Does anyone know what that little gadget is that Ed O'Brien is using to make those ambient sounds? I'm sure he's using pedals as well but what's that thing with the blue LED that he's floating over his strings?

It's called an "EBow". It creates an electromagnetic field, which produces a sound reminiscent of using a bow on the guitar strings.
