Cool Soundin' pick up. I'm from Argentina and yesterday i just got from USA an L-500 xl (very hard to find in this lands) , so i can`t wait to hear it scream on one of my guitars !!
badass playiong dude your floods solo was noting compared to mine =) lol need to get those pinch harmonics in and sound better thats what those pickups were made for keep up the work!!!!!
dont get me wrong though, all 3 of these, BLUSA, W&B, and Dimebuckers really do sound identical minus some eq shaping. Also, in terms of output hotness, it goes: Dimebucker>W&B L500XL>BLUSA. You can't even play the Dimebucker on a clean channel without it being overdriven slightly.
From what I used and what my own ears told me (any other peoples ears vary of course) but the Wili and Becky (that's right.. his name isn't actually Bill) has a lot more low-mid dynamics while the Bill Lawrence USA version has more high-mids. I played a Wili and Becky model in the new Dean from Hell and wasn't too impressed. I bought a BLUSA model and I love it. The tone is virtually the same, but there's something in the source eq that sounds better to me in the BLUSA.
So, how do you tell if you have a real Bill Lawrence? I have one installed in my Sg and it has no logo on the pickup. Underneath the pup it has a "Made in the USA" sticker.
@italianmetallkrieger Thats opinion because I personally didn't like the Wili (his name isn't Bill and never was) and Becky L500XL when I tried it out. But I love my BLUSA model.
@italianmetallkrieger not the whole world man there's a lot of people who like the BLUSA models more. It depends on what you like. Don't get me wrong, after writing about this I decided to order a pickup from Wili for my new guitar so I can spend some time with it, actually owning it, rather than go off of the few minutes that I had with it in the shop from before. I may change my mind, and I may not.
@wslx0195 His name isn't Bill, but that's what his patents are under and that's what his pickups are marketed under. So yes, it is a Bill & Becky L500XL. Also the BLUSA (Wajcman, notice how his name isn't Bill either...) is the fake and is alot muddier. I've got both in identical guitars.
@MrORLY Yeah I have the BLUSA model but it doesnt sound 'muddy' to me. Check out my videos (except the guitar solo dude, that one he is playing EMGs). I'm just messing around back when I used to play more but I wouldn't call it muddy.
@MrORLY Nvm I removed the video with my friend playing emgs so there's just the two with me playing the blusa. I'll probably rename and tag the video .
@wslx0195 Pretty sick skills, but when I play both my BL equipped guitars side by side, the B&B has ALOT more definition, I prefer almost everything about it, it's just too noisy. I probably just tend to notice it alot more because I play alot of Math Metal etc... (Think Periphery) so alot of open chords etc...
@MrORLY Math metal styles are pretty fun. I guess I have kind of experienced the muddiness that you speak of in open chords. Each note doesn't really have definition from one another. If that's what you're talking about, I thought it was more related to my amp.
@AlyxAphelia That's a Wili (bill) and becky model, the one that all these tools go around saying is "real" if that makes you sleep better at night. However, the BLUSA models are real too.
@jatyon123 they're rare. .... I say .. ebay? Those were Wili's (Bill) original patented L500 models that he started with in Germany and here in the US in the 70s.
@Rocket1771 It still sounds good, that's all that matters, and if you can't get a top tier guitar, just aiming for a great sound is what the point is anyway.
I gotta go with spyicu as far as being totally impressed with Bill&Becky's L500. I have no idea what the BL-USA sounds like in person--probably very good. All I know is I started by buying one p/u for a Tele, loved it, bought several more for my other Teles- more love--bought some for my Strats-same result--and now I tried out a 500XL and love that ! Plus, they cost half or 1/3 of most of the small p/u winders. My guess would be that the USA's are really good too but I'm sticking with Bill&Becky
from what i heard from dimebag himself (video) he gets from stewart-macdonald. bill lawrence USA is stew-mac. i did extensive research and it all points to bill and becky being not the original, though he did say also that it is too trebley. he said "squirmy"
Obviously not enough research, the Bill and Becky pickups are the original design. The BLUSA pickups have several important differences that make them sound different. Yes, Dime said, "Stew Mac", but, I have seen production guitars with both versions in them, from the same model line.
I have too...I've played both versions and honestly, when you start throwing all sorts of effects into like most people do, sonicly you can't hear the difference.
Usually, the only time I here a difference in any pickup is with different magnets or different impedance coils. The average norm being; 8K neck, 16K bridge - with Alnico V or cheaper Ceramic magnets.
spyicu is so full of crap. i've seen his/her canned advertisement for bill and becky on every video associated with the L-500XL. it makes it sound like it's a miracle pickup. "a weird extra amount of gain" lol like voodoo is involved. i have no side, but i did order the USA one. i have a feeling that i'll be happy with it, though i think i'd be happy with a bill and becky, too. stock jackson pups, you know.
Advertisement? Bull shit, Im just one really satisfied customer. This pickup being the last one ive tried. I've played the dimebucker for the past 7 years and played on my cousins bill lawrence USA for a month at home. After this pickup that bill and becky sent, it's just unbelievable man. I've been playing for a little over 8 years and I finally found THE SOUND I was looking for with this pickup. It's amazing
Not to add fuel to a fire, but just look on the Bill Lawrence USA website. Literally the first thing on the site is: "Disclaimer: Jzchak Wajcman dba *Bill Lawrence USA, is not associated with the designer *Bill Lawrence since 1984." The company was founded with the real Bill and then Jzchak cut Bill out and basically trademarked Bill's name. There is no comparison between the real Bill Lawrence work and the Lawrence USA stuff. The engineering just isn't there for Lawrence USA.
how can you tell if you have a original or a usa one because I just got a dean ml 79 off ebay and it has a bill lawrence 1500xl and all i know is it sounds immense. It sounds better than my esp ex 400 with active emg 81/85's
You could open up the guitar and look at the bottom to see if there's a company sticker on it, but it's probably easier to simply ask the person you bought it from if they installed it and what they are. If they're pre-installed it's most likely Bill Lawrence USA.
A quick google search finds me a couple sites selling the ML-79 with a "Bill Lawrence L-500XL" but when you search these same sites, the only pickups that they actually sell with the Bill Lawrence name on it are stamped as Bill Lawrence USA.
@spyicu so the bill and becky pickup sounds alot better than both the dimebucker and the bill lawrence USA? i was think about getting the dimebucker, should i wait and get the L-500XL from bill and becky? i will if it makes that much difference.
@gamari4354 yes get the bill and becky. dont waste your time with the other. trust me, it's totally worth it. ya gotta wait a little bit but it's totally worth the wait
this is not an original bill lawrence...

Well, for the first, original bill lawrence, made by MR bill lawrence, has no logo.
then, from the sound.
bill lawrence usa has a shitty sound, high on middles and treble, poor on bass, so cold and empty.

Of course bill&becky are the originals. Same as OBL, "made in germany" are the originals.
I believe i read dimebag played the (inferrior in every way) fakes made by Jzchak 'EZ' Wajcman.
Cheers :)
