Rufus and his Loudon do have their differences, expecially in relation to Rufus' sexual orientation. But i think this song is more a representation of a father's love for his child as well as an oberservation of Kate's relationship with Rufus being a maternal one... Kind of in a way Loudon is admiring her being a mother but also like "hey those are my tits get your own! they were all mine before you and your sister came!" The song is actually more lighthearted than anything.
Thanks for posting this. I've bee a Loudon Wainwright fan since the early '70s but I haven't bought any of his more recent albums. This makes me want to correct that oversight. He's still "got it."

gay ain't born. you can turn gay and turn straight so how is it born? also if you are molested as a young boy by a man then it's more likely that you will be gay! It's more complicated than just being "born gay".

I think this song turned him gay. If you were a kid and had to go through grade school and high school with this song hanging over your head, you'd end up gay too.
He's really good, but very different styles. Martha wainwright (his daughter) is also a singer songwriter, with a still different style. All Wainwrights are singer songwriters.
This has always creeped me out. Kind of cheapens and reduces the beauty of a child breastfeeding to something weird and fucked-up. Apparently Rufus likes it (the song).
"Ienvy you". Says it all and all need said. He just says it better than we can. Sucking on a breast is nice! There lies the whole of phsycoanalysis! Doesnt make us gay or straight. He is a funny songwiter.
Notice the last line "look down on us and flash a Madonna smile." The mother was tending to "look down" on the father, and was deliberately coming between father and son. It's all packed into this little song, superficially humorous. Loudon is an artistic genius. In his other songs too he desperately wants his children to feel his love for them, which he was unable to express otherwise, because the mother pushed them apart. It's crystal clear in the documentary as well. Fascinating...
Apparently, the song is not only a sweet( strange to some) expression of his "jealousy" towards his infant son breast feeding, but he also took in a bit of breast milk at the same time! Father and son sharing mom's wealth. It isn't meant to be so literal, nor does it reflect the sexual orientation of Rufus in adulthood. Get it? Got it? Good!

Saw Loudon perform this a few years ago. He introduced it by saying that Rufus is more of a "pec man" these days.

Brilliantly goofy, and so very, very human, like so much of LWIII's work. Loudon Wainwright is the Kurt Vonnegut of folk music.

This song has nothing to do with being gay or straight. He wrote it when Rufus was a baby about how Rufus liked to breastfeed.

This was written when Rufus was a baby, quite obviously, it's about the father being jealous of baby. Rufus describes it as it a 'beautiful vision'
