  • dude you tear this song APART! so good!

  • Wow, i know i'm 3 years late in responding to this, but this is really a great performance of and improvisation on Wayne Shorter's Black Nile. Only criticism i could come up with is that it lacks some calmer moments, but otherwise it's great jazz.

It sounds way better on piano by the way than any brass band. At least, that's my opinion.

  • U are sooo GOOD. it made me cry

  • great drive!

  • One of my favourite songs of all time, and a fantastic version, thank you! Check out the Black Nile video from my uploads if you wish, where I'm playing it alongside one of my jazz piano pupils at school, in a version I transcribed of Kenny Kirkland's wonderful solo. Only goes so far, as it's sight-reading, but we love it!

  • Fabulous Shorter and fabulous pianist!

  • BEAST.

  • yeaa man. it's reay cool!!! realy realy good!!!

  • Oh my god that is amazing!

  • That was so killing man, your licks are the shit. I wish I had chops like you on any instrument

  • Im sooooooo transcribing your lines to guitar (may God have mercy opon my soul). You sound awesome. You are one of many reasons I tend to come back to piano players for inspiration when guitarists wont do...

Thanks for posting, gonna subsribe on your channel.

    Best regards, Sandemose

  • hehe, at the beginning to about half way in i was thinking 'hrmphh, not using much range, but then it picked up alot, great stuff, will watch again!

wayne always has the best tunes, whenever i've hitting the real book i always flip to a random page and half the time it's wayne...probably because i play his stuff so much :)

  • Wow this is awesome!

  • Great Playing.....I loved what you're left hand was doing aslo. I play a little jazz piano and trying to understand improv. and when I see and hear people like you I don't know if I should keep going or give up.. LOL

  • Super great, it swings! A lot of ideas, clearly exposed, driving you from the first to the last note. Thanks!

    watch?v=XtX8ABoXkcg

  • That was so smooth, like caramel and chocolate. The solo and the rhythm section locked so tightly with the chords, changes, and timing.

  • they locked so tightly, because it was most likely a recording like an aebersold.

  • I want to learn piano now.

  • Man! u can swing ! This is a great chart!

  • That's nice man!

  • Wow. Whatever you did at 3:51 was awesome.

    Amazing playing!

  • Wow great playing!! I thought Kenny Kirkland's version on youtube was good (do a search), yours swings equally hard. Can you tell me the chords you're using here to improvise? My ears aren't yet that good...

  • K could I ask you a question?

First of all thats a KILLER vid

second of all, what did you do at that lick at about 3:09 that just sounds kind of "out" but not wrong? Like, what notes did you play over what chords to get that sound?

  • Thanks for your comments.

At 3.09 thats probably some altered dominant - key is D minor so dominant chord is A7 with probably sharp 5 b9, and over it goes a Eb9 arpeggio pattern, tritone substitution in action.

    Hope that helps.

  • Beautiful playing..just beautiful

  • genial!

  • Very nice!

  • Excellent. I love Night Dreamer.

  • Me too. I think it might be my favorite Wayne Shorter album (JuJu is a close contender).

  • Interesting lines and very polished! *****

  • Well you know anything from this era will be an automatic 5 stars from me. ;-)

Great song and great playing. I particularly like the way your solo progressed and increased in intensity throughout.
