@kaypeejayy27 NO..An opera is a theatrical production where the music is the most important, like a musical, but unlike musicals, operas are sung in classical style and are usually performed without amplification relying on the singer's ability to project the sound and theater's acoustics. A solo in opera is called "aria", there are also duets, trios, etc. choruses in opera.too. As to the first selection, it's also called "toreodor's song" from opera Carmen.
@AARONVEN727 I don't think people are trying to show off. The public has been so misinformed about opera that they have no idea what it really is. The public now believes that anything sung in a foreign language is opera. When you have an apple right in front of you and people keep calling it an orange, it becomes annoying,
Aaghhh! Stop attacking each other and trying to show off your knowledge. They're all beautiful singing and music. It is supposed to elevate & relax us, not make us more arrogant and contentious.
I just love this. I love this music. Its so beautiful and powerful... Funny, how I discovered it :D I finished 2 weeks ago Portal 2 and part of ending was about minute long opera song. I fell in love with it. Even if it was 1 min long, I listened to it for hours... I guess there was need for opera music hidden inside me waiting to be discovered...
All Opera's can be catagorized as musicals as well. So, I disagree with your Phantom Of The Opera comment on how it is not Opera. It has the same formula as all other operas, opera singers and operatic compositions. It is just in English, which is rare. I think you have turned a blind eye to the peice. I'm not meaning this in a bad way, just sharing my disagreement. I just got back from Las Vegas Phantom Of The Opera show. Trust me, it is an Opera.
@MrJro2 It doesn't work that way. Operas are NOT musicals and musicals are NOT opera. Phantom of the opera doesn't use "opera singers" and "operatic compositions." Hint: Sarah Brightman isn't an opera singer. Opera in English is NOT rare. There are quite a few operas in English. Opera is not amplified, unlike musicals. Phantom of the Opera has spoken dialogue, which doesn't occur in opera. Operas are still being written, but Phantom isn't one of them.
@goldenthroat86 I can appreciate your stance on this subject. I disagree. all your points lead to the conclusion of you can't do this or it isn't opera. It's like saying it's not rock n roll if you have a violin in the song. NOT true! Listening to the music, what genre would you put it in? It's a combination of Opera and musical. I do understand where you are coming from and respect your opinion on the matter, but if I was to catagorize this peice in a music store it would be Opera/musical.
@MrJro2 Phantom of the Opera is NOT performed in opera houses. It's written for musical theater voices not operatic voices. Operatic voices will sound very strange and out-of-place in Phantom. There isn't a single classical musician or opera fan who'd call Phantom an opera. Additionally, Andrew Lloyd Webber classified it as a musical. Additionally neither Ode To Joy nor O sole mio have anything to do with opera.
@MrJro2 Of course you have a right to your opinion, all opinions are to be respected. But I have a few questions? Are you an opera fan? If not, have you been to opera? How well do you know opera? Just curious. BTW - if you called Phantom a "pop opera" , I wouldn't argue. But you can't seriously compare Webber to Mozart or Puccini (oh wait, did you have a chance to listen to this: /watch?v=q-CtnLDcnjU -- pay attention at around 0:40). Maybe this qualifies it as combination.
@jewelmarkess I am an Opera fan. And i can concede to the "pop opera" catagory. Phantom, yes more on the musical side, it does have an opera influence at very apparent times throughout the show. I like that "pop opera"!!! I absolutely love Puccini!
@MrJro2 There is no such thing as combination of opera or musical. There is a genre called "operetta" which is in-between opera and musical i.e. musicals but sung in classical style. There are also some musicals like.Candide could be classified as either opera or musical depending on the singers and venue, but Phantom isn't one of them. Phantom doesn't work with operatic style of singing. Phantom's only connection to opera is that the theme song is stolen from Puccini.
There is no need to figure out why you like opera based on how you dress. If you dress punk, it does not mean you must only like punk. To be wanting punk music at all times is a waste of the ever expanding genres of music and its messages... Don't be afraid to like something.

Some people want white females to mix with non-white males.
I made a one-minute video highlighting a very tiny sample of race-mixing advertisements.
I love white people, and I am opposed to race-mixing. But I do not hate non-whites.
If you click on my name “autumntree2011” highlighted in blue below this comment, you can watch my video.

No doubt Phantom of the Opera was included in this list because Andrew Lloyd Webber STOLE much of the music from Opera... particularly Puccini!!!!!!

Parts of Ode to Joy is opera so it still counts as Opera, and would anyone please tell me whats the first opera song called.
kaypeejayy27 7 months ago
@kaypeejayy27 It doesn't work that way. Ode to joy is part of a symphony. If it doesn't come from an opera, it isn't opera. Get it now?
