@TXRog: I don't know; I think we need Westerns as good as this one more than ever. This one will always be in my Top Ten. Even before the first scene and the credits were rolling and the score playing in the theater 50 years ago, I knew I would always love it.
A great song that I never forget it. It leads me to remember Malboro song too I learned the advertment of Malboro song when I got into a dark cinema when I was young.
Man.....I remember watching this movie as a kid and couldn't wait to confronting some neighborhood bullies. When i had the chance. this music played in my head. unfortunitally I got my ass beat, but hey still a great song.
Simply one of the greatest Westerns ever made - I will go one better and say one of the greatest films ever made. The music is (no pun intended) "magnificent."
Westerns are timeless and this move is really no more than a morality play - good vs. evil and men who answered the call, confronted it and won.
@marsbreakfast. You might want to check out soundtracks to Il Postino (The Postman), Cinema Paradiso and Once Upon A Time in America. I was a huge Copland fan for 30 years before I discovered great soundtrack scores from European movies. But, yes, Elmer Bernstein ranks very high. James Horner too.
@akvarog Thanks for a great post. Everytime I hear the music, I "see" the mov\e in my minds eye.And we're going back decades since I saw it as a youngster.
@the44118 Glad to hear that another listener is hooked on the theme. If you like dramas, westerns then u may jst like this movie. If you get a chance 2 see it, might I suggest seeing it on video as opposed 2 t.v. w/commeercials interruptions. Personally I'm hard pressed to rate the music of Star Wars and Magificent 7 as 2 which is nb r 1. But maybe becasue I had seen "7" and heard the music as a youngster at the theatre and later years saw "S.W's" that I am on the fence. Have a gr8 day..
When I hear this I see in my mind a sweeping Western horizon filled with mesas, mountains and a blue sky dappled with big, fluffy clouds....and seven men on horses riding towards me.
This is one of the best renditions of the Magnificent Seven theme ever. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra did a fantastic job. Every piece in the orchestra yanks at you and truly makes you feel the magnificence of the wild, wild West. When you think of the American Cowboy, this is the theme that accompanies him and this edition of the theme is what you hear in your mind. Kudos to the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra!
@dvary89 Hell yes you would. I think it was the last time it was perfectly cool to show every feeling you had at the top of your lungs. Even if your lungs were rotted out with Marlboros.
Bernstein is the greatest composer of the 20th Century, but it's a very close field with Copeland coming in a very tight second. And for the record, this is terrific movie, but I like the preceding 7 Samurai by Kurosawa better.
one of the great fantasy movies of all time. you pick your hero, and that becomes your identifcation. darn those critics for panning this movie. uneven? hardly! I think they just want to make a name for themselves. I did notice there was a liberal bias. but, its a free country. bias is totally legal.
@LGTheOneFreeMan: Wow... I never thought about it until I read your comment, but this would be a PERFECT tune for a marching band. It would sound great. Damn, I wish our instructor had thought to put that on our playlist back when I was in my high school's marching band 30 years ago!
Can we all agree too that TMS had one of the great ensemble casts in the history of Hollywood cinema? And guys like Bronson, McQueen, Buchholz and Coburn were just starting out. I think it would almost be safe to say that it's the Western for those who think they would not like Westerns.
The best orchestral (non-soundtrack) version of TMS I've ever heard. My wife and I met Erich Kunzel after an All-Gershwin concert performed by the Cincinnati Pops in the '80s. He was impressed we had driven 700 miles from Wisconsin just to hear the Pops and watch him conduct. He was a wonderful man.
We're playing this in my orchestra at the minute and it's absolutly exhillerating to play! Bernstien is one of the all time ledgendary composers and made his score's a privilage to play !
Damn right and one of my favorite composers. Do you think this movie is the best American remake to a foreign language movie? it follows under rule 4 and 8 of my 8 rules when doing a remake, rule 4 is "The remake can bring something new while respecting the original" and 8 is "It's ok to remake a foreign film sometimes". This version of Seven Samurai did something new and did something fresh to the source in story and execution and respected the original
do you believe it's better to remake movies that weren't terribly well known, unloved or obscure instead of well known or recongizable movies or classics? let there be a special place reserved in hell for that person who tries to get a Casablanca remake produced for some movies are off limits.
@centuriontaxi a remake would be a horrible idea. this film is perfection! remakes are just lazy filmmaking and a way to bastardize and spit on the legacy of someone else's work. not to mention, technically this is already a remake, so why remake a remake?
This movie is a remake did you know that? It's a western version based on Akira Kurasowa's Japanese classic "Seven Samurai", ever seen that movie? Magnificent Seven is an Americanized version but set in the western age instead of the Shogun age.
@Johnlindsey289 i wouldn't call it a remake as much as it is a re-envisioning. i define a remake as taking a classic movie and bastardizing everything about just because the writer/director/producer can't come up with their own idea. Some examples...Clash of the Titans, Karate Kid, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th...and the absolute worst one of all....The Day the Earth Stood Still!!!!
Psycho was the worst one, a unwanted and un-needed remake of a cinematic masterpiece. It was shot-to-shot, frame-by-frame with same dialouge (which sounds outdated for 1998 when it was suppose to be in 1998) and situations that feel award for 1998.
Do you believe it's ok to remake films that were obscure, not terribly well known or unloved? some of your fave movies could be remakes did you know that? Scarface is an example
@Johnlindsey289 i'm just never going to like remakes. i find them to be an insult to the original. however, if something like dr. goldfoot and the bikini machine (obscure old vincent price movie that no one knows about, but fits your example) were to be remade, i don't think that would be a bad idea, but it would have to be done right and not spit on the legacy (or lack thereof) of the original
Some of your fave movies could be remakes without even knowing. What do you think of The Departed, Scarface, The Thing, True Lies, Let Me In, Ben-Hur, Maltese Falcon, The Fly, Dawn of the Dead, Ten Commandments, Man Who Knew too Much, Scent of a Woman etc.? all excellent remakes
What do you think of The Thing or The Fly remakes? so much better than their hokey 50's b-movie counterparts and Carpenter grew up with the original Thing since he was a kid, the 50's Thing from Another World didn't have the time or technology to do the original idea justice back then and the 80's counterpart was better due to better technology and faithful to the original source
@NSUDemonchipmunk On a very VERY Rare occasion (1 out of 1000) a remake is better than the original. The Hills Have Eyes springs to mind. But it is an extreme rarity. I hope to God Hollywood never tries to remake The Magnificent Seven
@karlmoles65 Today's Hollywood would remake it with a chic leading a bunch of fems or dumb thuggish mercenaries who couldn't make it without a female leader. Go figure.
@freeheretic111 Yul Brynner replaced by George Gooney, Steve McQueen replaced by Brat Spitt, James Coburn replaced by Charlie Sheen, Charles Bronson replaced by Richard Simmons, and the other three replaced by cast of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. And of course Eli Wallach replaced by the white haired guy from Project Runway. Now that would be a major "wow factor."
@MysterySparkStudios might want to take your enemies instead, most of you are likely to die in huge shoot out with about 1,000 mexican dudes, although one or two of you will probably get to ride of into the sunset.
Now we suffer from the passing of two giants in the music world Erich Kunzel and Elmer Bernstein. This version of Elmer's score is by far the most popular and takes full advantage of the entire orchestra. It's a marvelous piece and one of my all time favorites. If I had a thousand dollars for every time I have listened to it and marveled I'd be as rich as Bill Gates! Thanks for the posting! RIP Erich and Elmer your work will never be forgotten or equaled.
@WitheredxAway To me this is one of two ultimate western soundtracks. The movie itself wasn't so great. Even in the opening credits the producers cite a Japanese movie; "The 7 Samurai". BUT oh the soundtrack
@delbard1 Magnificient Seven wasn't that great?? Well you believe that because you obviously have no taste in movies. I believe you should find something that you have a knack for and then you can comment intelligently. How about comics or soap operas?, give those a try but leave the movie critiques to those who can appreciate good cinema....O K ???
@jeffsor47 I think the 3 movies that Clint Eastwood did "The man w/ no name". were better. I have my opinion, you have yours. On a letter grade, I would give it a B-.
This is from an age where, when you sat in the dark with your popcorn, all the dreams you have and th epossibilities of the world were imminent. Let that never be murdered from the cinema experience. It is a gloriously human experience!
Elmer Bernstein was a great composer of film score music. The soundtracks for "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Great Escape" are two of my favorites. It should be noted that there are some definite similarities between some of the music of "The Magnificent Seven" and Tchaikovsky's "Capriccio Italiano, Op. 45".
@ZariyaShouler Thanks, Zariya, although I'm sure there have been many nice things said in reply to your videos. Oh, and best of luck on your A Levels!
I went to see Elmer Bernstein himself conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra play this at the Royal Albert Hall. It was so stunning I thought I was going to pass out.
@TXRog: I don't know; I think we need Westerns as good as this one more than ever. This one will always be in my Top Ten. Even before the first scene and the credits were rolling and the score playing in the theater 50 years ago, I knew I would always love it.

@Johnlindsey289 Found another Carpenter fan, excellent!

@NSUDemonchipmunk On a very VERY Rare occasion (1 out of 1000) a remake is better than the original. The Hills Have Eyes springs to mind. But it is an extreme rarity. I hope to God Hollywood never tries to remake The Magnificent Seven
karlmoles65 6 months ago

BUT oh the soundtrack
delbard1 9 months ago
@delbard1 Magnificient Seven wasn't that great?? Well you believe that because you obviously have no taste in movies. I believe you should find something that you have a knack for and then you can comment intelligently. How about comics or soap operas?, give those a try but leave the movie critiques to those who can appreciate good cinema....O K ???
jeffsor47 9 months ago

MilMus6889 10 months ago
@MilMus6889 Yep! It is also somewhat similar to Bernstein's Great Escape Theme! But totally brilliant in both cases.

I went to see Elmer Bernstein himself conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra play this at the Royal Albert Hall. It was so stunning I thought I was going to pass out.
