@wlh1923 That's why I love it! It's a film NOIR Western, that was the aesthetic they used, as I'm sure you know. It makes the whole scene so much more menacing.
Mitchum was quite a brawler anyway, the Deborah Kerr story about him alone proves that: my guess is that Preston was as well. They were just having a good time.
I read that both Preston & Mitchum were battered and bruised after that scene as they didn't use doubles. Evidently they were good friends in real life until Preston's death.
Terrific movie, watched it last night on DVD and Mitchum was great as usual.
