Wow....I was around 9 or 10 years old, called the local AM radio station and requested this song, the DJ asked me if wanted to dedicate the song to anyone and I happened to be staying with my brother and his new wife for a few weeks during the summer. I told the DJ to please dedicate it to my brother Sam from his little sis Lynn...he passed away a few years ago, but this song brought back a wonderful memory.....powerful stuff
@LynnieLousMusic Your comment brought me to tears as this song took me back to the summer of 1970 and my big brotrher was back from Vietnam. I lost him in 1992 so I can relate. Some songs just hit the heart really deep with memories of all the people we loved. I miss those days so much.
@searcher555 Thank you for your kind comment. I had 3 older brothers and 4 younger. I guess I was the middle one. We had great parents and great memories.
This song represents what I consider the "golden age" of "Middle of the Road" music, which lasted from roughly 1966 to 1975 - when Engelbert Humperdinck, Carpenters, Bread, early Olivia Newton-John, Helen Reddy, and the like were all big with adults and teens. Great music.
Most Americans probably don't remember, but one of the massive UK hits from the group's late '70s incarnation did cross over to the charts here... "Save Your Kisses For Me." It was a #1 Adult Contemporary hit in 1976.
Donrholloway yes it is a powerful song I live in Melbourne it's warmer here than tassie italk to the states every day on ham radio any way enjoy the music god bless

I learned of this song while reading about the Upstairs Lounge Fire in New Orleans in 1973. It's a great song but the story of how it is linked to the people killed in the fire is just heart breaking.
Awesome song from I believe 1970 or 1971!! When I hear this song 911 does not to come to mind at all!! What does is the Vietnam War and the 58,000 plus Americans who died there including my brother :-( Those that survived and came home we treated like dirt{I am being nice here.} So if you want to make this song about politics, that is what I remember to this day!!
I Will always hink of 911 and how wonderful that the whole country came together as one. I still live in Manhattan, it is a kinder, gentler city. Sad that it took a tragedy, but the support from the USA was amazing. I was there that day. WE WILL NEVER FORGET!
@Jeannenyc57 I don't think that this was intended to be a song about patriotism or terrorism, but rather about humanity as a whole standing together. As for me, I would like to be able to forget days like September 11 and hope that humanity can evolve beyond warfare and the sort of tribal unity against a common enemy of which you seem so proud. As for New York being kinder and gentler... well, that is where Wall Street is, right?
@TaraClan I'd like to forget that day also, I lost a brother. The song, I remember when it came out.
I guess each of us get's different meaning to songs, but I love it anyway, and YES Wall street is in NY, So is Statue of Liberty, Empire State and so much more. Have a good day.

Why do people have to fuck things up and bring politics into everything. For once can we just listen to great music without someone bringing politics into it.
Don't think this song was really written with any political agenda behind its creation, I do think its a love song - early 1970's was chronic, government could only afford to switch on the grid to give us light and telly three days a week, so to me its a love song about living through harsh times - people today don't know how lucky they are... It's interesting that this was really two different groups. The first ensemble is in the picture at 1:47. This is who you hear in this recording. Tony Burrows, the male lead, at the top of the pic, was a session singer who also sang with Edison Lighthouse, White Plains, Pipkins, and First Class.

What a memory. Around that time almost all of the 6th grade girls at my school were still wearing their Vietnam soldier ID bracelets we had bought and they remained unclaimed because those names on our bracelets never returned home. Only about 2 or 3 got to give their bracelet to the soldier when they returned, and the rest of us were crying. We'll never forget you - MIA and POW.
The first four bars still comprise the most quintessentially American music I've ever heard. And everything that follows...god, what an indelible anthem.

@2009Denisem WOW!! I cannot remember this song by Brotherhood of Man, but what a stunning song it is.....I am stunned, never knew they had this one...great post julieoliverio and thank you Denise for a super share.
One of the best, if not THE best, songs of the 70's. Things were so good in the early 70's - a totally different culture and mood from the late 70's, which in my opinion was awful. Amazing how good the music was from 1970 -1975. Oh yeah - the Dawn of Disco and the end of good music!
@marcmgm There were two completely different versions of (The) Brotherhood of Man. The original line up (which altered a little in its 3 or so years) are featured here. Tony Burrows and Sunny Leslie take the solo's. The second line up were far more successful winning the Eurovision Song Contest and having number 1 and top ten hits in the UK (and probably elsewhere). However, their less soulful more full-on pop sound is usually considered to be inferior to the originals material.
Unfortunately greedy ceos and the exposure of some corrupt union heads have done a good job of demonizing the union movement in the eyes of too many americans, and blaming our economic mess on them. Sorry people, but I think it's more than coincedence that the decline of the labor movement coincides with the decline of the middle class. Exporting jobs to countries like China, with no human rights or worker protection, all in the name of cheap goods and big profits, makes no sense.
The reality is that two tier wage scales and the increasing economic and political power of southern states are probably going to destroy organized labor in this country.
Kasich and the Republicans have total control in Ohio now and they're expected to try for Right To Work there. It'll be a war but there's significant support for it because of the economy. There's more support now than when they last tried it in 1958.
This is one of the most Beautiful songs I have EVER heard. I love it so very much.. it makes me cry. I remember being 12 & hearing this song & being so deeply moved. I miss my friends, the fun & the innocence of that time. Every once in a while I remember this song & sing it. I still feel deeply moved. I find the lyrics to have very deep meaning. I can't say enough about this song and how grateful I am to find this. @julieoliverio Thank you so much for posting this. I Love it! *)*
I heard this old song when I was in Walgreens. I had totally forgotten about this little gem. I found myself singing the song in the store while shopping,, and even though some people looked at me like I was nuts, I didn't care, because there were smiles too, from the old school shoppers. A good song that brings back good memories from my childhood.
Good lord,i think i just passed through a youtube portal...one moment i was listening to aphex twin, and now....What in the world is this music, and why am i suddenly filled with hope and inspiration...
@obliviongreen So great to hear that music like this makes people feel hopeful and inspired. The refrain certainly gives a big lift but I think the female and male voices singing
these lines that feels so right: "And if the world around you falls apart, then I'll still be here." and "And if the going gets too hard along the way just you call out to me."
Julie - your assessment of this song is so true. It does give an internal hope that we can all remain united. I love this song and always haveand will.
To The Towel Heads that think they are going to get those 72 virgins. Were going to send all of you to Hell. SOON!!!!!! Please America. Let us unite and stop the be nice and they will not hurt us...
Just to whom are you referring to that you use such disparaging terms??? Don't twist the meaning of this beautiful song. Know your history, it wasn't the external enemies that destroyed the Roman Empire, it rotted from within due to internal strife, moral decay and preverse behavior - the same influences that our society faces today - I'd be much more concerned (and united we stand) against THOSE elements!
I was not talking about the Romans. If you read my note carefully, you will see that I'm talking about the damocrats in Washington right now that are going to destroy MY COUNTRY from with in with all this "OH WE NEED TO TALK TO THEM" and This truely is a beautiful song...
Trivia Time!!!!!!!!! Deram Record Label was on the original 45rpm of United We Stand. The Brotherhood of Man was A studio group from England Featuring singers from various pop and folk groups. The QUESTION is: What song was on the FLIP side of this #13 Billboards hit in 1970.
Agreed, and so should all the domestic terrorists and terrorist organizations bend on our destruction as well.... (Remember the Oklahoma City bombing anyone?)...
Reality and ideals often came together in the seventies, then the money people in the eighties said it was all a dream, after they destroyed it... then in the nineties it all came back again, and subsequently again, after 2001 it was all destroyed again; enemies, money, wars...
Why are we debating the meaning of "invasion" in this video? /= First of all guys, we all know exactly what the Japanese did; whether you call it an "invasion" or "a mere attack" is a mere question of your level of smart-assishness.
It's a nice song ;; Stop running off on pointless rabbit trails and appreciate the awesome cheesiness that is TOGETHER (you and I) ~<3
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty! Do NOT associate with those given to CHANGE! Trust in the Lord will all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do NOT be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it springs the issues of life - Proverbs
that is true america as never been invaded and thats the problem americans thing they are super becouse they have never been invaded may be it is time
We've been invaded several times...in 1812 the british burned our capitol down and in the 40's Japan invaded part of Alaska and claimed it as their territory
japan invading alaska was hardly and invation it was pretty much given to them, there was little to no resistance, and war of 1812 was more of a ocean war, yes the british took some land but it was more in the frontier so really not and invation, they did burn down the capitial but that was it they didnt old the land, I guest it is just how you thing about it
but like I siad america as not been invaded at lest not been massively been invaded to were it would really matter becouse pretty much after the invation they were pushed back out
Great song! However, it's a pity that we have to endure mostly pictures of that bunch of eurovision twats that made up the latterday version of this group!!!!!!
I LOVE this song! So many "one hit wonder" groups produced GREAT music!

Brotherhood of Man are a British pop group who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976 with "Save Your Kisses for Me".
MyMerlin1 1 year ago
One of the best, if not THE best, songs of the 70's. Things were so good in the early 70's - a totally different culture and mood from the late 70's, which in my opinion was awful. Amazing how good the music was from 1970 -1975. Oh yeah - the Dawn of Disco and the end of good music!
Petsounz 1 year ago
OK why are there different people in the pics? Which was the group sang had the hit?
marcmgm 1 year ago
@marcmgm There were two completely different versions of (The) Brotherhood of Man. The original line up (which altered a little in its 3 or so years) are featured here. Tony Burrows and Sunny Leslie take the solo's. The second line up were far more successful winning the Eurovision Song Contest and having number 1 and top ten hits in the UK (and probably elsewhere). However, their less soulful more full-on pop sound is usually considered to be inferior to the originals material.

This is where union workers are unique in the World.
There is strength in numbers; and power in the Labor Movement.
Solidarity Forever!
solidarity4 1 year ago 40
Unfortunately greedy ceos and the exposure of some corrupt union heads have done a good job of demonizing the union movement in the eyes of too many americans, and blaming our economic mess on them. Sorry people, but I think it's more than coincedence that the decline of the labor movement coincides with the decline of the middle class. Exporting jobs to countries like China, with no human rights or worker protection, all in the name of cheap goods and big profits, makes no sense.

@solidarity4
Yes, but your numbers are shrinking.

@solidarity4 You're talking about "Look for the Union Label!"

Good lord,i think i just passed through a youtube portal...one moment i was listening to aphex twin, and now....What in the world is this music, and why am i suddenly filled with hope and inspiration...
obliviongreen 2 years ago 2
@obliviongreen So great to hear that music like this makes people feel hopeful and inspired. The refrain certainly gives a big lift but I think the female and male voices singing
these lines that feels so right: "And if the world around you falls apart, then I'll still be here." and "And if the going gets too hard along the way just you call out to me."

To The Towel Heads that think they are going to get those 72 virgins. Were going to send all of you to Hell. SOON!!!!!! Please America. Let us unite and stop the be nice and they will not hurt us...
CharlesT2010 2 years ago 5
Just to whom are you referring to that you use such disparaging terms??? Don't twist the meaning of this beautiful song. Know your history, it wasn't the external enemies that destroyed the Roman Empire, it rotted from within due to internal strife, moral decay and preverse behavior - the same influences that our society faces today - I'd be much more concerned (and united we stand) against THOSE elements!
tubeyounity 2 years ago
I was not talking about the Romans. If you read my note carefully, you will see that I'm talking about the damocrats in Washington right now that are going to destroy MY COUNTRY from with in with all this "OH WE NEED TO TALK TO THEM" and This truely is a beautiful song...

Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it springs the issues of life - Proverbs

chandlerjoed79 2 years ago
japan invading alaska was hardly and invation it was pretty much given to them, there was little to no resistance, and war of 1812 was more of a ocean war, yes the british took some land but it was more in the frontier so really not and invation, they did burn down the capitial but that was it they didnt old the land, I guest it is just how you thing about it
