  • Nice tutorial, very clear and articulate, I understand you better than my teacher haha. Infact, it was nice of you to show the filesystems in form of folders rather than drawing it like most of them do. It was nice. Can you please give more examples on /lib ? and yes , why dont you dedicate full videos on each and every directories, it would be better- not that u were bad in this one hehe..applause man

  • Thank you for this tutorial. It's really taking the edge off learning Linux

  • I was watching high level filesystem videos and took the time to watch this.Even though I have a very high understanding of Linux, I took the time to watch this video out of appreciation. Very good job.

  • Watching this in CrunchBang Linux!

  • It's been many months since I installed Linux as my only OS for my desktop; so this was a good day for me to look at a good Linux Operating System structure video, reinforce what I had learned and see if there was anything that I had missed.

  • You are using WINDOWS movie maker!

  • @SayaYunani Yep that is correct, because when this video was made 4.5 years ago video editing on Linux was virtually impossible. Now I would use OpenShot Video Editor

  • @BinarySignal Yes, agrre openshot is better.

  • This Is A Great Tutorial.

  • great tutorial!

  • Also, try GoboLinux. It follows that idea.

  • The FHS is a pretty good idea, but I think it makes it way too hard to install / remove programs. I don't like having to have an entire package manager program just to shuffle files around.

The filesystem should be easier to use than this.

  • Well, 'easy to use' is a bad excuse for everything. Simple is good, sure, but that doesn't necessarily mean easy to use, just easy to learn, and easy to use once you learn.

And, a package manager is necessary for more than the files - it handles stuff like dependencies (usually), packages that need each other to function.

But you're right that there should be an alternate system for managing programs. My idea is another folder for each package, with links to all that package's files.

  • nicely done,

I agree - the fact that in Linux a directory (mount-point) could be a SAN drive or just another directory on the local drive

vs Windows, where the entire file system has to be on a single device

    makes Linux so superior

  • clean

  • Very nicely done.

It seemed almost like I was "reading" this tutorial as a book.

You have a really good "reading" voice.

  • I wonder if you would talk like that face to face, or are you bravely hiding behind anonymity.

  • I can answer that one for you, easily. I would tell you the same thing face to face and I have told many people the same thing face to face regarding my opinions on what linux is becomming. As far as anonymity is concerned: My name is Shane Scott I live at 2 Oak Street, Cape Town, South Africa. By the way 'bravely hiding' is an oxymoron.

  • mmmmmm. Not realy the correct forum, but here goes! I still do not believe you go about talking to people you meet like you "talk" here. Calling people "retards" and "braindead" face to face is not a smart thing to do. Clearly you are very well educated, best use that education for the good hey! ;)

  • Ok, ok I'm sorry. I take it all back, I'm just a bit too passionate about my views sometimes.

  • I'm not teaching you Linux.

Good luck paying for Windows again and again.

  • that, my friend, is ubuntu linux running rox file manager

  • well it looks like crap, infact ubuntu is crap, go debian.

  • Hear hear,Ii love debian. However, if you look in the bottom corner of the window, there is only 2 gigs remaining on his hard drive, so its probably not very big. You could assume that this means he has a low end computer and needs a lightweight window manager like rox.

  • Oh i forgot, he could also be running it in a virtual pc

  • Or maybe he is not lending too much space, just the minimum 4 GB.

  • Its great how the shared Libraries concept it back in another OS people can use just as it was back in the Amiga days which is another system that was based on Unix :) Nice video.

  • Absolutely perfect.

Please keep up the good work!

  • thank you for this.
