicolous mic is fantastic. why don't you record a cd sharing it by some open art project?

    five stars.

  • thanks. i'd like to. need connections though (or a hell of a lot of do-it-yourself know-how)

  • wow! I love it!

    Valentina from Italy

  • thanks, babooshka. (i'll check out more of your videos shortly, but i really like your voice on that one)

  • where did you study at? I'd like to play like you hehe.

  • I love your videos, but have you ever thought of playing electrical guitar? I get the feeling you'll play awesome!

  • i've just learned of this tuning about a week ago. i've been playing guitar for about a year now, i've never heard a tuning so perfect with the style i want to play. you are an amazing player, and i definetly look forward to watching more of your videos!

  • thanks. keep on pickin'

  • you should play in the streets, people will love to hear this stuff because it's not around. classical guitar is lovely.

  • Absolutely love it!

    5*****

    best wishes

    jesse

  • super .. super .. super. beatifull..!

  • I like very much this Renbourn arrangement.

    Your sound is wonderfull.

    Friendly

    Pat

  • Thank you, Patrice. I just checked out your version too. Very nice.

  • I like Renaissance-music !

And you play it very very beautiful!

    Thanks for sharing!

    best regards,

    wolfgang

  • Thanks Wolfgang. Wow, 3 comments in a row from fine guitarists.

  • Beautiful interpretation of this piéce very difficult to play.Bravo Eric !*****

  • thank you, sir

  • It sounds great, the tune do sound very mediaeval, no Boris Karloff there just very good guitaring.

  • thanks. i guess it's more of a folk melody but JR certainly brings out the classical elements in his fine variations. I believe he states in the book that it's an old English carol.

  • Nice music, very well played.

  • umm, trebleclef- this is fantastic!! love your comments on the thing too..Boris Karloff, indeed!! very funny. keep on doing it; you're an excellant player/musician.

And this is a difficult piece to play.

  • thanks!

  • Another masterpiece!

  • No doubt. So far, though I like many of them, this is my favourite Troubleclef's video. The melody is so beutiful and the cleanliness of the sound is so impressive... It is strange to use steel strings with Renaissance music, however... In short: congratulations and thanks.

  • i wonder if its too late for me?'

do you guys know of any 40 year old who made a band and succeeded??

  • you tell us to look at the details. Where exactly are they ? Cant find anything

  • to the right of the video box you'll see "About this Video". To the right of that you'll see "more info". Click that.

Oh how I wish youtube would not minimize that box. In the early days they didn't. There's plenty of space on the page. I don't understand why they did that.

  • J/K...Once again you have outdone yourself. I think you are my favourite classical guitarist on here...Peace!

  • niiiice.

  • That was excellent (although I had to re-start the video twice after getting a serious case of chortling from your "Boris Karloff" comment!!)

  • Great music and playing as always! How do you record your videos. They sound very good. I need some advice for my own recordings. Thank you for sharing your music with us.

  • Creative Labs Ultra webcam $100

Logitech USB mic (model AK5370) $30

Windows Movie Maker (came with the mediacenter pc i own)

so as you can see i certainly don't do anything fancy. i'd like to have a camcorder and then mix a fine audio track on to better-looking video but all that stuff is time and money.

  • That mic sounds great! I can't believe it's only $30. It's now on my list of gifts to self. what may I ask is that clip on the headstock of your guitar? Is that part of the mic?

  • nah, that's a tuner. it's called an "Intellitouch".

  • you play divinely. How come youre not famous..assuming youre not??

  • thanks. Well, i can't really answer that question I guess. cheers.

  • I guess that on Youtube you actually are famous. :)

BTW, I've got nothing to add but "Amazing, as usual" =]

  • Really beautiful.

  • That's renaissance! Great lute atmosphere. More of that please.

    greetings

    Hans

  • Beautiful!

  • what planet or dimension are you from?

  • I vote the best guitarist on you tube!!!!!!!!

  • bravo

  • And I bet Bouris was bobbing his head all the way to the crypt. Most relaxing and excellently executed (of course). Faved, 5 St- aw, you know...

  • thank you flyinghorseknuckles

  • Liked this A LOT. Renaissance and Baroque music sound so pretty on guitar, IMHO.

Congrats on your Sox tumbling the Rockies!

  • Beautiful. I love that kind of music. ;)

  • really beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing that with us.

    Cheers

    Eric

  • impeccable playing, as always, 'clef! for those renbourn fans watching this video, that rosslyn clip from "rare performances '65-'95" is back up...hurry and check it out before grossman and his vile henchmen catch wind!

  • i hereby retract all slanderous comments i've made regarding stefan grossman's exercising of copyrights in order to have his vids removed from youtube, as he has recently joined (under the name "gtrworkshp") and has posted a good number of clips from various dvd's of his!

  • I'll check it out.

  • what richlitwin said! I too, look forward to listening to you every evening! uma delicia total!

  • thanks again

  • Absolutely amazing is all I can say! I want to come back as you in my next life!!! I would love to be able to play this way. There is no way that you're self taught. I play, but it's nothing like this. You inspire me to go full-on classical. The sound and finger picking style is extremely tranquil and I dig coming back to your site daily to watch you play.

On a different note...glad to see the Sox kicked arse!!!!

  • thanks for your kind words. i'm not self taught. i took lessons for years and years.

    woo hoo. go sox!

  • this is divine..can you play some of the songs slowly so we can learn??

    thanks

  • thanks. well in this particular instance it would be best to just get the book (see details) and learn it slowly yourself. I can see the point of learning a shorter, simpler thing from a guy on a video, but this is way too long and ornate.

  • cant find them. Are they in your site?

  • Muy bien ....great rendition ...5 stars

  • That was great! Thanks very much!

  • wonderful!!~

  • great ! ;-)

  • bravo!

  • very well done

  • TC - what type of classical guitar do you have?

  • the classical is a taylor ns54ce. this video is not with the classical. see video details for all guitar info in any clip.

  • Excellent. I love this tune.

  • thanks, man.

  • that's a good surprise.

  • Magnifico. Medieval. Otro tipo de alma.

  • It took me back in time. Nicely played.

  • Dear Boris.. :) This is just beautiful! A gem!

  • thanks buddy. glad you liked it. i gotta sit down and listen to some of your latest things too which i've been meaning to do. cheers.

  • Great as usualy

    Ciao

  • Happy Halloween!

  • same to you Cindy Tahllulah.

  • absolutely amazing - you are a benchmark to reach ! ill be there one day

  • For some reason, best known to myself, it puts me in mind of Stairway To Heaven... and I can't say why!! Excellent stuff as usual Tony

    Lynn From Scotland

  • hmm. not sure how that is. probably in some of the scale passages in the minor key that are similar. actually i think the tune may be Scottish, fwiw

    thanks for watching

  • Finally, some Renbourn well played on YouTube. Its about time somebody did justice to this master. Bravo.

  • there are some very fine approaches to the master here on youtube, imo. and I thank you.

  • Boris Karloff- haha -you don´t have to hide your light under a bushel, and you know that you´re an excellent guitar player. Thank you for this. The King is coming home and finds all is well. Berti

  • thanks Berti

  • Yeah, quite a bit of the touch of the old anthony phillips about that one .. nice!

  • Wow! damn that was good.

    Love the medieval sound.

Was this really a death dirge for the Colorado Rockies?

  • possibly....

    thanks!

  • Very nice! This is a type of piece I find most enjoyable.

  • once again excellent!!

  • aghh...alternate tunings...I can't follow along!!! LOL. That Martin has a great bright harpsichordy sound!

I enjoy Boris Karloff reminiscent songs!!

  • yeah. thank god for tablature is all i can say. if i tried to learn that from standard notation with only 2 of the strings being at their usual pitch (3 and 4 are still d and g), that would have taken much longer. as it is i've worked on and off on this for months.

  • Wonderfully played. We should do a video of one of your songs...photography and classic guitar go well together. Thanks for sharing another very well played tune.

  • excellent as always!

  • So soft and beautiful!

    Thank you

  • thanks

  • lol Boris Karloff

  • Does that book include the other Renbourn you played previously? Fantastic tunes -not in the 'Hammer films' kind of way- I'm thinking of buying it indeed. Thanks for making known this music!

  • unfortunately no. strange because it belongs in that book but "the mist covered mountains of home" is anthologized elsewhere and i think i grabbed my copy from a tabledit site any way.

    thank you!

  • No it isn't! uma música "mal assombrada" or "haunted" as you tried to convince us...

but yes...it seems I'm on an old abandoned garret full of spiders'webs! hahahah kidding!

I love medieval sounds! Good next Witches day Tony!

  • happy halloween to you too Vera. And thanks for explaining what "mal assombrada" means. I've come across that phrase before but never figured it out.

  • Loved it dude. One of my favorites from you. Bravo!!!

  • i like your description! beautiful piece
