My 2cents on the whole touhou/cave thing:

I prefer 90s shmups, like Toaplan, Taito, Raizing, so while i am not a huge fan of bullet hell, there is some enjoyment had.

Cave is a top-notch producer, whose levels are often varied, lots of fun, with great game mechanics to match.

Touhou games are just kind of boring - all the music sounds the same, the character art is laughable, and all the stages are the same - there's nothing really to hook me there.

I don't begrudge people their Touhou games, but it is hard to find any argument that can legitimize a preference for Touhou games over Cave games in terms of gameplay and fun-factor. Most people fall back to the Touhous themselves, or the music, or the fandom obsessed with lesbian shipping. Hey, more power to ya but DonPachi's a whole lot more entertaining than any Scarlet Devil or Imperishable Night.

I understand it's a one-man effort -ZUN works well with what he's got- but Cave is Ace.

@emperorIng360 Touhou is a bit more newbie friends. DDP can be absolute ball busting in terms of getting a 1cc, let alone the requirements for the 2nd loop. Cave has more budget and better design, but they're insanely unfriendly to newbies.

@OmgSuiseiseki actually cave games is harder then touhou, the bullet speed is much faster in CAVE games, and in Touhou, you can have a "second chance" when you die, as long as you have bombs. press the bomb button at the moment your character got shot, you will be resurrected and fire off a powerful version of your bombs.

see how easy touhou is? yea in CAVE games, you don't get that.

@jimmykudo1 The main reason why CAVE game are harder are not bullet speed but much less lives/bombs and the way they arrange bullets. Some small enemies fire bullets right towards the hitbox while bigger enemies spread bullets all over the place, blocking escape routes. Once the player makes a wrong move and lose control of the situation it's nearly impossible to get back control without using bombs.

@jimmykudo1 In most Lunatic levels of Touhou games the bullet speed is not slower than the bullet speed of first loop of Dodonpachi.

The second chance you mentioned is only in TH08 and costs two bombs instead of one(unless you only have one). Although you can also use bombs right before you get hit in other Touhou games, it's very hard to react in time.

Failing to 1cc is one thing but failing to improve skills is another. I won't consider it as fail as long as I can still go further.
