Considering Italy is the founder of modern Europe, and for about three hundred years Italian was the language of learning, study, politics and diplomacy; it is very very sad that people still like to treat Italians like third rate citizens.

@osatmq You have to remember, Germans were extremely racist people, the Government included. They set policies targeting Italians for their perhaps liberal behaviour in public. So like the Swiss, the Germans instituted race laws. Interestingly though, it was the Italians that educated most Europeans through out the centuries in all areas of learning, technology too. I hate to say this: Germans are very racist people even today. Not all of them but it is in their blood. Fact.

Italians didn't found modern Europe, sorry, many different cultures did, including Greeks (Greek had a great influence on Rome, democracy and philosophy), Anglo-Saxons (look at the influence of English in modern Europe, it is almost the lingua franca, and many Anglo-Saxon laws were adopted by others).

Italian was never the language of learning, study, politics and diplomacy. Latin was some of those things, though. French has been the language of politics and diplomacy for most decades.

Italian history is not as simple as it appears to be. It is very complicated, long, troubled and abounds with energy and influence, all over Europe.

And, yes, Italy has influence modern Europe, but not more than some countries such as France or even the UK. Italy had more of an impact in the Classical Era and then the Late Medieval and Early ModernEra (though France had a bigger impact...admittedly France was influenced by Rome).

Clarification,the only things Greeks and Italians have in common is synatctic structure of language. They are two linguistically distinct languages. The Spaniards, French, Provencal, Portugese and Romansch are all lingusitically derivative of latin. Italians and Greeks are like apples and oranges. Italian food is akin to Spanish and (French Unfortunately for the Italians). Latin equates with Latins, not Greek. Greeks have more in common with the Turks. The word wog is still racist and an insult.
