Master Chief is the rank. Most people call him that because they do not know his real name is John. In battle, people are sometimes nicknamed by their ranks. That's why John is called Master Chief, also because it gives him a more legendary aura to not have a known name. I don't care what anyone says. I read the books and ALL Spartans are a part of ONI (Office of Naval Intelligence).

Spartans are Navy, Marines call all Navy personnel "swabbies" and also called MC such. Also the Spartan II program is an ONI Section III project. They are Navy, no doubt about it.

It's similar to how in Halo Reach, they call your character Lieutenant, they usually call people by their rank.

MAN, did the person who did this even read the novels? The spatan 2 project come from ONI/Office of Naval Intelligence. That's NAVY not Marines. And the Spartans serve under the NAVY. Why do the hell they call the lead character Master Chief? That's a Naval rank, NOT a MARINE rank. To me, spartans are the space age equivilent of NAVY SEALs. Go to book 3 named "1st strike" and a spartan said if it wasn't of the super armor and body augumatation they would be like any other NAVSPEC warfare team.

Well If you were talking to someone and say John they'd say which John? If you had said Master Cheif they would have known. And count how many times people call MC John versus how many times they call him Master Cheif or The Master Cheif. In the first 2 minutes of Halo 2 Johnson calls him "The Master Cheif". And I know what a Master Cheif is and that it is Navy. My Mom's best friend from High School is maried to a Senior Chief Petty Officer.

Master Chief Petty Officer is a rank in the Navy and the US Coast Guard. Also the patch at the memorial at the end of Halo 3 is for a MCPO in the Navy, thus MC is Navy.

The Marines Commercial I got the audio from was from the US, so I thought the flag should be the US's and I titled it "Spartan Recruitment Commercial" because it's Halo. However, now that I think about it, I think I should have made it the UNSC's flag.
