James Lovelock (born 26 July 1919 - died 13 March 2015) was an independent scientist, environmentalist and futurologist from England. He is best known for proposing the Gaia hypothesis, which postulates that the biosphere is a self-regulating entity with the capacity to keep our planet healthy by controlling the chemical and physical environment.
iam not a religious person. I thought about the posebility of "Gaia theory", withou any knowledge about it is excisting. I started my thinkin rocess with a Game ( Final Fantasy 7) later with the Movie (Final Fantasy : Spirits within). a. It sounds logical b. it sounds beatiful, we are all a part of that big thing. Noneed a sacrifiing Messiah. Or an allmighty God with endless goodness who let ppl die in Africa. All relgions i've heard dont sounds true to me. This is the only thing i can handle.
@PriestChristopher it wasnt just the Greeks, it was also the egyptians, who called the earth Geb. and african tribes before Kemet also worshiped spirits of the earth.
Especially if people like the Rockefellars using HARRP holy shit Gaia must be fuckin pissed! Messin with her weather and creating earthquakes! Down with the NWO and illuminati scum! They are killing our planet! They are blind!
Didn't finish... carbon-based mammals to breathe. We have a symbiotic relationship with every organism and system on this planet Earth. Let's not destroy that.
The video is a little slow and does not explain the Gaia theory as well as it could. I do subscribe to the theory. How beautiful that the branches of every tree act as a circulatory system for the planet, taking in CO2, releasing O2, allowing us carbon-based mam
The Greek mythological system is interesting. Gaia came from 'Chaos' and from her came the original Sky Father, Ouranus. Ouranus then also become her equal husband. Later in history, future religions abandoned the Earth Goddess and only saw the Father of the sky ('Heavenly Father' - the "idol" at the core of monotheisms even today). It seems that this trend of civilization for thousands of years has brought with it a dangerously unbalanced, biased and tainted philosophy with dire results.
I've been a proud Gaian for a good while now and it is, without a doubt, one of the most beneficial belief systems to endorse.
If this was taught in schools, rather than "mainsteam" religion - there would be substantially less violence, substantially less war and substantially more precautionary measures taken in regards to pollution.
Gaia is our beautiful mother. It's the only "religion" that makes any physical sense. It NEEDS to be globally expressed. For the good of all living organisms.
It's a quaint notion that the world is in fact a single organism but that simply just isn't the case. For one thing the earth doesn't reproduce, which is a requirement of being a living organism. And from a less technical standpoint it is clear that humans are existing out of this self regulating balance. One thing that I do agree with about this theory is that the earth has the potential to shift from what we perceive to be the norm to a mode which would prove far less hospitable for us.
@Aridanx - He didnt say the world is a "single" organism, he said its a super organism which it does resemble. Humans arent living outside of a self regulating balance (communities were often nomadic), we are in the middle of that self regulating shift as we have just entered globalisation. you should read his book.
@Aridanx Thats just a matter of definition. "The system appears to exhibit the behaviour of a single organism" is what Lovelock said (1979). Like Sagain said, sending probes into space could seed new planets, via microbes etc transferred, so perhaps over the cosmic timescale of things, planets can actually reproduce, once they have reached maturity - i.e. intelligent life that can build things to reach other planets.
@Aridanx And secondly, how is it clear that humans are existing out of the self-regulating balance? We effect the atmosphere, just by being alive (i.e. O2-CO2 cycling), but also from industries and pollution etc. So we definitely are a component of the global system. How can anything live on the earth and not partake in some way in the global system?
It's such a shame that this video, and others of James Lovelock have been viewed by so few people.
I would hope everyone posts them on their facebook or myspace. It's more important than ever that messages like this are brought to the publics attention.
James Lovelock is a great communicator, and if people were given the facts as he sees them they might not be so complacent to think that recycling their milk cartons once a week is enough to save the Earth.
makes sense. i still think that other types of life can contain, and thrive in much different atmosphereical conditions.
i think life can thrive in a place where helium or any other gas is abundant. as long as there is water or ice.
maybe not even water.
we can make machines and engines that run off a virtually any gas or liquid found on earth in one wayor another so why cant natural biological mechanical organisms like us find away to live off of it.
Gaia is not an idea. It's something I can see with my own eyes. Something that trancetechnicians percieve and communicate (with) since thousands of years.
@chris8702 Yes. Although the idea of Gaia, or Mother Nature, has been around for millennia, Lovelock brought the ideas together to form the Gaia Hypothesis, with some scientific observations and reasoning to back up his ideas.

May his spirit rest in peace forever.

The astronomer Carl Sagan remarked that from a cosmic viewpoint, the space probes since 1959 have the character of a planet preparing to go to seed.
Earth is using humans to plant a seed on another planet!!

Gaia is a very interesting idea
but it is also a very naive and stupid idea
there is really no way for it to be possible that the earth as a single common interest.

It is precisely the reason why this planet is trouble. Too many people can not see the interconnected nature of all things. Read E O Wilson
Baerable 2 years ago
seing the connections among events
that is part of the definition of superstition.
It is VERY easy to see connections, it is only through scientific investigation that you will discover disconnections that you never knew about.

James Lovelock has just now come out with a statement that the Earth will Purge 6 Billion People in the Next 90 years
and that can't be stopped....
unless Humanity gets in first.
