  • @jensmusicfaves Yeah....

  • I still watch Mystery! on PBS and I'm so sad they did away with the opening :-(

  • @rebahsol Same! All their intros have been shortened and bastardized. Sad. :(

  • @jensmusicfaves lol, i remember the same feeling

  • I remember this from when I was a kid! I always loved the creepiness of it, even then.

  • Who plays croquet in a raging downpour of rain? =P

  • I was terrified of this when I was a kid... therefore, I watched it everytime it was on, lol.

  • I remember this opening well from when I was a kid. For some reason it always scared me.

  • I definately love this. Also the Arthur TV series spoofed this heavily in the episode Binky Rules/Meet Binky.

  • This opening always scared the shit out of me as a little kid!

  • woah, did everybody like the opening as a kid?! i remember sitting in my living room couch (which means it was definitely a while ago as the couch was replaced by recliners ages ago) at night watching this when i was little.

  • loved this opening so much when i was little, reminded me of clue and beetlejuice, two of my favorite movies, thanks for posting!!

  • I totally remembered this opening but I always forgot what show it was

  • Just creepy but I luv it!!!

  • This animation helped to shape the weirdo I am today. Thank you Uncle Edward.

  • Animated Edward Gorey on Youtube confounded her

  • I will always love this opening! I wonder if they have a book with these images, I want to frame it in my living room using a 6 picture frame.

  • i like this op way beter thin the one on now i used to stay up just to wasc this

  • that crying women scared the shit out of me when I was a kid

  • @LTDANMAN44 Me too but more shitless.

  • @LTDANMAN44 I agree with you dude.

  • Does anyone know the name of this song?

  • I loved it then, and I still love it now.

  • i know its a cartoon but the bat lady is hot. what do you people think?

  • OK, check out 0:19 and 0:55 - why did they make the woman in the lavender dress blonde?

  • OMG this is so cool!! What's the music called? Who composed the music?? I love Edward Gorey!!!

  • I loved this intro as a kid as well...it was deliciously creepy and it really had a mysterious vibe to the art as well as the characters and music. I loved it.

  • I loved watching this intro with my grandma when I was little - then I'd leave when the show started! XD

Whatever happened to it? I could have sworn they still used it a few years back, but it didn't seem to be on tonight's Mystery. :( I was sad.

  • @BartimaeusTrilogyFan I'm pretty sure they just started using the new one really recently. :( I was pretty disappointed...

  • @BartimaeusTrilogyFan LOL that is so funny you said that. I also use to love watching the intro of this show, but as soon as it went off I either turned the channel or left the room. I don't think I ever watched the actual show. Now that I am an adult maybe I will give the whole show a try if I can find it somewhere :D

  • @BartimaeusTrilogyFan Stopped using it in 2008...after almost 30 years (with some variations...but kept the same basic formula and included the wailing woman in all of themand the theme song). They merged Mystery! with Masterpiece Theatre and now call it Masterpiece Mystery. The opening still includes clips of this old animation, but the theme song is gone.

  • That Bat Lady Is Who Scared Me As A Kid!

  • ...and also by WGBH Boston

  • I remember this intro when I was younger. Good stuff!!

  • Edward Gorey was a MASTER. Proof that you could be a full blown weirdo and still have a good life.

BTW-scared of the roof lady? Are you kidding me?!

  • @ccipollini1984 That wailing scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. Especially when you're the only one awake in a dark house in the middle of the woods.

  • i love the music piece they use for this does it have a name???

  • I've been looking for this for a really long time. Thank you for posting.

  • This is one of those TV shows I remember watching just for the opening and closing credits.

  • A great opening to a great show. Thanks for posting it, brings back a lot of good memories growing up. My only question is, who plays croquet during a thunderstorm?:-)

  • Thanks for the vid brings back many memories of my youth! Use to creep me out as a kid funny stuff!

  • i remembered watching this with my grandpa when i was really young...wow i really did love this opening

  • i could never understand why the woman was on the roof though...

  • this stirs up so many memories!!!!

  • I've been looking for this FOREVER! Thank you! =D

  • I love that the PBS kids' show Arthur did a parody of this at the beginning of the episode "Binky Rules".

That woman on the rooftop always scared me when I was a kid.

  • God! Thanks for uploading! Edward was a genius in writing and animation :)

  • what about the ending theme that is so darkly romantic that that have now? i love it.

  • Hahaha, use to love this animation as a kid when my dad would watch masterpiece, kinda what slowly got me into those fantastic mysteries. Shame that they changed the intro .

  • AH! I've always loved the opening to this!!

  • Been watching Mystery since I was very little. I love this stuff!

  • I remember watching Miss Marple as a kid and seeing this intro.

    ...

    ...Agatha Christie FTW

  • This used to scare me SO much when I saw it as a little kid!

  • @AdventureSerum,

Scared me too, lol. But now I'm a huge fan of the intro. It's more fun to watch than the actual movies sometimes.

  • @AdventureSerum Me too. I was terrified of it. I think it was mostly because of the lady on the roof.

  • @difdrummer What the heck are you talking about?

  • @Thompsonnw The lady on the roof wailing terrified me as a kid.

  • @difdrummer Thanks that terrified me too but shitless.

  • Edward Goery's opening and closing bits stole the show on Mystery! The live action stories didn't even remotely compare. They were drab and dull and empty. zzzzzzzzzzz...

But alot of other viewers obviously liked them because the series lasted for years.

Apart from the brilliant Edward Gorey bits.I only found the Vincent Price and Diana Rigg intros to be of any interest.

Bet the stories on Mystery! bored both of them stiff as well. Wouldn't be surprised.

  • Yeah the stories bored me stupid. I would suffer the whole show just to see the animation at the closing credits.

  • wow, its been so long. i had no idea what this was as a kid

  • Thanks to people such as yourself my childhood memories are much more clear.

  • love me some edward gorey! this piece is what got me into his work :D

  • Oh man this intro used to scare the heck outta me when I was a little kid! Now that I see it as an adult though it makes alot more sense.

  • This was so fucking good. I would look up from my toys on the floor in my Nano's living room just long enough to watch the cartoon and then as soon as the British detective from the 1400s came on I would zone out.

  • Oh God, I LOVED this opening when I was young! It brings back so many memories. I didn't understand ANY of the shows back then, but I watched them anyway because of this opening.

  • same with me, for some odd reason I thought this animation was just the coolest thing when I was younger

  • Thats exactly what I was just telling my mom! I loved this opening for some reason, but I didn't understand what was going on. I was never allowed to watch the shows because my mom said they were too scary. I was probably around 4 or 5 then though :P

  • @XXaquaseaXX likewise.

  • @XXaquaseaXX hahaha saaaame!!! :D

  • Gorey is amazing , love his books , this is great !)

  • You know, the stupid assholes at PBS Have changed the masterpiece mystery opening. Instead of this animation they show some clips of it with a flipping book.

I can't believe they did this the open to this is usually better than the shows.

  • I remember watching this on Saturdays when I was younger. :) Good times, but it changed to Digital or something, so we dont get it anymore. :( I miss Mystery!...

  • We lost PBS as well which is a real shame since Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery! were things I always watched during the summer.

  • When I was little I used to run from the room when this went on; it was too sinister or something... but now I love the show and LOVE Gorey and Lamb's bumper animations... I miss this show so much!

  • I would gladly play any sport in the rain.... this show rasied from youth to question all that seemed odd...

  • Who the hell plays croquet in the rain

  • Gorey and Addams, the masters of macabre!

  • I always loved this intro...never once watched the actual show though, lol.

  • ahahaha i was the exact same way

  • HEY !!! this is like the remake of the one in arthur

  • i almost did a tap dance to this song. xDD. but i love edward gorey <3. the gashleycrumb tineys should be required reading for children learning the alphabet.

  • EDWARD GOREY!!

  • I KNOW! it's great.

  • This intro used to scare the HELL out of me when I was a kid. My parents would watch it every week, and as soon as I heard the music I would run upstairs to my bedroom. But I'm so glad I saw this again. It's very different from what I remember but very familiar at the same time.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH, FOR POSTING THIS!!! It's my FAVORITE show (when we can be lucky enough to get it...), and I so preferred this opening!!! Again, thank you....

  • Mystery on PBS! I always loved the part of the building falling down and the women at the top. LOL

    One of my fav. shows!

  • I'm very glad that so many of you enjoy this.

  • Edward Gorey's work made me the man I am today.

  • The opening of the show Mystery on PBS!

  • OMG! I remember this theme! Wow, it used to really capture my imagination, kinda scared me too. :P

  • hahah i remeber this from when i was little, i dont remember the show but i used to watch the intro then be dont with it hahahahha

  • I absolutely adored this intro as a child. I would watch it and then leave haha. Really takes me back.

  • in the Arthur version of the intro , didn't something come out of the thing Francine playing the Bat-lady was holding?

  • The only time I saw this was when I watched The Murder Room on th show Mystery! I guess I should watch Mystery! more often

  • I miss this intro so much now... they could have at least kept the music! D:

  • i wonder why those guys with the moustaches holding the mirror don't have eyes

  • No one has eyes, except for the bat lady.

  • are u sure I think the guys holding the mirror are the only one that don't have eyes

  • either way man, it's just the artist's style.

  • I hate the new Masterpiece theme! I agree, the music was hauntingly lovely. I wish they had kept it!

  • I'm sooooo mad that the new Masterpiece changed it...they didn't even keep the music *tears*...

  • Yeah--I've been watching "Inspector Lewis" and enjoying it, but am appalled at the gutting of the theme and music. May the ghost of Edward Gorey haunt them!

  • Edward Gorey is AWESOME! This intro still give me shivers. Love it!

  • I love this so much.

  • As a kid, I LOVED this introduction! I would stick around just for the intro and the then leave haha. Such a cool artistic style. Very macabre.

  • that is EXACTLY how I was as a kid too!! --Crazy!

  • Me too! The actual show was always so boring to me compared to the intro.

  • Me too! I wish Edward Gorey and Derek Lamb had made an animated series.

  • I love this intro. Many very pleasant Sunday nights began with this. :D

  • I saw the series, but Gorey was a genius!

  • They parodied this on an episode of "Arthur." It had a statue of Mr. Haney with the skeleton in it at the beginning, and Muffy was the wailing woman on the roof, and Francine was the lady in the bat-winged mask, and it ended with Fern dressed as Sherlock Holmes.

  • That's right! I saw that once and vaguely remembered it being the parody of something else on PBS, but it wasn't until last night that I watched Mystery again for the first time in years. Enlightening.

  • Does anyone have a clip of the Arthur version???

  • Comment removed

  • *This* is the intro I remember. And it's made by Edward Gorey and Derek Lamb! That's really cool. Thanks for the upload.

  • I remember that!
