  • Now this is a good approach on this ear-entertaining piece. Surely one of my favorite interpretations so far, apart, probably, from myself. Not more to complain, or compliment. Just... Great.

    Peace out.

  • What a wonderful performance, it makes me travel in time!

  • You are such a beautiful player, would love to see you perform live :)

  • It is not the most beautiful piece of Rameau in my opinion and although I wish I 'd have the technique of this lady, I strongly prefer the interpretation of Trevor Pinnock. His rhythms are flowing in a very natural manner, it 'swings' almost jazzylike, but still very distinct and classical. Here I hear a more conservative approach. Its all a matter of taste. I like the Cembalo, both its sound and its appearance.

  • this music makes me feel quite british, hmm yes...

  • @razorthecurse But it's French.

  • @TheZombieJC it makes me feel like that... just the pleasant sound of the harpsichord... its nice and fancy...

  • Wonderful, expressive playing! And she does it standing up, which I've never seen before.

  • こういう音もかえって味が出てますね!!

  • I love her playing so much when she's at her best.

  • JE L'AIME!

  • Merci de nous démontrer encore une fois que claveciniste c'est pas un passe-temps pour pianistes, et que c'est très utile de lire des traités.

  • " Elegant obscuria harpsichordia, The Deusian Autonomy: Architecture Of The Gods, Music Of The Heavens, & A Superior State Of Mind. "

  • Also, a very nice sounding instrument! (Not that I have any great experience in judging the sound of harpsichords, hehe.)

  • I suppose I may as well put my 5 cents in. In regard to changing the rhythms (I'm actually not familiar with the piece), I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been much frowned upon even in its time - the Baroque having both come out of, and been part of, a great improvisatory tradition. But certainly, I think the elegance of the playing surely agrees with the aesthetic tastes of the time. I think it's a wonderful performance. Very beautiful. :) Thank you.

  • @jonorulz

Thanks for your post. In the Baroque times ornaments were often added and removed according to how the player wanted it to be performed. If Bach had to sometimes transpose a piece he had written up or down a significant interval to match the pitches of other instruments, I doubt they would have been strict on the rhythms either.

  • A true Baroque spirit! Unique and good articulated. You have the souls of the Baroque's enlightment in both your mind and heart.

  • Elaine, I love you're style of playing. I love your attention to detail and ornamentation. YOU are a true professional. Bravo!!

  • QUITE delightful!!! Love the "swing" she puts into the phrasing. Who cares if it's "authentic" or 100% true to the way the composer originally conceived it - music is a living, vital thing and a 21st century interpretation of a particular piece can, and perhaps SHOULD be different from a 17th century interpretation. The atrocities and abominations which have been (and still are!!) perpetrated in the name of "authenticity" in music, make me shudder just to consider them.

  • Everyone needs to shut up with the negative comments. You're listening to a recording of Rameau for FREE and you're bitching? Just appreciate that it's online to watch/listen to, and if you don't like it, click another damn link.

  • @ker246 I agree and usually the ones complaining are those that can't even play twinkle little star with one hand.

  • Does anyone, anywhere still make acoustic harpsichords?

  • @Alexandrep49

On veut bien entendre votre interprétation.

  • Comment removed

  • @joimko2

Sorry some of my friend may have used my account. I never write dirty words. I remove it immediately. I feel sorry to have disturbed you.

  • @Alexandrep49 No worries and many thanks. I removed my answer as well.

  • Some of you people are so mean with your silly comments. Both the composer and the performer are brilliant. Enough said PLEASE!

  • I agree with you, if people don't have something good why don't they just shut the hell up? Like someone wants to hear their endless bullshit about wrong phrasing, ugliness and another performer that's better. I so sick of it, internet, forums and especially youtube is filled with these internetcritics who claim to be experts. Man mankinds ego is so big, how will we ever get peace with so many idiots here? Only time will tell if god will just whipe us all out because of our ignorance.

  • @nyerndc , people like them can only be silly.....that's all they can do. They can all kiss Rameau's ass......a master of music, and the performer is admirable

  • @nyerndc , why , did some idiot say that the composer is not brilliant? lol.....must be someone who talks out of his arse, as Rameau was a legendary composer and a great music theorist. It's like a plumber saying that Da Vinci wasn't so good. So idiotic that makes you laugh.

The performer is great too, but the composer is in a league of his own

  • Trovo che l'inegalité, in questo pezzo, sia inappropriata e anzi tolga espressività al pezzo.

  • 1:57 you mean you are so right man

    genius !

  • 1:47 sound like a fourth degree of a major scale but here she plays a B natural before her B flat ,does not sound like the most appropritate phrasing.

    But that,s only me

    Still 5****** Bravo !

  • I'm not sure if you read well, or even read extensively toycityworld.

Yeah, she is a bit ugly, but her talent makes up for that.

    Get over it you jerk.

  • Once again, totally unncessecary and inappropriate inégale playing....

  • dude what are you talking about you could not even play for 10 seconds as good as she plays, your not worth one thousand of her playing and music ability.

  • Just read the sources... why do people like you always get emotional when apparently one of your heroines is being criticised? I don't see what my playing capacities (of which you seem to know a lot) have to do with it. A word of advice: next time, try to use arguments.... ok? If you know what they are, of course.

  • Agreed. Completely out of place in this piece!

  • does inégale refer to the way she "swings" the rhythm?

  • @Mistermagoo77

    Yes.

  • @ocktube How is that inappropriate? She is playing French music

  • @zyxonian

Ah... I see... it's French, so she should play inégale. The Dutch are Dutch, so they wear clogs. Americans are American so they all eat at McDonald's. Good reasoning!

  • @ocktube Performance practice is always a subjective topic with no one right answer, save for one that brings out appropriate musicality. I think this performance is a good interpretation. If she was playing inégale with Monteverdi, then I would agree with unnecessary and inappropriateness. But since this is a mid to late French baroque piece, I would say it isn't out of the question and "inappropriate".

  • Great sound! Great music! Great playing!

Thank you for allowing me to recall the there was once a civilization here.

  • I think it is beautiful, the harpsichord, most harpsichords of intricate design are, to me.

I suppose she is all right. Nice hands and cheekbones, and that's it.

  • Its' pretty normal for a harpsichord, only the tall legs are unusual.

  • This is more than lovely, her playing is exquisite!

And the harpsichord is just a wonder to look at.

  • Ms. Comparone is also a wonder to look at ;)

  • thats a very strange (but beutiful) harpsichord it has a body like a grand piano and two sets of keys like some organs

  • This instrument has an unusually rich tone - helped by a excellent recording of an outstanding harpsichordist.

when you write: two sets of keys, I presume you mean a double manual?

That's common on many of the bigger instruments and was common throughout Europe during the 16th to 18th centuries.

  • Beautiful full and rich touch! Love those notes inegales too!

  • mmmmm is. delisciuss

  • Bravo ! ça tourbillonne bien ...

  • The playing is wonderful but so also is the video work.

  • I like it!

  • Vivid, natural and comunicative style. Very good.

  • Very very nice!

  • Magnificent!!!! You are my favourite harpsichordist. Could you PLEASE record the complete Scarlatti sonatas like Scott Ross did?!

  • What a big solicitation! D Scarlatti composed more than 500 sonates. It is a work for an entire life.

  • Yes, I suppose it is rather a lot to ask!! I recently acquired the Warner box set of Scott Ross recordings which extends to 34 CDS. While Ross was a great harpsichordist (the box set is treasure trove), I find Elaine Comparone's playing to be more dramatic and expressive. If you like Scarlatti, I recommend her CD, The Cat's Fugue.

  • :o)

I really like her playing too. The video with her playing the K. 517 is amazing. I sent it to a lot of friends in you tube. And I have it in my i pod. I don't have many videos in my Ipod , but that one was chosen to me, for watching sometimes around. And obviously, I am subscriber of E Comparone's channel. Thanks for the tips, the Scott Ross's recordings and the Cat's Fugue's CD. I am D Scarlatti's music big fan.
