Great video! I've been playing for only 3 months (former tennis player here), and I notice that to get really good shots, you need to bend the knees. I find that when I don't, my shots are sloppy. This guy clearly demonstrates the bended knees.
@chefwannabe1 Yes - you want to bend your knees and make contact about shin-level. As you get better and have good sweet spot contact, you will be able to make contact a little lower, which will result in more kills. Good luck and I hope you continue to enjoy the great game of racquetball.
I would also suggest developing players spend a lot of time practicing the crosscourt and wide-angle crosscourt shots off both the forehand and backhand sides. It may not be as flashy, but a strong crosscourt pass shot is essential.
A good drill for practicing is simply to hit a forehand crosscourt and run to hit a backhand crosscourt before your shot hits the back wall. After you hit the backhand crosscourt, run to hit a forehand. Repeat this, being sure to focus on hitting precise shots.
It's good to see video demonstrating the most important shots. Nice job dfwboxrb.
It is worth mentioning to viewers that when you are practicing a specific shot, you should focus on hitting that shot correctly. So when practicing straight-in kill shots, you want to ensure the ball does not bounce off the sidewall. Come game time, you want to be confident you can hit each shot precisely.
As a small note, I think traditional splat shots hit the sidewall sooner than yours did in the video.
Finally, a video that's informative and without a bunch of idiots hitting each other on the court. I like how you went through shot by shot and gave little captions, nice job
@racquetballfreak18 I appreciate your comment. This is just something I practice. It's not the "end all", but I think it can be helpful for players of all levels.
Wow ! I have learned so much by watching you, at least once a week.
Incredible, I just started about a year ago and I found it so much fun the RB that I want to play every day !. I used to played tennis but I quit because a tennis elbow, but now with RB no problem ! Yeah ! BTW I enjoy the music in this video, what is the song? I would like to have it for my practice... Thanks I see you soon with more drills.
@samy4music Hey there - sorry I have been out of touch for a while and have not had time to put up more videos. That music was just some generic song I found. I would gladly send it to you but I can't find it! Sorry!
Wow flawless mechanics man!!! The first so called "instructunal" video on you tube where the person looks like an instructor. You're an open player I assu
all these drills help,..but there is nothing better than playing tournaments to improve your game,..the adrenaline you get from playing makes your timing and focus strong,..u get whatya pay for.
I find it pretty easy to hit kill shots over and over when the ball is stationary, just in front of me. During play I seem to have a lot harder time hitting right in the corner, pretty much have a lot more lack of control. any advice?
Thank you for the video--it's very helpful. Do you have suggestions for drills for getting used to contacting the ball low to the ground? Also for being in proper court position early? I find that during my drills I do reasonably well, but during games I contact the ball too high, and am always hitting the ball on the move. Thanks!
I just want to say I really appreciate this clip. My wife and everyone else beats me at raquetball so I have started practicing alone almost every day. This clip is just so good at showing basic shots I need to make and what they look like. I like to review it before I go practice.
If you watch the top players, they really use the angles and utilize the corner shots well. It's so easy to get into a rut where you hit pass shot after pass (V-pass) and your shots become predictable. So throw in a cross court pinch (side, then front wall) shot on occasion to keep them honest. This will force them to move up, at which time you can smash a nice V-pass past them.
And use a nice medium lob serve. Force them to hit a good ceiling shot, then when they miss, kill it.
Thank you for the advice. I will do that. I am practicing the pinch a lot as it is a shot I miss frequently though it is getting better with practice.
Try to work on various speeds of the pinch shot. You don't have to blast it every time. A nice off-speed is as effective as a Randy Johnson change up! Use it if you think your opponent is anticipating a hard shot and they are back on their heels.
Is there a reason why you twist your arm for a backhand? (Pause at exactly 0:16). I'm only comparing your backhand to maybe a jason mannino. My backhand is more like swinging a baseball bat, any suggestions or tips?
this may seem true... however all this really dose is cause inconsistency, if you think about it... its just extra motion... look at how low he hits the ball... a bit harder if any wont make a huge diff. the placement and shot selection is what will. :)
@dfwgearboxrb this may seem true... however all this really dose is cause inconsistency, if you think about it... its just extra motion... look at how low he hits the ball... a bit harder if any wont make a huge diff. the placement and shot selection is what will. :) just my opinion, and my coach also
Nice form on the backhand splats. One of my favorite shots too. I also like to put on the ear buds and tune into the MP3. I get lost in the rythem of the music and the time flies as I get a good workout.. Again, nice video. I posted it on our high school racquetball teams FB site so the kids can use it as a tool to practice with. Keep up the good work and keep rolling it out!
I find that when I listen to some upbeat music that I really like, I turn into a rollout machine. I wish I could wear head phones and listen to tunes while in a tournament. I wonder if that's against the rules. It's kind of like starring in your own music video. I like to practice listening to U2... favorite songs for practicing are 1) Elevation 2) City of Blinding Lights 3) Walk On
You should try with these tunes... you won't miss!
I checked out your workout tunes....sounds like you're a U2 fan. Good choices! My 3 favorites are 1) Lunatic Fringe / Red Rider, 2) Only the Young / Journey, 3) Good Times, Bad Times / Led Zeppelin. Like you, I try to keep all the tunes a bit upbeat. Times flies by and I try to move with the flow of the music. I spend a lot of time hitting shots this way. Not quite a rollout machine, but I do make a higher percentage of shots by practicing, more than I used to when I was a begfinning player.
@dfwgearboxrb I actually played in a tournament this past December, and I ended up playing a guy who had his headphones on in the court during our match. He ended up winning, so wonder if it did help! And also wonder if it is legal or not
How long have you been playing the game, my friend? Racquetball is such an awesome workout. I love it because even if there is nobody to play, I can practice by hitting alone. Unlike tennis, where you need to hit with another person to simulate the correct spin of the ball, the ball comes off the front wall in racquetball just like it would if someone else had hit it, so hitting alone is a great way to polish your game. Keep it up and keep rolling.
You responded to me before, but I've got a question. First off, let me give you some perspective. I have a highly ectomorphic body type. And I've been playing racquetball for about 6-months. I'm about a low-mid level C-player. I play against a right-handed high-B to low-A player's left hand weekly. I have been getting delayed-onset muscle soreness a lot in my shoulder/rotator cuff muscles and brachialis muscle.
Ok, so there is the perspective. I'm wondering....*continued below*
What I'm wondering is when you started out, and I'm not sure what body type you have (if you're an ectomorph, like myself), did you have the same soreness?
The person who I've been playing racquetball (high-B to low-A) says he never recalls having any such soreness for such a long period of time. I usually give myself a week for rest. I have not told my general physician, basically, because they probably would just recommend me to a specialist. I was wondering if you had the soreness I described in the same locations.
Well, I looked up the word "ectomorphic" and found that it means frail or skinny. I would guess that you perhaps your swing mechanics are causing the soreness, or perhaps you are just trying to hit the ball too hard. Try hitting the ball a little softer and working on just being smooth in your swing. There are some very good players who are quite skinny.
yeah, I'm good with euphemisms! That's exactly what I was thinking though. My swing is still a bit awkward, which helps explain my inconsistency. I was just wondering if you had the same 'soreness' or if it was just me. I've asked a few players and they weren't sure what I was talking about. It might have been to long ago to think about for them. Thanks for the response.
Thanks for the compliment! I had fun making this and plan to make some more but have been so busy I haven't had time. Look for some more in the future.
Awesome vid! I've only been playing just a few months, and this weekend I tried something different. Instead of challenging some of the guys at the gym, I just threw on my ipod and practiced hitting random shots and serves ALL weekend..I was anticipating playing today to see if I could see a difference. Had tons of rhythm, and I felt really comfortable. Played 2 cut-throats, and 4 singles games (against 4 diff. guys); won all 6! The vid has me motivated to do a ton of more reps! Thks! INSPIRED!
Hey Inspired! Thanks for posting a message. That's awesome. You know, I find that when I put on my headphones and hit while listening to tunes on my MP3 player I hit that much better. Too bad I can't listen to music while playing in actual matches!
lol, interesting music - kinda gay. You're so freakin' awesome though. I've only been playing about 6-months. I play against an A-player. I'm probably low B-level. Practice practice practice makes perfect.
Hey Fernandez218... thanks for visiting! Racquetball is such a great game - keep playing and you will get better. Try to work on the basics... getting your feet set and in position before hitting - your feet being in the right position in relation to the ball is like having your power drill plugged in. If your feet are moving too much or you are making contact too far in front or pulling from behind, you sacrifice power and control.
Yeah, I have pretty good footwork, BUT I'm an ectomorph. Basically, I'm very skinny so what I have to work on is my power. I play weekly so that I give myself enough chance for my brachialis (the one that gets the most soreness) and other muscles to heal. Also being consistent with shots is such a huge part of becoming a good player.
There are quite a few components that contribute to power and control and you are right. Thanks for the good stuff!
Hi asmcriminal. I think the most important things to learn first are: 1) the correct use of the wrist in your swing - a big take back like in tennis is not necessary - good snap of the wrist is key, 2) ligning up your shoulders with the side walls when hitting - you should always try to have your shoulders parallel to the side walls, 3) finding the right contact point should be knee to shin height when shooting kill shot, 4) get fee set before swinging - gotta learn the bounce of the ball.
@asmcriminaL Sorry for the HUGE delay in responding. Hopefully you are still playing now! First and foremost, learn a proper grip. Don't hold the racquet like a microphone, rather let it lay in your hand, and do so so that the frame of the racquet lines up with your arm. You don't want to overcompensate for either the backhand or forehand. Next, stand in the front court at the front of the service box, drop the ball and make contact about shin-level height and work on kills shots.
yes, it has to hit over the 2nd line when you serve. Probably the most important thing to learn how to do first is proper swing execution for both forehand and backhand.
Once the ball is returned after the serve, the lines on the floor don't mean anything anymore. You simply have to return the ball to the front wall before it bounces twice. Hi Housebird, thanks for checking out the video. I am planning to add some more. How long have you been playing? Keep working at it. It's important to have your feet planted, knees bent slightly and to not use too much of your arm like with a tennis swing. It's mostly wrist in racquetball.

I was also wondering, after you serve and the rally has started, does the ball have to hit over the 2nd line? (as you have to in the serve)
