I agree with you on the DN issue. Even though Near was awesome and Mello was kinda cool, there was just something magical about having L in the room.
However, Near and Mello prove how amazing L truly was. He had the foresight to put up a backup plan in case he died so that someone smarter or craftier than even he could take over.

I'm sure other people think that way too, even some of the ones that love Mello or Near.
If not, we'll MAKE them feel that way lol
