I had to laugh with you at your comment about when the film isn't working you start to get warapped up in the fashion.
I know a film IS working when I don't get distracted by being in the theater. I know that it ISN"T working when I start watching the audience and looking at the design of the auditorium. This is usually followed by thinking, "I have so many things I COULD be doing right now. *sigh*"
Thanks for the great review- glad I skipped this one.
I think you're taking the film a bit too literally; the message isn't 'go be in robert redford's political science class' or 'die standing up fighting terrorists'; it's a call to action for people my age who are really intelligent and because of that have become disenfranchised with the world. It was made for the generation that's going to be coming into power soon, and it's basically Robert Redford going 'we screwed the world up, it's time for you to buckle up, take charge, and fix it'.
Brilliant! Love to hear such honest, unabashed opinions -- and from Mr Semple who worked with Redford, no less. Witty, entertaining, and interesting. Please keep the reviews coming!
Great review. I love listening to your conversation about the film. However, the editing is too jumpy and chops up the conversation. Didn't hear enough from the woman reviewer. Is she wearing a Members Only jacket?? I didn't quite get exactly why you don't like the film. Is it because it's a message film? Written poorly? Hard to tell as the editing jumped around too much. Thanks!
Not for nothing, but is this a review or a half-witted incongruous summary, for 2 people with so much experience in the film industry you dont have a clue as to how to review a movie...geez
I liked the message in the movie about a sort of peace corp in America. The rest was hogwash. I agree with you geezers. Thanks for making me laugh today while writing the news. - Nick, ABC23
Thank you for that bomb of a review. I hate the arrogance of Hollywood and of actors in general. Thanks for kicking their arrogant asses with this bad review.
It's hilarious. I'm a copy editor for my college paper, and TWO student writers each wrote their own glowing reviews of "Lions for Lambs." I just knew they had to be wrong.
Loved the review - especially the part about how Robert Redford probably does his own plastic surgery, too - Redford is up there with Michael Jackson & Sylvester Stallone when it come to looking "Artificial". Redford's head looks like a spotty white raisen with a wig.
Where is the wisdom that an 80 year old should have? He's been through WWII, Korean War, Viet Nam War, Cold War, and two mideast wars, but he talks about a loud shirt?
Thank you my friends, for sticking a pin into another of Hollywood's pompous "message" films that are always bad, manipulative, and superficial, and that almost always find a way to criticise those who disagree with the political left.
My mom, who is in the same octogenarian camp as you, also saw this film and told me it was great. She is mostly deaf and told me she was so surprised that she could actually hear the film in the movie theater because usually she can't. After watching your review though, my bet is that she only thinks she heard it, but didn't really! She's sill smart and pretty hip
so I can't imagine that she'd think it was so good if you thought it was so bad!
This film was on my maybe list, but since I trust your reviews, it's been bumped off. I'm glad you brought up the fact that movie stars often think we know nothing, and their "important" films are our first exposure to such subject...Hollywood arrogance and elitism at its best!
My mom saw this film and didn't care for it, saying it was just anti-war propaganda...but i haven't seen it...as for the war, it may not have been the worst thing removing Saddam Hussein from power, but the guy they really need to find is Bin Laden, no? anywayz, great review! Have you two seen The Game Plan? or do you only look at more mature films (although that one is pretty good :D)? Look forward to your next review!
These guys know what they're talking about. I disagree a little. I think Robert Redford has something to say and there's nothing wrong with that. He's entitled to say whatever he wants, it's a free country. I think he says it better than anything else. It's not cinematically the best film, but it's an interesting film.
My bad, deleted my last post.

What really sucks is I've always been a big fan of Mr. Redford.
I hate to see him leaning so far to the pacifist/philisophical-do-nothing side.
Perhaps these reviews and lack of box-office will persuade him to rethink his philosophy.

The movie had to jump from story to story and back again to try to keep your interest. I was nice to see the male lead from Pieces of April again.
