Penn was brilliant and very brave for taking that role on and fully committing to it as a straight actor. I was very proud of him and moved by his performance. I don't even mind so much that he won the Oscar(except that he didn't friggin mention the REAL Harvey Milk.)

Having said all that......There was one male performance that shattered me that year (like none since Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain), and that was Mickey's in The Wrestler. He plain ripped my heart out.

Rourke's performance will be remembered as one of the greatest in film history. This was SO deserved. The oscars should be embarassed - Sean Penn seemed to be - and he deserves credit for acknowledging Mickey. I think its interesting that you didn't really see Penn out there pushing his performance - I think he is a stand up guy and he realized that Mickey deserved the limelight. Now they should do a film together. Screw political correctness - especially when it comes to art.

The Golden Globes are voted on by the Hollywood foreign press association which is really 50-60 people who are journalists who cover the U.S film industry but are affiliated with news organizations outside the U.S ..and the Academy Award is voted on by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences so essentially the globes are a select group of people voting and the Oscars would be your peers so yea. not the same thing.
