You are mixing 3 systems, I think. You are talking about an OS (Optical Scan), DimsNet ES, and the accuvote TSX machine. Less than 5% or so (as I understand it) use the ES because it is very old. The OS uses paper ballots with check boxes. You then feed them into a large locked ballot box (Diebold, Es&S both make them)...
What's the reason for the change in the way the voting system?
I don't know if this can't be tampered with doing it by computer. Just simple old filling out by your hand and having to personally put it into the box with someone watching..is much better.
They changed everything due to the problems in the 2000 election with hanging chads. But they obviously forgot about verification. If we are to use electronic voting responsibly, we need paper trails at the very minimum, otherwise elections can and will easily be hacked, it is as simple as that.
If done responsibly with paper trails, electronic voting can make it much easier. Even better, the paper trails should be optically scannable. So that at any time, verification can be done. We would be much better off with all paper ballots, than using evoting with no paper trails.
