  • @stickyr34 Thats actually wastegate flutter. They used an external wastegate on the P2 (versus the stock internal wastegate you find on the WRX/STi)

  • The "squirrel noise" is a super sequential blow off valve, instead of dumping the boost pressure all at once it lets it out in stages.. I just got one for my A4:)

  • @andrew54930 No its not, it doesnt have a BOV atall, if fact most rally cars dont atall. the noise is the air flowing back through the turbo the wrong way, chopping the air is it flows through the vanes. Some ppl cal it waste gate chatter but not technically correct name. plus BOV are not good for cars, the ecu has measured air flow from MAF or MAP then adjust fuel accordingly, then you atmosphere the boost leaving running rich. Have to build lost boost again. Recirc valve are best, no lost air.

    Its basically changing the ignition timing to ignite while the exhaust valve is open, so fireballs shoot down to the turbo and make it spin (hence the flames). This is of course only during non WOT situations :]

    The reason its not used on road cars is cause it SHOOTS FIREBALLS DOWN TO THE TURBO making them not too reliable lol

  • @pocketfiend36 also fireballs are the turbos least worry, the turbo is hot enough as it is, i think the reason why its not used in public cars is cause of the noise. especialy on gear change, some engines do a bang as loud as a gun fire, also at idle most crackle and bang, nabours wont be to happy about that ;)

    Watch some home made turbo jet videos and you'll see what I mean, its a very similar effect.

    in between shifts @WOT- it all depends on if you have cats or not and if the tune is slightly rich, when unburnt fuel in the exhaust releases at the end, the fuel now that its exposed to enough O2, it will ignite.

    causing a flash and a pop.

  • Many modern (and some not so modern) production cars have turbos... straight from factory. many of which have blow off valves (aka: wastegates) and they DO infact pass air quality inspections. A wastegate simply regulates pressure to keep your turbo from building unlimited pressure and blowing itself up. I say this because my car is turbocharged, it does have a BOV and I do live in an area where air quality tests are manditory once per year and I've been passing since 2007

  • A wastegate only sounds like that when it exhausts to the atmosphere, most turbocharged cars have the wastegate dumping into the exhaust after the turbo. A similar sound can be heard in Audi Group B rally cars, Audi Trans-am cars, Audi 90GTO, and several other extreme race vehicles, however; an atmosphere wastegate dump will absolutely never pass the emissions tests in virtually any country in the world due to the fact that the exhaust passing through the wastegate is never going through a cat.

  • @Jonz6661 It's not. Wastegate is used to control the amount of boost by letting some exhaust gas go around the the turbine wheel without spinning it. Dump valve is located between the compressor wheel and throttle flap and is utilised when throttle flap closes, dumping excess pressure out in the air or recirculating it back to the intake system before the compressor wheel. This reduces pressure shocks the turbo would otherwise suffer, and it also reduces lag since turbo spins more freely.

  • and imagine the turbo chattering it's first 3 waves over the wastegates actuator spring stifness, and the wastegate opening and closeing at the same time as the chatters....and the reason it dose multiple waves over the 'full boost' limit is again the natilag's job

  • @@dedasdude the dump valve(blow off) canot open in sequence....it's opened by the vacum, that sound is indeed the wastegate,imagine the wastegate is openeded and full throttle at '1bar', when he lifts the first wave of the turbo chatter bounces to '1.5' bar, and thats because the dump valve is not open, because he has antilag, wich needs to bypass air into the manifold when the throttle is closed (it's done by a throttle kicker or through the idle valve)

  • For all you constantly guessing why the car is fluttering after the accelerator is released, it has in about the same technology as the Subaru WRCars. Do some reading and find out why they flutter when driver releases the gas and you can find out why this flutters...WRC cars don't carry dumpvalves

  • @Bischlarbo69 my neighbor has a mid 80s peugot and it has "Bi Turbo", what ever that is, and it makes the exact same sound when he hammers it, but that's when it is running. Beautiful looking car though as it sits in the driveway

Because if you did, you'd get that it's entirely possible for them to not care since it's a prototype. In fact, they already run the anti-lag system which is the single worst mod for a car, causing unused gas to be ignited which cuts engine life by up to 50%, which can also contribute to compression surge. Do some fuckin research you hobo.

  • @claireclark69 This car is a baby car compared to the GTR. this car did a lap time of 1:24.3 the GTR did 1:19.7 around that same track. Thats a big difference in distance if that where a race.

  • @kthebay Its easy once u get a turbocharged engine. Just make sure u have a high pressure turbo, then install a dumpvalve with a wistle, and that sound is the outcome.

  • @dedasdude The squirrely noise is the dumpvalve for the turbocharger. The dumpvalve makes sure the excess air that gets trapped between the engine and the turbo when you step off the accelerator doesen't go back into the turbo, causing it to slow down its turbine, and damaging the blades. Also helps for the anti-lag, since that's job is to keep the turbo spinning as fast as possible for as long as possible. It can make the turbo hot, but it shouldn't make any harm. If that made you any wiser :)

Here is some examples: watch?v=HblCEQXQ8Q4 and watch?v=hye-XKFhKeo That flapping noise from the supra is because the airpressure goes back in the turbo when charging. I've had a few turbocars and have experimented whit this.
