And I just watched the listened to the JLo version here on youtube and the amount of people saying Jennifer's version is better makes me laugh. These people must be dreaming. Jennifer copied Mariah and tried to sabotage her career. Tommy was in on it as well. All happened from about 1999-2001. Same thing happened with Loverboy and Jennifer stole a sample from her.

Who would ever think that Jennifer Lopez would do a better version of Diana Ross's song than Mariah Carey. Jennifer's was beautiful and flowing. Mariah tried to hard - tried to do to much to the song. It's a simple, beautiful, melancholy song. Understated but at the same time powerful.

That whispery, singing-style she started doing around this time was the official beginning of the end for voice, IMO. This performance is so FLAT, she's going thru the emotions. Yes, she can hit notes and 'blow', but there is no REAL emotion or feeling in her performance. She's a studio singer and nothing more, all flash and substance. I guess that's why her fat, crazy ass is selling JUNK on home shopping channels now. You'd never see Diana, Whitney, Celine or Barbra doing that....

I was expecting a group of background singers to add to the final verse, to add volume and depth.

I think it could've used a cresendo, or some more depth.

I have said this before on many of Mariah and Celine Covers of classic songs.. the reason their level of song reaches the ranks of the original is because they somehow make the song sound like it was written for them as an original,..and That is what a true musical artist is... someone who can take any song and make it their own... No. Here's the thing. J.Lo's version is produced better. The instruments are complimenting J.Lo's voice. With Mariah's version the emphasis is on vocal performance. Did anyone notice that she used all of her vocal range on this performance? In the first verse she goes down to her baritone level, and as the song is ending she is in her whistle register. That's hot! Like 1% of the singers out right now can do that. The production of the song is the weak point.

This version is just ok. But what makes Diana's version so special besides being the first. You can actually close your eyes and see the story she's telling. It even makes you think back about a moment or time in your life when this song may have been relavent to you. This one just doesn't do that for me. You don't do vocal styling with this song. Probably the weakest song she's ever recorded. Production-wise, I think it's on par with karaoke, and vocally far below her usual high standard. 1998 wasn't a great year for her vocally, but this just sounds like she cut it after one take and thought "fuck it, that'll do."
