You have to pick a Volacloid when you open up the program. c:

MikuMikuDance comes with Haku, Kaito, Rin, Len, Meiko, Neru and 2 versions of Miku. Other vocaloids can be either downloaded or created by yourself.

I haven't used MMD ever since I made this video, and I can't open it anymore, so I'm not sure.. You should watch some tutorials on youtube, they will definitely tell you how to switch characters. [: That's how I learned it.
