I too was so fortunate to hear Richard Kiley when "Man of La Mancha" was in Boston so many years ago. I never tire of hearing his versions of these songs. No one sings them like he did.
I feel so fortunate to have seen Richard Kiley in the original Broadway production. The man could sing beautifully but he was also a consummate actor. The combination was unbeatable. His voice in this show as well as in KISMET -- extraordinary.
I have been blessed enough to see and hear the most wonderful voices on Broadway and the London stage - Michael Crawford, Colm Wilkinson, Michael Ball, Tom Wopat, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Robert Goulet, etc, etc., but there is one voice which stands out above them all - Richard Kiley's. No one was even in his league or could raise goose pimples on your body like Richard Kiley. I wish he was still around to entertain everyone with that glorious voice of his.
O'Toole did the job alright I think...but for me listening to Richard Kiley singing the songs of this tragic musical ruined me for thinking of anyone else playing the part of Don Quixote.
Awesome performance ! I was also lucky to see Richard Kiley perform this song in the play on Broadway. It was my first Broadway play and perhaps the best one I have ever seen, still. What a talent Richard Kiley was and we still are enjoying his performances in our minds and on YouTube !!
Stunningly beautiful. I was lucky to have seen Richard Kiley in The Man of La Mancha, back in the 70's. I will never forget it. The spectacle and power of the dancing 'horses!' Wow! Any fan knows that scene. :)~ I can merely tolerate the Peter O'Toole version, because it is the only complete telling of the story that we can actually see, sad version that it is! It is still a wonderful story.
@batman4oz "I can merely tolerate the Peter O'Toole version ... sad version that it is!" No, it's not, it's just different. Try to read the book in spanish and say that it's a sad version, too, for that matter.
I remember very well the TV advertising for this play back in the 70's when I was a kid. They ran those ads so much that to this day I still remember the songs those ads featured, such as this one. Thanks for posting!

Richard Kiley - What a great voice. Just the best in this role, in my opinion.
Loved him in non-musical TV and movie roles, too. Very good actor.
