I have to say I agree. They are possibly my have band and this is always a spiritual moment in their live shows. I really couldn't believe that i was there in the truck. Thanks for the note my friend.
I experienced this live on NBC and have probably watched it well over 300 times. It's my go-to. Favorite version of my favorite song. It has put me through a lot in life, and I'm glad I'm able to thank you directly for capturing that moment so brilliantly - I never thought I'd be able to do that.

Hammish, I myself am a live camera operator and in fact just worked with Bruce Green whom I think you are familiar with. Are you saying Rod is a vision mixer cause this is your terminology for "TD" or is there someone else punching the show? Also, is he calling camera takes? How do the operators know when they are about to go live? I understand shooting for Iso's but if I am not mistaken, this was actually live correct? Is Rod infact punching and calling cameras?
Hey Fowowns. Hayley is calling the musical breakdown, rod is not a TD he is a vision mixer. We have been a team for 20years. We spend hours talking about each track - the shots and the cuts. The American style is to call every shot or roll - that's one way of doing it but not the only way. The truck is the final piece in a huge jigsaw.
@hamishhamiltontv We've just had a Music Script Supervisor called Joy Monks (know her? Ex-BBC now freelance) in to do a guest lecture/studio session with our third year TV Prod students at UCLAN in Preston, and a lot of the students wanted to maybe go down the music production route after doing it. I gave the lecturer your channel details though so the students can see how it's done live :)
I don't actually hear anyone saying "ready camera _, take camera _ etc." Is someone else saying this or is the Technical Director on his own in terms of when to take individual cameras, or is the TD working off a preset sequence? Also what is the significance of the numbers that lady is saying?
Glad you liked it johnnyafairbank ! Don is indeed directing and co-producing the show this year. He will do an amazing job - he is a fantastic director, a gentleman and crucially will also be a co-producer. It may be worth noting that the show was nominated for more Emmys than any Oscars ceremony ever so some people did like it. Enjoy this years show's - your obviously glad its not me ! I can send you a DVD of last years if you wish. Respect Hamish
Sorry to say this, but Hamish Hamilton was the WORST ACADEMY AWARDS DIRECTOR EVER after last year!!! The execution was such a mess, especially with "And the winner is..." replacing "And the Oscar goes to", and although I taped it I won't even bother dubbing it to DVD. I guess Louis J. Horvitz and Glenn Weiss were too busy, which is why they tapped Hamish instead.
Thankfully, Don Mischer will be directing and co-producing this year's Oscarcast.
This is a great video and gives a lot of insight of how things work on a control room, but.......
PLEASE, next time turn on a wide camera showing the whole room/arena/stadium/whatever during the highest point of any U2 shoo: the Street's FLASH. A Bono close-up during the flash is a FAIL; a wide angle showing the whole venue lit up is an EPIC WIN.
@TheBAGGEN Its really tough. i was really lucky - i got in as a trainee at the BBC in Scotland. A lot of people start of on tours directing concert screens.
Thanks for posting. This view and this moment has always been one of my favorites in U2 history - and one of the great moments in music...I often play the DVD to feel inspired. peace...

@goldenthesarge agreed, my mum could cover a band with 14 cameras! Do it with 3 cameras and I'd be impressed.
Also verbally 'high fiving' the crew isn't really directing.
