I visited Quebec City four years ago, stopping briefly in Montreal to catch the train. This video really makes me want to spend a week in Montreal and visit all the neighborhoods.

I like how "Street Food" usually finds a controversial topic to discuss while simultaneously making the show about food. It was interesting to learn about the struggles between the two language cultures and how the two language cultures, in turn, view each others food culture. Overall aside from the difficulties between the two languages, it seems that food is a bridge that brings people together at the end of the day.

I lived in Montreal for 48 years and just left there at the end of 2007. I can vouch for the city's hospitality and multi culturalism. There is no better place in the World for great food or friendliness. However, the French only laws are racist oriented and need to be repealed. The English speaking community was systematically attacked and destroyed by separatist governments. It has been a real struggle in recent years with total implementation of Language apartheid.

Access to french services outside of Quebec is a struggle for french canadians, anywhere in Canada. The bilingual population you are talking about, are, again, french canadian. English canadians resist learning french, even when living in Quebec.
you don't know much about english montrealers. i learned french as most people living here under 30. we did more than half our courses in french. we did history and math in french and outperformed french students who wrote tests in their mother tongue.

The Charter of the French Language passed in the 70's says that all children need to attend public schools in French. OR you go to an all-English speaking school if you are there temporarily or something. Bilingual education programmes are rare but sometimes available since the rest of the country is English speaking and movement occurs. Of course not the same as Hispanics who do not come from the US. Why should the US system be modelled around you? Your logic fails.
My logic perfectly makes sense becuase just like quebec which was historically franco-phone, Arizona and the rest of the southwest where historically hispani-phone before being robbed by the gringos. Did you see the stats? 60% of Quebec population IS bilingual. They teach english at school and in fact if you want a job you are strongly encourage to learn it. Quebec is not against english.

Hello, I'm a french speaking ''Québecois'' living (and born) in Montreal. I understand that the english communities can feel ''attacked'' by bill 101; but you have to understand that for centuries (in Quebec), the french speaking majority was living in an english society. I think everything in Montreal should be bilingual, and that english speaking people in Quebec should know french basics.
I was born and raised in Montreal for 47 years until I had to leave the Province for work. Je parle Francais aussi, mai le loi...is biassed. I never oppressed anyone in my life, but I am victimized by unjust laws that attack me and my community. Bilingualism is important for the French Culture as well as the English Culture. The law is a division and intended to be so. My family is in poverty because of the prejedice that comes with unjust hiring practices. Unity is required not division.

Justifying the oppression of language is not a solution to saving another language. Unity is the only way to get along. Otherwise there is division, and division always leads to violence. There used to be approx 1,000,000 in the English speaking community. Over the last 30 years, that has dwindled to 285,000 due to the systematic attacks on our community by separatist laws. Those that remain behind are the older generation for the most part. No English signs in Quebec Government buildings, hospitals, even our community names were squeezed out in favor of French names. The Anglo Irish have a long history in Quebec too, but we are not given any respect! Respect is a two way street.

In Quebec, the english speaking communities are much too small to be a danger for the french speaking people(7.7%). Québecois count for about 23% of the population of Canada... I like how "Street Food" usually finds a controversial topic to discuss while simultaneously making the show about food. It was interesting to learn about the struggles between the two language cultures and how the two language cultures, in turn, view each others food culture. Overall aside from the difficulties between the two languages, it seems that food is a bridge that brings people together at the end of the day.

I lived in Montreal for 48 years and just left there at the end of 2007. I can vouch for the city's hospitality and multi culturalism. There is no better place in the World for great food or friendliness. However, the French only laws are racist oriented and need to be repealed. The English speaking community was systematically attacked and destroyed by separatist governments. It has been a real struggle in recent years with total implementation of Language apartheid.

LOL sorry but Stats are stas and according to Candadian Statistics, 60% of the popualtion in Quebec are Bi-lingual, where as in the rest of Canda, only 10%, --most of them people of Quebec who moved to other providences, and of course childen of immigrants whose parents think learnign french ins't a bad idea so they put them in french immersion programs at school. Access to french services outside of Quebec is a struggle for french canadians, anywhere in Canada. The bilingual population you are talking about, are, again, french canadian. English canadians resist learning french, even when living in Quebec.

The Charter of the French Language passed in the 70's says that all children need to attend public schools in French. OR you go to an all-English speaking school if you are there temporarily or something. Bilingual education programmes are rare but sometimes available since the rest of the country is English speaking and movement occurs. Of course not the same as Hispanics who do not come from the US. Why should the US system be modelled around you? Your logic fails.

I understand that the english communities can feel ''attacked'' by bill 101; but you have to understand that for centuries (in Quebec), the french speaking majority was living in an english society. There used to be approx 1,000,000 in the English speaking community. Over the last 30 years, that has dwindled to 285,000 due to the systematic attacks on our community by separatist laws. Those that remain behind are the older generation for the most part. No English signs in Quebec Government buildings, hospitals, even our community names were squeezed out in favor of French names. The Anglo Irish have a long history in Quebec too, but we are not given any respect! Respect is a two way street.

I know that it can be hard for an unilingual english person to find a job in Quebec; this is why, at least in montreal, everyone should be bilingual. Again, it would be impossible for an unilingual french guy to find a job in Canada. I understand your call for unity, but unity start with respect of our differences. If an english guy, living in Quebec, INSIST on not learning french (and I know a couple) he has 9 other provinces to go to. Quebec is the only french society in North America.

I think it's good that the French Canadiens have fought so hard and made sure Quebec remains a French providance, becuase if this wasnot the case, French language and Culture wodl ahve been lost. This goes to shows that in someways Canada is much more multi-cultural than the USA, and being a Mosaic is better than being a Melting Pot. DGMW, problems with race do exist, but they don't come nearly as close as they do in the USA.

Actually the USA is one of the most open countries in displaying and dealing with its racism. Most Latin American countries sweep it under the rug and don't deal with it. And that is the reason why the class structure in Latin America follows a racial line: the ruling elite and upper middle class are white; there is a small middle class made up of European immigrants and some from mix ancestry; and the working class the poor are made up mostly of brown skin, black and native peoples.

Much work neds tobe done in our country about crime & murder, but those thing still R thehighest in the so-called industralised wrold in UR country. And no, the USA is nowhere near your crime rate or homicide rate. Please go pass that lie off to someone who does not know any better.
And I would bet that even Venezuela's official poverty numbers are higher than 33% in reality.
Please compare your country to similar developing countries like Columbia, Bolivia, Mexico, or South Africa.

If you mesure poverty the wayit was measured int he 1950s & 60s-as your presidential candidate Ralph Nader has done, you see that 100 million people are poor in the U.S.Which makes sense, Housing is out of reach, so is health-dental- & vision care, at this point poverty rate in venezuela is 33%, which quite anaccomplishment from 80% in 1998, yet I'mnot happy, much work need to be done!& Much more work needs otbe done in US,Us is ruled by Monied eleites & that must stop for real change to occur!

Ah & crime rate & Homicide rate are the Highest in among "Developed" nations! BUt like I said we do have our own problem with crime & homicide & if our president doesn't do something quickly his popularity might drop! But what I mentioend are fundamental changed that need to take place in the US for it tobe a real democracy! Hell NAFTA & CAFTA passed without reffurendums-at the objection of many Labor activists & citizens, Polls showed most people opposed it.

I am not sure if you even know what democracy is. Venezuela surely has never consistently experienced it and it surely isn't one know. It is caught up in the cult of personality and ego of Hugo Chavez. The simple fact is that a nation's development and stability cannot hinge on the actions and personality of one man. The institutions and traditions must are supposed to be bigger than any individual.
Bottom line is we have had over 220 years of relative stability. Yours has not.

Yes I do Democracy is Gov't ruled by the people, which the US is not,we have always experienced democracy along with a smal period of military dictatorship which was US bakced & you style of PLutocracy,but we are a democracy once again,you expose your typical USian sutpidity,were not cuaghtup in the cult of Hugo Chavez,the US caughtup in the cult of Barack Obama.We have many democratic insitutions, & the 220 years of relative stability have only existed for your upper classes!

Ask Hispanics in Florida, The Southwest 7 Puerto rico if they had 220 years of relative stability, Ask Blacks if they had 220 years of it, Ask Cajuns & Creoles, Ask First Nation Peoples if they had 220 years of realtive stability, Ask you working class non-land owning working class White Population if they had 220 years of realtive stability? NO to all of them, Working Class population is faster growing, Professionals & Rich are growing, But Middle class isn't even Majority anyone the US!

And why do those people still come here and stay in the U.S.? Because they do see and experience, even with all its flaws, as a place of opportunity, relative peace, free from the internal strife of military coups and dictatorships, where social classes are written and set in stone as in most countries; it is a place where people may have to work hard just to keep their heads above water, but at least they can feed themselves and their families. Not a perfect country but better than most.
