I would think Sissel herself would take it as a compliment to be favorably compared vocally with a woman internationally regarded as one of the best singers ever--independent of your disregard for her personality.

You might also consider that a public figure's persona is not always an indicator of the way they act in their private lives. George Steinbrenner (publicly) was considered insufferable; privately, he was known to be a very kind, charitable man.

Streisand earned her iconic status it the same way Sissel earned hers: by decades of hard work. She started off in freshman chorus, worked nightclubs while a teenager, did summer stock, and off-off broadway--all by 1959.

Acknowledging Streisand's fame doesn't diminish Sissel--although your outrage at the thought makes you seem particularly stupid.

Sissel is to me the most gifted singer in the entire world, such a natural and beautiful voice! And she has a wonderful personality. I have been to one of her christmasconserts here in Sweden 2008 and to see her on stage was simply wonderful. She brought the entire audience with her from the very first tune to the very last. Me and my husband bought tickets to her christmasconcert this year 2009 in Gothenburg the day they where released. Looking forward to it!

Sissel Kyrkjebø, was born June 24, 1969 in Bergen, Norway. Most people, on this Continent, properly know her for singing the Olympic Hymn (Hymne Olympique) at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway.

I agree that Enya & Sissel are both incredibly talented, and similar in some ways. One of the biggest differences, in my opinion, is that it is very rare that Enya smiles during a performance. Sissel, on the other hand, flashes her heart-stopping smile often, unless the song is very serious. She (Sissel) absolutely loves what she is doing and it is apparent when she sings.

When you take into consideration that Sissel has mastered so many forms--opera, rock, gospel, country-western, folk, sacred, and pop, at least in my opinion she is the greatest living female vocalist. No one can touch her.

I'm certain here in America someone would make the case for Streisand or Renee Fleming but while they have mastered one form, they don't have the incredible scope Sissel has.

I truly hope she knows the depth to which she moves people. Some greats never do.

@YD8189 I agree with you completely. I've been listening to her for less than 2 months and I have almost all her CDs and DVDs. I had never imagined that any one could sound as good as Sissel does ... no one else I've ever heard even comes close. And the only thing better than listening to her sing is watching her sing.

She posts on her facebook wall occasionally and reads the comments there. Maybe she does know how much she means to here admirers.

My instincts--and personal experiences (not relative to her)--lead me to think that she is such a humble woman that, like so many who possess both great talent and great humility, she might not. Sunday, I spoke for a few minutes with one of the U.S.A's most-respected clerics and he seemed genuinely surprised

when I acknowledged the great gift he had.

I've followed her career for 26 years, watched a lot of interviews (on norwegian tv channels) and I can tell you that her soul is so pure and filled with love. She knows very well how much she means to people. That's her "call". She have said many times that music is something that touches all humans, in music there is no borders or races. Singing is something she just have to do.

Sissel has an amazing voice, and she just pulls you in with her engaging stage presence. Her interview brings out her warm and genuine personality. She doesn't seem the least effected by her success. She speaks better English than many Americans I know. I think it's a shame that her former manager did not promote more, outside of Scandinavia early in her career. I first heard her sing only about a year ago - wish it had been much sooner. Thanks for posting pctv1.

Very good points! But Sissel is different. She is happy wiht her carrier as it is. Very sucsessful in Scandinavia, and she makes more money than she can spend. That's Sissel. I'm certain she could be a world star along with Celine Dion or Barbara Streisand, but I'm just as sure she wouldn't pursue such a goal.

Thanks for your insight, Kroeg11. Since you are from Norway, I'm sure you know much more about her than I do. I just wish more of the world knew her and her voice. If I had not accidentally stumbled onto her on a PBS broadcast, I might very well still not know of her. Many of the people I have asked if they know of Sissel, say that they do not, and I think that's a shame.
