MAN those sound fantastic. I had owned DW Collector's at one point and ended up selling them, after comparing them to Ludwig Classic Maple. These sound fatter and louder than Collector's, when comparing them to your other videos. Are they as fat and resonant in person? Do they project and sustain beyond what the Collector's series is capable of, in your opinion?
@NerfLad Yeah, not exactly the same proportions of maple-to-gum wood as Jasper shells, but it definitely has that Round Badge sound. More so than actual modern Gretsch kits.
@asdf072xxp You know, it's funny, you're not the only person I've heard say something along the lines of "DW Jazz drums are more Gretsch than Gretsch!" Haha, I think they sound great.
I have this same kit at my church in marine pearl, but its a few years old so i don't know if it's still in the same color or not. I prefer them for church music or older rock, id get a gretch for jazz
I have found that DW drums tend to sound choked at higher tunings. They are, of course, famous for sounding low and deep, though. For jazz drums, I really like Ludwig, Sonor, and especially Pearl, believe it or not. Pearls sing at a medium-high tuning-the masters series does, anyway. Just my 0.02
hey, i'm dying to get a dw jazz series drum kit. My main worry is that i actually play R&B, Blues and soul. I know they are basically the same musical root but i'd like to know if this is the right drum kit for me. Thanks!
Hello! My name is Paul, i live in Brazil. I have a DW Champagne Glass Collectos. May set is 8", 10", 12" and 14". I wan tot buy floor tom 16". You have for sale? May achieve? My DW no jazz, is collectors. Thanks!
I just realized that I've seen most of your videos......it's nice to actually hear a kit before you buy it, especially one that is tuned properly! I've never walked in to a music store and heard a kit tuned properly.....that's 90 percent of the battle!!! Anyway very nice job!
Thomas Prigden used a dw Jazz series to tour with The Mars Volta just before he left, i also disagree with calling this guy Travis Barker, i mean travis barker does a rock beat for a drum solo, this guy did something good =p
A big reason why this kit sounds more alive than the standard collectors is probably because of the ambassador coated heads. The standard DW heads that I've heard sounds pretty dead. DW should put Ambassadors or Evans G1 on every kit, then it will sounds a lot better in the music stores also.
Wow, they sound so much better than the standard DW Collectors to my ears, they are more lively and present. I guess those would deliver even better if you crank the heads higher since they are specifically designed to accomodate jazz tunings.
I'm pretty sure they're the stock dw heads... I think they are coated single ply ambassadors... The info is on DW's homepage if you want to be sure...

Could tighten those thing a little, but they're gorgeous. haha. And nice performance! Was that some rudiment at the end there around the kit?
dylandouglas91 8 months ago
Probably tuned a little low for jazz

Finally, someone is remaking a Jasper shell! I always wondered why no drum companies tried to do this.
asdf072xxp 10 months ago
@asdf072xxp I think DW Jazz Series drums are a six-ply Maple/Gum/Maple shell.

just because its jazz doesnt mean you cant play loud
everything he plays is musical and jazzy
there arent many songs with 2-minute shout choruses but hes not playing with someone else

and these drums can be used for more than jazz.

Agreed, much more tonal character than the everyday collector's series, which I don't much care for. These sound real nice.

anyone know what kind of heads they are? they look like evans coated ones, but not sure of the make..

oh okay thanks, they don't sound too bad at all, normally stock heads aren't that great.
nightshot999 2 years ago
Those aren't the stock ones, the DW stock heads are mostly clear with a ring of coating near the outside, they look SWEET. =)
BrainDamage769 2 years ago
That's on all other DW drum series, the jazz series comes with DW remo coated ambassadors
epasurr 2 years ago
Ohh, my mistake! Ahh, sounds fantastic either way. =)
