@69adrummer It's called a Thumb Roll, all you need to do is spin it hard enough, which actually isn't that much pressure. All it takes is practice to find the right velocity you need to generate. Once you get it it's pretty easy.

The ring is actually a good thing. You cant hear it from far away but having that ring makes the snare volume project more. And it just depends on how you tune your Evans head. they can sound pretty badass. Ex: his snare

@InfernoX1994 thats because its a different class. The way they classify it now is world class and open class. (obviously other divisions) but those are the main ones. The Open Class corps aren't as restricted as the world class which has more limits. A DCA corps by me is all ages 16 and up, i know that doesnt have anything to do with an 8 year old but i guess if they're good enough

The C corps kids a around 8 and even younger, they are not really a competitive corps their main goal is to have fun and get them ready to move up to the B corps and eventually the A corps if they decide to stay with it.

@RayezProductions Transcription and the ability to play the lick are two completely different abilities, mainly because ears and hands are two very different appendages one of which gets better with drumming and the other gets worse so perhaps the better question is ask them to play the lick. rather than asking them to transcribe it.
