le mauvais traitement des autochtones, la vilaine loi lingustique, des mangeux de poutine, les french quebecois, les problemes des étinérants.......quel mauvais portrait du street food a montreal.... et qul mauvais reportage....

  • i love how al jazeera emphasizes the issue of native americans in their segments about america and was relieved when it was pointed how ironic the conflict between english and french speakers was when neither of them are even the true people of the land. i have a great respect for al jazeera its upsetting how it is portrayed in the us and how shit like this would never even be found on cnn.

  • Wait....so what happened to the street food? I got a cultural lesson, but the only street food they talked about was poutine.

  • Culture and food in Quebec are simply indivisible. To understand food you have to understand culture.

  • The wrold will be a much better place when people do see latin america & venezuela which has kept millions of low-income famalies in the supposedly most powerfu country on earth warm during the winter months. The world willbe mcuh better place & be able to solve much of its problems much better once the US empire falls!

  • That's nice. The world be a Utopia. There will be no more conflicts. No more racism. No more aggression. The environment will be like the Garden of Eden. Lions and sheep will sleep together. The human race will be peaceful, communal, sharing all goods and resources for the greater good. There will be rainbows every day. Cancer, AIDS, heart disease will be a thing of the past.

And of these wonderful things will happen, of course, when the USA falls.

Wow! Your life must really be empty.

  • Your life is empty, that is why you like to accuseother wihtout any base that their life is empty!Gringos are completely a people without a soul! The world will be much much better place once the US empire falls & northern European gringo previlidge fall wtih it.You have no soul! Sorry but that is the hard thruth & as Andrew Basevich says gringos have a serious problems with being self critical becuase US exceptionalism has brain washed them since day one!

  • Just like those who stereotype the native Canadians, you are stereotyping Americans. I agree there are vast, vast problems here and many of us are brainwashed by our controlled media, but we are not soulless people. The majority of people who voted for Obama did so in order to stop the wars and nation-building. They will be disappointed, but their heart was in the right place.

  • Well I was playing his card in reverse to see how he would response."Nation-Building"? Are you kidding me?--if anything thereisnation destruction going on?IN regard to votes for Obama--Are you sure? Are you sure they didn't vote forhim becuase McCaine was too old &they liked his GQ looks?--only time will tell if they will hold the Obama-well 3rd clinton administration accountable as they did w/Bush!--This is the problem w/those who have partymen mentalities!-The other guy was a partyman!

  • Perhaps a better phrase for it is "empire building", the base we are building in Iraq is allegedly as large at the Vatican. We destroy, then establish ourselves within a sovereign country while allegedly building it back up.

I can't know what's in people's hearts when voting for Obama or anyone else, but I believe that most people thought they were doing the right thing. While I'm sure there were some superficial voters, I don't think it was the majority. That said, I voted 3rd party.

  • you vote 4 Bob Barr or Cynthia MCKinney?Let's see how it goes even my president is saying let's give Obama a chance & is eager to talk to him.But he is populist idealist too!I just wish the fox guy was more aprecaitive of the fact that we have helped thousands of poor households in your country to make it throug the winters when Oil price was high! But no he tought it was a publicity stunt!Hopefully as things get worst Obama might be compelled to purge the Clinton team too & really start fresh!

  • I voted for Barr.

Yeah, I'll give Obama a chance (I don't have much choice) but am very skeptical due to many of his cabinet choices (Hillary, Rahm Emanuel, etc.), but yeah, we'll see.

I, for one, am appreciative towards Venezuela for how you've helped us. Plus, one of my favorite bands is Venezuelan: Los Amigos Invisibles! Thank you!

  • Eso es Chica! Entonces quedamos en contacto! We stay in touch!

  • Si! ¡tenga un gran día!

  • 3) The mcbinn's irish pub story is a fraud, this journalist should have investigated this one thoroughly. Inspectors visited that pub because they didn't want to serve clients and had menus in english only. The old ads on the wall aren't subjected to bill 101 either, they are considered art/cultural.--Thank you Brother Malekyo

  • Excellent reportage, 2 bad she focuses 2 much on the language issue, seriously it's not a day 2 day issue that montrealers have to deal with.

    1) there's no language police, inspectors go to buisnesses only after complaints from citizens. It's not pro-active like a police force.

    2) trademarks aren't subject to bill 101, so companies don't have to change them. But some decide to change their name to be more in tune with the local market, it's a marketing decision first.---Brother Malekyo

  • The zealousness of the Office de la langue?

There is no such thing as the Québec Language Police. The general objective of Québecs French Language Charter is to protect the right of every citizen of Québec to work & receive services and information in French in Québec something that has often been problematic especially in Montreal even though French-speakers are the majority of the population.

The Gazette has always been a racist newspaper & have no idea about our realities.-Br. Teve

  • No matter if it's English or French they use, Native Canadians still stereotyped...

  • I like how "Street Food" usually finds a controversial topic to discuss while simultaneously making the show about food. It was interesting to learn about the struggles between the two language cultures and how the two language cultures, in turn, view each others food culture. Overall aside from the difficulties between the two languages, it seems that food is a bridge that brings people together at the end of the day.

  • It not really a dificulty betwen tow languages as it is a dificulty for the anglo-phones to accept that another group of people under theri rulehavenamaged to maintain there culture andlanguage and getthe new comers to adopt it as well, whilethey do thier best to resist it.

  • More Maudite, s'il vous plais!

    Cheers,

    from B.C.

  • You guys should settle your differences over a glass of Maudite and a huge plate of poutine....

    Cheers..a votre santé

  • And its true, regardless of what says who and who believes what: the french and english will always remain the imperial invaders.

  • but for some reason you feel it's Okay to speak englihs becuase the enlihs where good inperial invadors and speaking french is bad.

  • 6:13 Anybody know that track?? ive fallen in love with it!!!! merci!

  • I lived in Montreal for 48 years and just left there at the end of 2007. I can vouch for the city's hospitality and multi culturalism. There is no better place in the World for great food or friendliness. However, the French only laws are racist oriented and need to be repealed. The English speaking community was systematically attacked and destroyed by separatist governments. It has been a real struggle in recent years with total implementation of Language apartheid.

  • The English community hangs by a thread with little to no prospects for survival. How can someone approve discrimination and call it fair?

  • The english community is stomping all over people all over the world everywhere else, so please, look at thing in perspective!

  • It is not community that stomps on people but a very few sick individuals that control the issuance of money. I suggest you stop watching propaganda on TV and plug into community. Equality is essential if mankind is to survive.

  • No I'm not interested in equality that makes the world an easier place 4 lazy mono-cultural mono-linguals like you to live, if equailty means eveyone N D world speak english, fuck that I'm not interested in DAT kind of equality. The problem is you anglo-phones have no respect for differences, you always see differences are as a bad thing, especially any difference that would require you to get off you lazy butts and make sacrifices, such as learning another language!

  • You are just a racist and hate anyone that is not like you.

  • Moi je parle Francais, et toi? Stop spreading hate and excuses to systematically eliminate another culture through your own fear. I support all cultures, French, English, Irish, Jewish, Hispanic, Chinese, Muslim, Hindu, etc. You on the other hand believe that people who speak a language deserve wrath due to your prejudice it is people like you that stops the World from unity, harmony, and peace. In Canada there are two official languages posted everywhere, except Quebec where apartheid laws rule

  • Your 2 funny, the anglo-phone culture will never be eliminated from anywhere. 2 languages R posted everywhere else N Canada, but hardly anyone outside of quebec speaks french. N fact they resist it hugely! If these rules didn't exist in quebec, French woudl ahvebeen lost along time ago! , & as Malek says this is really not as big a deal as this chick has made 2 B. PLus excuse the abreviations, it's the 500 character limit, i hope i didn't confuse you!

  • You are wrong...there are many bilingual people in Canada...If you lived here you would know that. New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba have large Bilingual populations where ALL services are Bilingual. In fact even in Alberta and BC there is a French population with access to all services in French. So please try to speak from and educated position before you start spewing BS.

  • It's nt BS i ahve been there many times I have seen many anglo-phone candiens express tehir hatred for French people . Oneof themhappensot be one of my better friends who loves to trash french people. It's not BS it's true, why don't you go to the USA and see for yourself the hatred and racism spewded out at hispanics who don't speak english. The saems exists in Canda. so it's not BS. now it's good that anda isn't as racist snd as ethnentric thatthey have these services, provided UR being honest

  • C Mr. I'm not wrong, when I say that Anglo-phone Canada for the most part is resisting learning French, even though it is a co-oficial language is infact true. You can C 4 ur self only 10% of he ppulation outside of Quebec speak French, I wonder how many of them are French canadians that moved to other providances. So Again I know my stuff. Your just uneasy about learning a new language becuase you feel thewhole world needs to speak to you in english. So knowmy infromation, you spin things!

  • You don't know anything mrshutter77 because you do not live here. Focus on your own country, where major reform is required to lift people out of poverty.

  • When you get cornered like this and you ahveno response this is what you turn to. NO I'm free to speak aobut whatever it is I feel, you anglo-phones are arrogant, and there, the Canadian center for staistics even shows it, only 10% of the population outside of quebe speak French. So I was not wrong in my assumption that infact the anglo-phones are doing there most max to resist anything and everything French.Good thing you lived there for a whilethat you learned something!

  • Your not worth talking to because you have nothing but hatred in you. Bark all you want my point is made, and you have shown your ignorance to society. I pity you, really I do.

  • Pitty yourself, you got concered in, and it must have really really hurt your pride hard to think that as a native english speakers, you can go through your life resisting learning another language and making sure everyone esle adopts themselves to you. You thought you could get away living in Quebec without learning a word of French becuase you thought you were superior. I pitty you!

  • LOL sorry but Stats are stas and according to Candadian Statistics, 60% of the popualtion in Quebec are Bi-lingual, where as in the rest of Canda, only 10%, --most of them people of Quebec who moved to other providences, and of course childen of immigrants whose parents think learnign french ins't a bad idea so they put them in french immersion programs at school. So hody dew joey like you had to be forced to learn french. Please learn to aprecaite and respect diferences!

  • Access to french services outside of Quebec is a struggle for french canadians, anywhere in Canada. The bilingual population you are talking about, are, again, french canadian. English canadians resist learning french, even when living in Quebec.

  • @Balduizm

you don't know much about english montrealers. i learned french as most people living here under 30. we did more than half our courses in french. we did history and math in french and outperformed french students who wrote tests in their mother tongue.

  • @wayfarin oui. tu as raison. C'était un commentaire généraliste et rempli d'ignorance de ma part. Mais c'était pas nécessaire de me faire sentir moins coupable en démontrant que tu es aussi ignorant que moi. :D

  • @Balduizm i'm just stating facts here, buddy.

  • It's not just a few sick individuals, its is the anglo-phone community I'd live in US & been to Canda & UK and I have seen for my very own eyes, the racism, ethnocentrism, and biggotry spwed out at people who don't speak english, anywhere. If this language police existed in Anglo-canada enforcing english you would not have any problems with it! You would think it's a good thing.

  • Oh please oh please, give me a break, if those laws never existed French language and culture woudl ahve been wiped off quebec. In anglo-phone canada no one complains about everyone must learn english. Besides in the English zone you ugys systematically discrimiante against anyone who doesn't seak english, I just like all anglo-hones you don't want to learn another language so your demanding that everyone aroudn the world learn english.

  • Oh hell. Not you again. Will you please stop your self-absorbed blathering.

  • It true and if it hard for you to hear that, I'm sorry

  • Haha. You're an idiot. As shown in this vid Quebec wants its population to speak French only. Much like Arizona wants its population to speak English only. Loooooooool. I'm glad you've finally agreed that bi-lingual education shouldn't be allowed in Arizona. Cheers! :)

  • Your talking as if Arizona population is all white and all racists and all anglo-phone that is not the case, long term plans to implment bi-lingual education for everyone there will benefit everyone. Just like how in quebec everyone at least in Montreal is Bi-lingual. I'd love to see the anglo-phones of the USA to put aside thier ethnocentrism and enrich themselves with another culture too! Once again you proved you idiocy here!

  • ROFL. You racist piece of shit. Wtf does this have to do with being white? This is a language issue. THERE IS VERY LITTLE BILINGUAL EDUCATION IN QUEBEC. Earlier school is taught in French for everyone. They even talk about it in this vid, you fool! Later on people have LANGUAGE classes where they learn English and other languages. And this isn't even in all schools. NOTHING you say will make it acceptable for students not to learn the defacto language of the US. NOTHiNG.

  • The Charter of the French Language passed in the 70's says that all children need to attend public schools in French. OR you go to an all-English speaking school if you are there temporarily or something. Bilingual education programmes are rare but sometimes available since the rest of the country is English speaking and movement occurs. Of course not the same as Hispanics who do not come from the US. Why should the US system be modelled around you? Your logic fails.

  • My logic perfectly makes sense becuase just like quebec which was historically franco-phone, Arizona and the rest of the southwest where historically hispani-phone before being robbed by the gringos. And hispanics will very soon beocme the majority in this region again, the reason bi-lingual curriculum in both ESP-ENG makes sense is becuase eventhough they will be the majority, they won't be the overwhelming majority anytime soon. HIstorically & Demographically it makes sense!

  • PLus the other Hypocritical thing baout you is that if that was the USA, you would be crying out loud and spweing your racists rhtoric about how you hate the french and they need to assimilate be gringos like yourself becuase it's a US territory and USA the language is English they need to do everything in English too! That is what you would be saying. Extremely hypocritical! like a typical US american!

  • ROFL, You are the fuckin racists. We are talking about a zone that was historically franco-phone and was later colonized by the british, even though french immigration to quebec didn't continue in mass numbers, plus franco-phones are the majority. Arizona is a hisotrically hispano-phone region that was later stolen and white washed by the gringos. So your contradicting yourself here. HIspanics are rising in number in the southwest and one day will be majority, soon very soon!

  • The other thing you anti-latin butthead, accoring to your own info there are all-english school that sutdents can attend as well. If bi-lingual education programs are rare, WTF is it that both my cousins and there children have told they studied in french and english. And you can choose sometimes. Of course th core language in most public schools is French. But they can choose to study certain subjects in English as well. Whatever it is working and producing more bi-linguals than Anglo-P canada!

  • Did you see the stats? 60% of Quebec population IS bilingual. They teach english at school and in fact if you want a job you are strongly encourage to learn it. Quebec is not against english.

  • Hello, I'm a french speaking ''Québecois'' living (and born) in Montreal. I understand that the english communities can feel ''attacked'' by bill 101; but you have to understand that for centuries (in Quebec), the french speaking majority was living in an english society. I think everything in Montreal should be bilingual, and that english speaking people in Quebec should know french basics.

  • I was born and raised in Montreal for 47 years until I had to leave the Province for work. Je parle Francais aussi, mai le loi...is biassed. I never oppressed anyone in my life, but I am victimized by unjust laws that attack me and my community. Bilingualism is important for the French Culture as well as the English Culture. The law is a division and intended to be so. My family is in poverty because of the prejedice that comes with unjust hiring practices. Unity is required not division.

  • English communities have to understand that Quebec is a french speaking province, and they have to ajust to it...

I think you are traumatized when you say bill 101 is apartheid, against human rights etc... If english communities fear for their survival in Quebec, imagine how a french society must feel in North America. Bill 101 is one of the best thing Quebec ever did for its survival...

  • Justifying the oppression of language is not a solution to saving another language. Unity is the only way to get along. Otherwise there is division, and division always leads to violence. All anyone really wants is to do their lousy jobs and live their lives with family. Family is the most important connection within a community...but when you destroy a community, you destroy the family and that is precisely the outcome of the systematic destruction of the English Community in Quebec.

  • Come on!

Are you telling me that if there is family problems in the english communities, its because of bill 101? I think family problems are more a symptom of the era we live in than a language issue...

I don't really know what you mean when you say that the law ''destroy'' your community. I think its normal that the law is biased toward french because Quebec IS french... I'm not expecting Ontario or Alberta to have french signs or menus in restaurants or even in their public services.

  • I don't expect you top know what I am talking about because you obviosly do not experience prejudice as the English Community does. That is the biggest ignorance of all. If you did experience it you would know exactly what I am talking about.

  • What I see is that you say that bill 101 brought ENORMOUS prejudice for the english commumnities (aparteid, human rights violation, extinction) but you can't explain exactly how or why... You can say anything in front of an uninformed crowd, but your accusations don't hold the road... I just remind you that english speaking quebecers represent 7.7% of the whole population... Bill 101 exist to make sure the 92.3% others can live in their mother tongue. (cauz it has not always been the case).

  • There used to be approx 1,000,000 in the English speaking community. Over the last 30 years, that has dwindled to 285,000 due to the systematic attacks on our community by separatist laws. Those that remain behind are the older generation for the most part. No English signs in Quebec Government buildings, hospitals, even our community names were squeezed out in favor of French names. The Anglo Irish have a long history in Quebec too, but we are not given any respect! Respect is a two way street.

  • Learn French! Do you think there are french signs in Ontario? Except of course in francophone communities...

  • ya actually, we're required to have French signs in the rest of Canada.

  • What aboutthe prejudice that non-englihs speakers expriene no whih which anglo-phone landtheya re in, are you forgettingthat. And as far as I can see, There is really no prejudice, you are pissedbecause you thought as an anglo-phone youc an say fuck you I'm here & yall beter speak english to me, didn't tunr out that way, so your pride is getting hurt!

  • I know that it can be hard for an unilingual english person to find a job in Quebec; this is why, at least in montreal, everyone should be bilingual. Again, it would be impossible for an unilingual french guy to find a job in Canada. I understand your call for unity, but unity start with respect of our differences. If an english guy, living in Quebec, INSIST on not learning french (and I know a couple) he has 9 other provinces to go to. Quebec is the only french society in North America.

  • Thank you! Thank you! People havebeen so curtious to the Anglo-phones ofthe world that they have become extremly arrogant, andhave developed a hubirus, they think everyone in all over the world must spea english and drop their our langauges & cultures with it. This gal int his video was indirectly mocking Qeubec for it, where as if these laws existed in anglo-phone canada she wodl have no problems with it what so ever. I liked how the Irani guy shut her up with his answer!

  • Hiring practices have pushed the Anglophones west. Even Bilingual Anglophones such as myself experienced prejudice in the hiring tactics in Quebec. That is what is in store for the remaining young Bilingual Anglophones in Quebecprejudice. And you speak as though we have some place else to go? Maybe you would change your tune if the offer was reversed. Montreal is my home. The English community will disappear in the next 20 years, which is precisely what was intended by the separatists all along

  • You know...

When I hear you guys talking, I get more and more convinced that Quebec will leave Canada enventually... To me, its not even a question of ''if'' but ''when''. Every time a Canadian politician has a chance to score points in Ontario by pissing on Quebec he does. There is a bunch of political commentators that have a trademark of ''racism'' against Quebeckers. And yet, when we're about to leave, they panic and come crying at our feets begging us to stay. This is so stupid...

  • You are right, there is bulshit on both sides.

  • You said you spent 47 years in Quebec. Are you capable of making the difference between a ''separatist'', a nationalist, and a ''québecois''. There no big difference between the tree, so when some canadians piss on ''separatist'', they piss on the whole Québec nation... Every Québecois knows why the ''separatist'' want to leave Canada, everybody agree with them, but some of us still want to believe in the Canadian federation. They do not understand yet that you guys are hopeless...

  • ??? Je comprends pas.

  • I'm pissed.

I just finish reading the newspaper seeing Harper making the argument that an alliance with the ''separatist''(the Bloc) is an pact with the devil that is going to !!destroy!! Canada etc etc etc... I'm just tired of hearing this crap all the time. (I'm not talking about you)

  • I hear you and share your frustration with that type of mentality. Harper is a real piece of SH&%. Canada was making strides for unity and this useless piece of SH&$ rekindles division amongst the people. Harper, Il est un chien salo.

I hope Quebec throws out Charest in 2 weeks And I hope the Anglophone community votes Green. They don't have anyone to vote for...the truly sad thing is that the majority in Quebec will blame things on Quebecs English community.

  • I is true that it is sad for the english speaking communities to have no party that really care about them, the liberals takes you guys for granted. For that I truly feel sympathy. I agree with you that some extremist among the french majority are anti-english, and they are a disgrace even for ''separatist''. The english speaking people in québec should have their own party, like the Bloc in Ottawa.

  • It's pretty civilized of U @ have sympathey to group of people who never have any sympathy for any other groups language under any circumstances. What you offering is Suicide 4 French culture in Quebec & more Hubris 4 French hating Anlgo-phones,PLus 65% of Quebec's population is Bi-lingual,where as the rest of Canada only 10% is Bi-lingual.I'm willing to bet most of those R Quebecois that moved 2 these other states or immigrants who took advantage of the system to learn French & English.

  • They could take a couple of ridings in Montreal, and they could hold the balance of power and promote english speaking people interest in the Assemblée Nationale. But most of all, it would give a voice to the english speaking communities, bring the anger down, and help us understand each other.

  • Oh please, there are plenty of places English speaking can go & speak English, Anlgo-phones are stomping all over this world, & no where, no where they go or even live, they want to learn another language, they want other to adopt themselves for them. This suggestion woudl only fuel the Hubris they already have, everywhre, even in non-english spekaing countries ifthey lviethier they demand to be spoken to in Eglish. This will give them openingto eventually wipe french culture out of quebec!

  • In Quebec, the english speaking communities are much too small to be a danger for the french speaking people(7.7%). Québecois count for about 23% of the population of Canada... And it is true that they are totally ignored by the political parties. I think its not good for any country to have a minority that is angry and bitter and totally isolated... That's why I say that they sould at least have a voice.

  • I must say it's pretty civilized of you & considerate, given that int his situation the anglos will not be like this at all!Good thing You brought up the fact that the biggest instigators ofthe seperatistmovement are infactthe anlgo-phoneonservative politicains who call the Quebec-bloc- seperatist just becuase they are fighting for french interests. Because many people have this perception that Canda is on the verge of being divided, which is not true, it'son inthe economic interest of Quebec!

  • So its these Québecois, those who still believe in the Canadian federation, that hold your beautiful Country in one piece. And believe me, their number is shrinking everytime we see Canadian politicians pissing on Quebec to make Ontario happy. English canadians(some), are too stupid to understand that demonizing the ''separatist'' is only making their number grow.

  • My home is Montreal, it always will be...Country is a frame of mind, I could care less now.

  • If Montreal is your home, then learn to speak French & stay in it, you obviously didn't loe your job,you got transferred somewhere else, so stop trowing out unsubstantianted acusations for give people the wrong impression. You englihs speakers, except to be catered to everywhre in this planet! That how spoiled you have become! This is a lie!

  • Good thing you brought this point up!

  • Opression of a language, giveme break, you guys are stommping all overthis world with your language and demand that everyone sepak it no matter where youa re. And if there are people that don't speak it, you spew out racist rhtoric or cry marginaiztion! Giveme break! Please, Egnlish is one languagethat wil never get opressed. PLease!

  • i'm glad they covered the aboriginal story in Canada, native canadians live in "third world" conditions in canada - i wish they had gone into the public policy part of it and the failures of canada (she failed to mention that in her home city of Toronto: 1 in 3 Toronto families live below the poverty line while Toronto's GDP is bigger than 29 U.S. states)

  • a torontonian cunt visiting montreal ...Dumb and Dumber

  • This place is a heart attack waitting to happen!!!!!

  • Great reporting AlJazeera.

  • I think it's good that the French Canadiens have fought so hard and made sure Quebec remains a French providance, becuase if this wasnot the case, French language and Culture wodl ahve been lost. This goes to shows that in someways Canada is much more multi-cultural than the USA, and being a Mosaic is better than being a Melting Pot. DGMW, problems with race do exist, but they don't come nearly as close as they do in the USA.

  • in Australia multiculturalism is working so well. i wish we could adopt assimilation like in the US.

  • I didn't know your such a xeno-phonic and felt so uncomfortable being around environments that are not english. NO I reject the ethnocice assimilation system in the USA.

  • lol im an immigrant to Australia and an asian myself. there has been race riots here in australia and they were not simply about skin color- its national indentity. u have second or even third generation arabs and lebenese that dont consider themselves australian and attacking other white australians. we had arab muslims that tried to push for bans on ham sandwich, close down pools. multiculturalism doesn't encourge assimilation!

  • Assimilation is simply fancy word for Ethnocide anyways. I know there have been race riots in Australia, Australia has a very large red neck popualtion, and as far as I have investigated, it has been the white Hoolagans who have attacks immigrant groups. If they don't want 2 eat ham sandwiches they don't want to. Multi-culturalism can work and canada has shown us a good example, the problem is to many Colonialsettlerswant everyone else to be like them. B4, it was Bing WHT,now its Acting WHT!

  • u can stop BS now have u been to Australia?? ausssies r well known worldwide for been friendliness. multiculturalism leads to balkanism because every race has their own group or society and shares nothing in common with the rest.

  • NO can U stop Ur BS? I hav neverbeen 2 Aust. But I have read alot abot it,and I ahve heard stories of many immigrants and Obiriginals, Non-anlgosaxons are considered 2nd class citizens. Especially the natives. Multiculturalism doesn't lead to balkanism, its the lack of tolerance & hatred of D differences in white poeple that get manifested 2 other groups that causes this seperatism, if whites & other groups learn 2 embrae differanes in other groups and respect it, thing woudl be better.

  • haha keep reading forget what things r like in reality

  • I willkeep reading andI will keepinforming myself, because you are boviusly watching too much TV, and like most asiasn who wantto get aepted ina white soiety your absorbing the whites racist attitudes.

  • too much TV?? i live and breath in the society u r reading about!!

  • Too many people in the USA or where I livein Venezuela also live and breath the societies they lvie in yet they have no clue what is going on.

  • Assimilation is a fancy world for ethnocide and white washing of people around the world. Kindof like what happened to the natie hawains,or even native australians. To this day white australians do not consider non-white australains as eally ebing australians.

  • Don't forget in the end UR free to onsider yourself whom ever you want. Your an asian imirant that has deided to be Australian based what you see as being an Australian, fine! If Lebonese don'tconsiderthemslves Australains based onan ide thatthey havebaoutbeingan australain, that's fine, they have that right! I lived in US for many years yet I dont consider myself a USian at all.

  • No matter what the topic, people just love to take swipes at the USA. I have to wonder if the USA is the standard and envy by which all are measured.

Anyway, the USA I know is not as simple as your statement about it. Like all of life, the truth is always more complex and nuanced.

  • It is true, whites in the USA realy do spew out racism, ethnocentrism and hatred towards non-gnlisyh speaking latinos. Yet if they go aboradthey expect everyone to speak english to them. Evenif they are livng there, they want to be spoken to in English. As far as people taking swuped at the USA goes, I can't blame them, as long as white remain the majority, that country will have too muh racism, bigotry and problems!

  • While it is historically true about white racism in the USA, and it is also true that there is a core of people in the USA who cling to those backward views, it is overly simplistic and dishonest to boil down the whole of American society based on that. The USA is is a very large, diverse, and unique country...and more people still emigrate to here than any country on earth.

I see you are Venezuela. Like other Latin American countries, it also has a history of racism and discrimination too.

  • In venezuela, there is racism and discrimination, but at least I'm honest baout it, your not, you like to down play the fact that racism even exists ir that it's only a few indiviuduals or people. And as for Diversity: I know it's big sales pich to sell brand USA but you don't embrace it t much, you want th whole world to be like yours, and the very fact that you belive in American exceptionalism shows you still have a backward mentality too! Venezuela is more democratic than the USA!

  • Another thing, Immigration is a global phenomenon, just just something the USA deals with. Racism and discrimination in Venezuela don't come anywher enar what exists in the USA, their is lots of classism. BUt the USA is not different in that.

  • Actually the USA is one of the most open countries in displaying and dealing with its racism. Most Latin American countries sweep it under the rug and don't deal with it. And that is the reason why the class structure in Latin America follows a racial line: the ruling elite and upper middle class are white; there is a small middle class made up of European immigrants and some from mix ancestry; and the working class the poor are made up mostly of brown skin, black and native peoples.

  • And because class lines are much more regid in Latin America, there are only a few exceptions where someone who isn't white either runs a country or is part of the oligarchy that really runs the country.

That is institutionalized racism. And Latin American is no stranger to that.

  • Well, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicagragua, Panama, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Guyana, Sruiman, all have head of state whom either come from working class poor class backgrounds, people of color, indegenous or meztiso, and or are women. Institutionlized racism is much stronger in the USA than latin america, we do have insittutionlized classim, btu that is changing with new waves leftist gov'ts. In the USA presedency is only for the previlidged class!

  • And the ones who call the shots in all those places are ruling elite. The vast majority of them are of pure European heritage. They are the 5% of the population who own or control 80-90% of those countries' wealth and means of production. They are the ones who are the generals in the military. They are the ones who put most of their money in US and European banks and who who have been educated in the top American and European university.

Whatever you want to call it, LA is still ruled by therich

  • Not anymore, the tide is changing & changing faster ther than it is in the USA, which is why the US is so eager to lock the whole region down with FTAA. The United States is ruled by the rich, like before and it will continue to be ruled by rich people. And the USA is not the standard and envy of anywhere, I was simply telling another person I don't consider mysefl a USian, period! The tide is changing in LA, when will teh tide change in the USA?--WIth Obama it looks like business as usual!

  • Not anymore? Tell me where in Latin America, besides Cuba, where there is economic equality. And tell me where in Latin America is there a large, dynamic and influential middle class who own property and who are fully employed.

Latin America still has a poverty rate of 35% - that is people living on a few dollars a day.

The USA is far from perfect and the rich always have run things. But one thing is true: there is more class mobility in the USA than in LA. And the wealth in LA is in fewerhands

  • The USA has apoverty rate of 35% too! Lots of people living on less than $20 a day.U R obvously deaf on ears n issues outside of USA like most USians, Venezuela is shifting wealth, So is Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Ecudaor, Brazil, Argentina, Panama, Nicaragua, & now even Guatemala & Honduras with the elction fo progressive gov'ts. Classmobility in the US is a myth, there more class Mobility in LA nation with progressive Gov'ts than the USA. Infact there is lots of downward mobility now!

  • There was always lots of class Mobility in Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and Brazil. There was alot of Oligarchy, but that's changing UR obviously not aware of progressive waves taking over Latin America & why Republian & Democrats like you are so eager to overthrow these progressive gov'ts to set you imperial agenda down.U R what you acuse of others,so if you acuse my country of being weak & incompetent it's probably beause URs is, KATRINA was a classic example!

  • Since 2004 my country has been providing low-income people in UR country N D Northeastern seaboard, mostly people of color but also working class whites with discounted heating Oil programs so your poor families can make it through the winters.U can't even provide than to UR poor people & U call my country weak & incompetent,Look @ Katrina,My contry was ready to helps URS, & we do a much better job at elevating the poor under D current gov't we have than you do with your Demuplican gov't!-

  • That was a pr move by your generalissmo presidente. In the meantime, he has failed to tend to his own garden at home. Having a country that is over 33% in poverty is really not a good thing. And it has a crime and murder rate that is tops in the world.

I think you might want to go point your fingers those matters at some other countries in your same class.

  • U keep proving justt How much US Americans R stupid! It wasn't a PR move, UR gov't was & still is neglecting the growing # of poor people in your country, our president throught CITGO stepped in to help those families till now make it through winters since 1994.Plus our president isn't a general, the highest ranking he had was commander,He has held 13 elections, winning 12 & losing 1, which one of your Democratic Heroes can claim that.Plus, poverty was 80% & now it's 33%, quiet An acomplishment

  • B$ under pro-USA regimes it was 80%, now it's 33%, much work needs tobe dne, but poverty in d US is 33% & its a treu disgrace. Much work neds tobe done in our country about crime & murder, but those thing still R thehighest in the so-called industralised wrold in UR country. Plus my country is in a much higher class than your, given that we treatthe poor with much more dignity that you do!So there much weakness & inompetence that needs to be worked out in the USA, which your too blind to see!

  • Please tell me where you got that figure from? 33% that is.

And no, the USA is nowhere near your crime rate or homicide rate. Please go pass that lie off to someone who does not know any better.

And I would bet that even Venezuela's official poverty numbers are higher than 33% in reality.

Please compare your country to similar developing countries like Columbia, Bolivia, Mexico, or South Africa.

  • If you mesure poverty the wayit was measured int he 1950s & 60s-as your presidential candidate Ralph Nader has done, you see that 100 million people are poor in the U.S.Which makes sense, Housing is out of reach, so is health-dental- & vision care, at this point poverty rate in venezuela is 33%, which quite anaccomplishment from 80% in 1998, yet I'mnot happy, much work need to be done!& Much more work needs otbe done in US,Us is ruled by Monied eleites & that must stop for real change to occur!

  • Ah & crime rate & Homicide rate are the Highest in among "Developed" nations! BUt like I said we do have our own problem with crime & homicide & if our president doesn't do something quickly his popularity might drop! But what I mentioend are fundamental changed that need to take place in the US for it tobe a real democracy! Hell NAFTA & CAFTA passed without reffurendums-at the objection of many Labor activists & citizens, Polls showed most people opposed it.

  • I am not sure if you even know what democracy is. Venezuela surely has never consistently experienced it and it surely isn't one know. It is caught up in the cult of personality and ego of Hugo Chavez. The simple fact is that a nation's development and stability cannot hinge on the actions and personality of one man. The institutions and traditions must are supposed to be bigger than any individual.

Bottom line is we have had over 220 years of relative stability. Yours has not.

  • Yes I do Democracy is Gov't ruled by the people, which the US is not,we have always experienced democracy along with a smal period of military dictatorship which was US bakced & you style of PLutocracy, but we are a democracy once again, you expose your typical USian sutpidity, were not cuaghtup in the cult of Hugo Chavez, the US caughtup in the cult of Barack Obama. We have many democratic insitutions, & the 220 years of relative stability have only existed for your upper classes!

  • Ask Hispanics in Florida, The Southwest 7 Puerto rico if they had 220 years of relative stability, Ask Blacks if they had 220 years of it, Ask Cajuns & Creoles, Ask First Nation Peoples if they had 220 years of realtive stability, Ask you working class non-land owning working class White Population if they had 220 years of realtive stability? NO to all of them, Working Class population is faster growing, Professionals & Rich are growing, But Middle class isn't even Majority anyone the US!

  • And why do those people still come here and stay in the U.S.? Because they do see and experience, even with all its flaws, as a place of opportunity, relative peace, free from the internal strife of military coups and dictatorships, where social classes are written and set in stone as in most countries; it is a place where people may have to work hard just to keep their heads above water, but at least they can feed themselves and their families. Not a perfect country but better than most.

  • Plus many of them have false images of whatteh UNited States is all about becuase ofthe false images they seebaout the united States in the Movies & TV shows, and the folk tales from the 1950s that it's place that the streets are painted with gold run through them, so they bu7rn their life at home and come to the US only to get hit to wall & have nothing to return to.PLus as INside USA:State of US agriculture shows many of todays immigrants are product of the Free Trade deals like NAFTA

  • NAFTA has depressed mexico & Central America & deprived people of their livelhoods so theyrun to the closes country w/a hard currency to survive.
