mental ray Rendering Techniques: Interiors training

Does anybody have a problem with duplicating Area lights...I was following this tutorial set up a light did everything as instructed, but once I made 6 copys of area lights just one or two lights worked, others didn't at all...looks like they don't cast photons at all, but I've checked it many times, parameters are set up correctly.

Does anybody experience the same problem???

I guess my question is: how do I set all the area outside a spotlight as black in an alpha...so that I can animate and have in an alpha the objects that are iluminated by that spotlight?

Hi. I'm creating a 3d fly through of an aparment I'm creating and im using these techniques. However the back of my scene (furthest away from the area light is too dark and I can't seem to light the back of the scene without washing out the front.. any ideas?
