This is very helpful! :) I'm an ISFP, and my mom's and ISFJ. We're very alike, but also VERY different in some ways. This pretty clearly outlines the functional differences, and it really rings true... I feel that maybe being raised by two strongly SJ parents may have influenced me to develop some more orderly habits than what you might expect, but I am most definitely an SP! :)
i'm pretty sure i have intuition of sorts as my main function and i think introverted intuition more than extraverted intuition as it's funny i can really see extraverted intution in this friend of mine though i dont know how to tell exactly if it's dominant or secondary. but yeah i think if you're generally 'clever',. sorry but the more i read about intution vs sensing to me it kind of seems like quite clever (sensing) and far cleverer (intuition), then you like to see patterns with mbti.
I use this so that people make sense...at least the patterns are much easier to recognize. I don't enjoy talking to people and getting to know them. It's hard for me to remember all the specifics without some reference point.
Excellent information. I'm an INFJ who is looking for a compatible career. I chose to go into teaching and being around so many people everyday was fulfilling, but draining after performing in front of the class so much; so I'm at a desk job writing reports. Have any ideas on how to go about it for INFJ's? Thanks.
@sirah14 INFJ's pursue many different types of careers. If you still want to be fulfilled by people, but don't want to be drained by people, there are many other careers you could still choose from.
And am I correct if I think that your first functions (which is for an ISFP > Fi and for a ISFJ Si right?) is like the fuel you burn on and your other functions(Ni,Ne,Fe) are what depletes it? Or is it more like if someone's ISFP extraverted feeling will be draining? Or should I think more general in a sense that everything is draining but only some things will make you feel great because of the successes you've made due to the fact that they were easy for you. Im quite confused as you can tell
@vncnzo If I recall all functions drain you but that every function is governed by a certain area of the brain, your dominant function is in a more well developed part of your brain, inferior in a less developed area etc. Each function relies on their "allocated" area of brain cells and neurons but the inferior functions wear out easier (they're not as efficient) because they have a far smaller stockpile of neurons and brain cells than the dominant functions have in theirs.
So many things to ask haha. Maybe I shouldn't bombard you but you're the first one I encounter that seems to really understand! You were saying something about what boosts you or drains you. Is it ok to say that actually everything drains you, but some things are less draining than others because they use better developed and in a sense stronger functions? or am I misunderstanding something?
ow yeah and another question.. is it true that people with strong J are introverted in their second letter and people with P are introverted with their third letter? how does this work? and how did they derived at this? could you maybe send me a good link? would be great!
You were saying that some people have functions that are underdeveloped or almost none existent. Does that mean that they actually can't develop them at all? Can people like an ISFP "create" INTROverted thinking?
I'm trying to find out what my mom's [myers-briggs] type is. I'm pretty sure she's not an N. I also think she's a procrastinator. So yeah. She's also a nurse and is president of a nursing company. So maybe she's a J. I have a feeling that she's an Extroverted Feeler. I'm an INFJ btw.
She's also not good at giving advice and seems to be an extrovert bec. when she's angry she really shows it. BUT she really hears you out. Because she seems inauthentic most of the time, I think she's an SP.
I learn more about this cause it's utterly fascinating. I'm an ISFP so I like to think I understand people more than the average person and Myers Briggs is just the perfect tool to navigate your way through all the people you encounter in life. I'm a really strong introvert and have a fear of interaction but MB gives me confidence and tools I can grasp on to when it comes to interacting with people.
At first it was to get to know myself a tiny bit better.. was brief.. then i was about getting a date.. And i worked as planed. I also try to figure out what direction at work i should go.
I have to train people as part of my job and I use Myers Briggs to get inside their heads and figure out how to best explain things to them. It's a trading floor and most people are either ENTJ or INTJ. There is a big difference between the two but I can't grasp how having the same functions, in a slightly different order, could matter so much. It'd be informative and lucrative if you could explain it. Also, you'd get to talk about yourself!
@Moorzo83 Hey good stuff. I have noticed a big difference with the massive execution style of the ENTJ with their lead Te and the strong "masterminding" of the Ni in the INTJ. I like the idea of doing a video on this, plan/hope to do so.
OMG Thank you sooo much for responding!!!!i was alittle suprised to see my face pop up hahahaha. anyways i was asking because I was pretty sure i was ISFP but my cousin kept telling me she thinks iam ISFJ. Thanks for this great MBTI video. I've studied MBTI for years but never learn the functions. You showed me how important it is to know the functions to really understand the MBTI.
Dave, please purty please compare the above two types: INFP and ENFP. Lotta us ENFPs report that we once thought we were INFPs but then realized that we matched up better with the description(s) for ENFP. I am curious about Fi vs Fe and would appreciate a video specifically comparing the two. As an INTP I surely exhibit Fe, but have experiences that seem rather Fi. I am not sure if these experiences fall in the Fe designation or not and would like some assistance in understanding. Thank you.
@cornyBandit Hey, good question! We have not found enough evidence to prove genetic connection between parents and a child's personality type. Depending on who raises you though, it greatly affects how your psychological type develops.
Is reading music considered a Introverted Thinking and/or Introverted Sensing activity? I used to get annoyed in music class when I was in highschool.
@PhotoExtremist Gosh, it really could go either way depending on the person. Generally yes, reading music is very Ti and Si. It requires taking in and processing external detail data and then converting it to Se (sound).
I have never once met an ISFJ that actually seemed extraverted. INFJ's do a lot however. & ... I thought NF's were more likely to be "bipolar"; all of the ISFJ's I have known were pretty solid (even behind closed doors)... ESFJ is more likely to be bipolar in my opinion. Just adding my 2 cents. ISFJ's, in my experience, have always been pretty quiet and stable ppl.
I really enjoyed this. I have quite a few ISFJ friends. I lurk on message boards and am surprised how many INTJ's can't stand SJ's. I seem to be an exception to this and always wondered why. I'm into MB for myself. I'm curious about myself and why I chose the friends that I do. It helps me understand others and makes them more predictable. Also I love typing everyone and everything. Fictional characters are my fave to type.
@psychicenergy7 Yeah, he certainly helped me enjoy college more but it was ultimately very frustrating. I saw his Fi as too limiting and his very minimal thinking function I found very frustrating. It just doesn't work if I end up feeling like I have to be the logical one. Maybe it'd balance out better in an INTJ-ISFP pairing.
@psychicenergy7 I guess I'm not sure what your asking exactly. I know some ISFJs through friendships and my mother is an ISFJ. I dated an ISFP in early college. I dated the ISFP at the time because I found the whole "live in the moment" philosophy appealing.
Awesome video. I've associated with both ISFJs and ISFPs and there are very big differences. I couldn't help but notice the percentages to the groups though - you had 15% for NFs and 5% for NT. Where did you get those percentages? I guess I'm just surprised to see that NTs are at 5%.
@jenilyn8705 Hey cool. Yeah, the "percentages" are rounded generalizations/averages from all the info we've seen on it. The population of each type also varies GREATLY for where you live. Lots of retired SJs in Florida and lots of weirdo FPs in Portland, etc.
@burningsodium Tried that but we just get a sh#t-storm of people with their 10-second-emotional-opinions that this person is another type cause they feel that way. What is used as a "quick example" turns into a huge stumbling block for all the weaker MB students who are still using their own subjective emotions to navigate through answers. So, more harm than good unfortunately.
Maybe in the future we can get a paid "VIP area" where just the big guys can play and be free to speak more freely.
Also, I watch your videos to learn more about myself and how I relate to others. (ESFP) <--- Although, I'm one of the few that isn't a slut. These are helping me develop my observation and thinking outside of the box (tertiary/reasonably weak function).
@Workitoutyo Oh cool, thanks. Yes, ESFP, same functions as me (INTJ) just opposite order. You have an advantage with your "E" so keep using that in real life with your observations. It will take more time to get this stuff down for you, but your advantage is on the back end when you do. You can relate naturally better with people much more cause of your ExFP. Glad you're here.
Another spot-on video! Lovin' them; keep them coming. I'm also ordering the speed-reading people book you suggested.
I'm sure this is getting monotonous, but I'm really having trouble telling if my friend is an ISTP or ISTJ. Although I'm pretty sure she's an Improvisor (SP), she won't consent to it because of her desire for structure (which I believe is explained by the "S"). If you get the extra time, could you make a video addressing the differences between these types? That would be great!
@Workitoutyo Yeah, I know what you mean. I know a guy who is ISTP who lives and acts ISTJ. Hope to get to this one in the future. For now, keep looking at the temperaments and the functions. A big give away there is gonna be the Ti vs Te style of thinking. (one things more internally, one things more in jumps). As well as the facial expressions. (one is Fe and one is Fi)
I used MBTI to find a good partner to have a relationship with. And that worked, I've found the most awesome INFJ I’ve ever met. (I’m an ENTJ). I teach her to also think rationally and objectively about things in live while she teaches me to get in touch with my F. Best thing I’ve ever experienced in life. We view our selves as a dynamic due who can resolve everything by just talking and exchanging ideas.
@Fajoekit Wow man! That is amazing and so cool! And yes, I agree, ENTJ and INFJ is a super match right there. I'd love to hear more about this and how the dynamics work. My friends and I talk alot about "super matches" like this. Send me a PM with more if you get a chance.
Can you do some comparisons across a different dichotomy? Changing P to J results in two personalities with no functions in common. It would be interesting to see some of the similarities and differences between more closely related types. Something like ISTJ/ESTJ or INFP/INTP
@AllUpOns13 Ok, yes, got ya, for sure. Been learning SO MUCH about the ENTJ/INTJ and worlds of similarities and differences there. Very good topic/question. (Justina, please make a note of this one for future videos.)
I use MB in the main for helping communicate with clients at work. I'm an architect, so have to put across a range of information to many different people and have to quickly tap into the most effective way of doing this. Also use it get a better handle on dealing with friends and family as well as self development.
Great video, looking forward to regular ones in 2012...thanks for taking the time to do these Dave.
@ike01213 Oh hey thanks. Yes, this was mostly a "production test" for us. Testing time, tone, visuals, editing, etc. Thanks for the feedback, give more when you got it.
I'm into MB because it helps me in everything with myself and others.
Where do you get your MB knowledge from? Have you read Jung's work directly, or Jung plus others like Tieger?
I just started reading Jung's Red Book. I read one sentence and then think about it for a long time before I can read another sentence (I'm an INTJ, lead Ni). So it's gonna take me a lot of library trips.
Great video once again! However, I'm wondering why people constantly want to compare Ps and Js, when the real similarities lie with the types that share the same dominant function. I come out as INTP in tests and relate to it best, however sometimes I just find myself also relating to ISTP because of the Ti dominance. It would be awesome to have comparisons between types that share the same dominance.
@Hoobes1 Hey that is a very good topic/question, comparing two types with the same dominant function. I'll run it by the team and see if we can do this next or soon.

er2015af 3 months ago
@er2015af Yeah... I couldn't fit my ENFP-ness into either of them...

@JLynnJohnston Oh geez. I don't know this guy. I deny him trice.

@er2015af Hey Davis! 3 ISFJs??? Man, you be a slow learner! Go for 4 just to be sure.
DaveSuperPowers 3 months ago
@DaveSuperPowers haha that was all before I got into MB. No more lol
er2015af 3 months ago
@er2015af No, no, just one more! Just to make sure! ;) And then an ESFJ.

@ike01213 Oh hey thanks. Yes, this was mostly a "production test" for us. Testing time, tone, visuals, editing, etc. Thanks for the feedback, give more when you got it.

I have totally been waiting for this, you're a total boss.

How can I learn this stuff on the level that you have?
FairviewRCflier 3 months ago
@FairviewRCflier We'll be doing more in the coming months showing how to get real good at this stuff. Targeted towards real life application.

Great to see a new video by you, Dave.
Thanks...Lance
lwarley 3 months ago
@lwarley Cool, thanks Lance. Yes, Jung is where its at. I read as well as years of street/business knowledge/experience using this stuff.

I am always wondering what makes people tick. Why people do the things they do, act the way they act, and just differ from others.
FairviewRCflier 3 months ago
@FairviewRCflier Ok, cool, thanks, me too.

Hoobes1 3 months ago 7
@Hoobes1 Hey that is a very good topic/question, comparing two types with the same dominant function. I'll run it by the team and see if we can do this next or soon.
