As for all the debating about wether or not wheels or legs are more efficient, on a flat surface a wheel will beat legs all the time. In rough terrain like rocks, legs will beat wheels.

As for wether or not we would have evolved with wheels if the world was flat ... possibly, yes, though I think hoverboat is more likely. Much easier to develop skirts and lungs that blow air underneath the body.

He forgot that nature is not plane road surfaces or rails.

With legs some of the forward motion get into vertical "up and down" motions - that's NOT very energy efficient way to travel, especially not at high speeds.

But in rough terrain, wheels does not work very well - that's why legs is better in the nature.

Otherwise cool project - the walking motion is not the easiest to reproduce when building a robot

The wheels used are not for acceleration, That being said, his arguement is that it is more efficient to POWER mechanical legs, as opposed to powering a wheel.

The power is not applied to the skates or chariot wheels. Those wheels only serve to allow the vehicle to move freely across space.

The reason animals don't have wheels -

1: So they can climb mountains trees etc.

2: So the blood vessels don't become tangled.

In general wheels are more efficient on flat ground as they have less rolling resistance, but it looks like george bush has some coaster skates on so that the momentum keeps going longer and it doesn't damage the walking mechanism by forcing it to move faster than it was designed down hills etc
