Begum Akhtar was far far superior ghazal and light classical singer than current lots of all singers put together except K L Saigal. K L S was the best ever ghazal and light classical singer both male and female singers taken together.

I was in my early teens & was mesmerised when she started with "Koylia Mat Kar Pukar,,," & moved her head to one side with her diamond nose ring shining..One can die in peace with such memories..

i am a great fan of MEHADI HASSAN SAHAB and GHULAM ALI SAHAB. they are both great.and there are so many others ...old and new.BUT ALL OF THEM IF PUT TOGETHER DONT REACH HER KNEES.(BEGUM SAHIBA KE GHUTNON TAK BHI NAHI PAHUCTE)and please forgive me i dont intend any any disrespect to these stalwarts.i really died for mehadi hassan saaab and ghulam ali saab but begum saahiba was simply superb..but alaas her legacy is gone....why none of her students could carry her GAAYAKI..THANX MAHAKAVI

totally wrong buddy...i have very rare recording of ustad ghulam ali khan when he was only 12...he was singing bandish with his ustad bade ghulam ali and ustad barkat ali khan..n mind it u will dont beleave how a child can sing like that..he was born ustad..no 1 can beat him...

I think he's referring to Ghulam Ali the ghazal singer, not Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan - who was a brilliant classical musician.

What a brilliant rendition - kya baat hai! One piece of trivia I can share is that the ghazal is set to Rag Chayanat. The combination of Faiz's poetic brilliance, suron me dubi hur hui Begum Akhtar ki maussiqi ka jadoo aur Chayanat ki lachak...jannat ki huron ko bhi rashk hoga. It cant get any better than this!
