  • Not a bad interpretation...choice of music was excellent too, especially when the Automata name appears. I voted for this one cause I always like Gabe's greyscale comics...plus Detective Noir is always a winner =)

  • Quite excellent! Beautiful, and, in my opinion, fits the setting of automata perfectly.

In fact, it makes me wish for a movie.

  • This is fantastic. I fell in love with Automata since the first strip, and this suits it so well. Can't wait for the next one!

  • Awesome, I'm glad you like. It's nice that people are getting a chance to see the Page One version of the video too. Thanks for watching!

  • Creative people stump me. I don't know where it all comes from, but I'm very grateful.. Nice work.

  • Being called creative is a great compliment, thank you. When the first comic came out, I was literally chasing what I was hearing in my head and trying to catch before it disappeared. I got most of it and found some more for this video, thanks for watching and commenting!

  • The last frame is especially chilling; really well done. Good choice on the overtone blur effect for the end title.

  • awesome job on this, i was really impressed!

  • I will listen to the end of the music, because I love it.

More than Automata, actually, but if it inspired YOU to do this, it was worth it.

    ;)

  • Interesting! Particularly around 1:53, the music manages to be both gritty and uplifting simultaneously. That is a hard feet to pull off!

  • i loved this comic when i first saw it, i love the newer ones too and this music is great with this

  • Great work, and I agree, Automata is a great stand-alone idea. Gabe's artwork is awesome on it, and I hope he doesn't ever outsource it like he did with Lookouts. I liked that idea much more when it was Gabe drawing it.

I thought automata was the best idea out of the choices they presented that time, and was surprised Lookouts was picked.. I think it was because it was first. Automata almost reminds me of something Alan Moore would write. It'd be a great graphic novel. I'd buy it .

  • I agree about agreeing. (lol, sorry, i had to). It kind of reminds me of I, Robot and V for Vendetta. I personally think that Automata should be made into a full graphic novel.

(Lookouts might be able to pull it off too, but it would have to be Gabe's art.)

  • That was amazing, and I would read Automata every day forever.

  • The piano at the end reminds me a little of Nine Inch Nails.

  • pretty cool! I recommend you edit it down a bit though. The action in the comic takes, at the very most, 40 seconds. Chop it down to a minute with credits and it will feel more movie-like.

  • That was badass man.

  • Really great video, the presentation of this comic as a kind of video with audio soundtrack context to back it was really a treat. Maybe we will see your name in some big movies soon or something. If you could do this with more of the Automata comics it would be great.

Can't wait to see the next Automata!

  • Automata's been my favorite so far of all the comics!

  • very nice =D

  • very nice =)

  • Very nice. Beginning reminds of some of the music from Midgar in FFVII. And reminding of that is a great thing.

  • i really would like to see this expanded on in hard copy. I love the premise. I would definitely buy this if it turned into a graphic novel series.

  • Very nice. Has an interesting feel to it.

  • This was so good I think I pooped a little

  • I thought the way you did the animation was a little jerky in the beginning, but the music is really good. I am interested to see how many hits this will have within 48 hours of being posted on Penny-Arcade. Keep up the good work!

  • This is quite something. I hope they'll do an Automata GN at some point, or a Lookouts one.

  • Reminds me of the Deus Ex soundtrack in some ways; To come close to Alexander Brandon's work is something to be very proud of :)

    Sounds fantastic, keep it up!

  • This is really something! You guys should consider collaboration.

  • Really wish this had continued instead of Lookouts.

  • Apparently this one will continue as well.

the votes were so close between the two that both were optioned to be continued, with the penny arcade guys doing automata, and Becky Dreistadt and Oliver Grigsby finishing up lookouts.

According to the current front page, They hope to be putting Automata up sometime before the month is up.

I was very happy to hear this, as I preferred automata, too.

  • Radical news, thanks!

  • Really good. Congrats!

  • This is really good. It feels like an old sluth movie background music, but...with a "newer" sound to it. I like it :)

  • Thanks for this, great soundtrack to an amazing comic!

  • Hey all, thanks for continued nice comments. I'm happy that Mike and Jerry liked it enough to link to it. I'm glad you all have enjoyed it!

  • Automata screams Naoki Urasawa's Pluto to me...

Which is a very good thing.

  • Well, he's hardly the only guy to do the whole persecuted robot thing.

  • only 300 people viewed this? weird.. how can PA crash servers like slashdot if nobody clicks tycho's links?

  • This is a subtle one, I didn't catch that it was a link to a YouTube video until I accidentally clicked my PA bookmark - I thought it was a link to the Automata strips, which is a pretty normal assumption.

  • I'm digging the sound of this. You did a grand job. I love it.

  • Very nice.

  • A movie in this format with this style of music would be pure awesome.

  • Agreed. They should write up a script just for the hell of it, and maybe somebody would pick it up.

I've been craving something like Blade Runner for years, and this might sate that particular appetite.

Movie or no, I await the comic's release gleefully.

  • I'd imagine there'd be more views. :O

It is fantastic. Good work. XD

  • Voted for this in both polls; so glad it's the getting the for'realls treatment.

  • Outstanding score. Very appropriate feel, and yeah, watched/listened thru to the end. Well done.

  • Wonderful score, it really captures the setting and characters quite nicely. I'm really looking forward to Automata. Just an observation: it really reminds me of Caves of Steel (Asimov's 2nd robot novel).

  • Thanks for the nice feedback everyone, glad you liked it!

  • Pretty sweet, I like it. To really bring the noir thing together you should have some bluesy harmon-muted trumpet - maybe extend that middle part where everything drops out, have it play back and forth with the piano, kind of a jazzy call and repeat thing. Just my 2 cents worth. I think that would put it over the top, so to speak.

  • I originally wanted a muted trumpet but didn't have a decent sample of it. Instead I opted for making a regular trumpet sound "robotic", to fit the subject matter better.

  • I have to agree with people here, Lookouts is borderline awful. This looks much better, loyal readers will enjoy Automata. Very steampunk.

  • Decopunk actually, there obviously isn't anything (or much) that's steam powered.

  • Terrific, very noir. Also a nice job with the pans. We all owe a debt to Ken Burns for making still images come alive.

  • I like this concept a lot more than Lookouts. I'm interested to see what they do with it.

  • Agreed, Lookouts blows. The whole "tiebreaker" thing was a kick in the balls to loyal readers.

  • Very nicely done. As others have said before me, the ominous sounding music fits very well to the way you've laid out the panels in the video.

  • I really like it, the piano gives that old detective movie/comic feel, but with modern interpretation. Very fitting to the comic, especially that ominous sound.

  • Very nice.. if I had an mp3 it'd go into my psp in a heartbeat

  • You can download the MP3 by following my site link from the "info" box, then clicking the "Automata" project.

  • nice very well done!

  • That's impressive work on that music. It definitely fits well with the comic.
