  • Just got this link from the BBC article

amazing that the press (guardian, BBC) still idolise the company in the amount of press their columnists give, which shows obvious bias compared to other tech companies, esp. based on market share.

  • @mfraz74 too bad i just read about it in a bbc article...

  • Nazis of the technology world.

  • Cunts. They are fucked now Jobs is dead.

  • Robots. Apple sucks.

  • I like having itunes integrated, i don't mind paying for content, I'm in PR, and i would have done the same thing (though maybe a bit more subtley). The journalist most certainly knew he'd get shot down, but of course he had to try. who cares. this happens daily at all companies.

  • the new generations of iPod have encryption which makes it REALLY hard to update with anything but iTunes. This guy is asking the right questions!

  • One day all of these companies will die. So whats the hubbub and hooplah. If you really wish to rail on profitable monopolies. Go after religion for a change.

  • It is not unsual for companies to want to control their media releases and image to the public.

Politicians insist on very rigid question scope when they are interviewed and they have to have all the questions in advance. In some ways they are more accountable than a company like Apple.

So don't think that Apple is the only company that does this.

  • I have never bought an Apple product and don't feel I have missed out on anything

  • The answer's here already, as the lady said they were obviously very excited about the iPhone and so wanted to stay focussed on that. Seems fair enough to me.

  • Another good reason to avoid apple products like the plague.

You're not interested in honestly answering a question? Interview over. that's all I need to know about a company to never spend a dime with them. Looks like moving to andriod was a great call after all!

  • @DStynchula Silly reason to move to android. Apple make good products fact. Although I disagree with the way that was dealt plenty of other big companies probably do the same

  • @Swiftyll: I couldn't disagree more. Hubris like this is a GREAT reason to vote with my feet. Using the behaviour of others to justify bad behaviour is nothing more than a lack of personal responsibility. I take responsibility for my actions, and that includes supporting companies that provide alternatives to companies that behave this way. After using Android for a month, I'm really glad I made the switch! It's a FAR more customisable, and open platform.

  • This video is fucking hilarious. What more proof do people need that this company is a bunch of douchebags? It's fucking SICKENING that these are the fags killing the physical music industry. I hope they all die painfully like their faggot leader Steve Jobs did.

  • @517anon

Don't speak ill of dead you moron, have some self respect. Regardless of the fact that I agree with the rest of your message.

  • @517anon Really? If it wasn't apple it would be somebody else. Frankly, I'm glad to be done with physical media. First the outrageous prices they charged for CDs. 2nd, who wants to have to carry their whole CD collection with them all the time. 3rd you must be a very unhappy person to react to Steve Jobs death that way and to call him a faggot. What are you 13 years old? Grow up.

I've used both and I prefer the Apple environment. As they always say, it just works.

  • @pinetec -_-

  • @517anon iTunes killed the physical music industry? Really? 'Cause I'm pretty sure the music industry was in deep shit long before iTunes came on the scene. iTunes saved the music industry by getting people to pay for digital content. Without iTunes, the music industry would be much worse off than it is. Maybe you should think about what you're saying before you post such utter shit.

  • @IntoTheDavyDark The music industry was in deep shit? News to me.File sharing has cost Artists dearly. Now if you want to make millions as a rock star you've got to play live gigs.Apple have made a lot of money using their monopoly, but so have microsoft and thinking about it, your local supermarket.Itunes is not the best music site out there, there are plenty of others, they just have good marketing. This site YT, is the biggest bandit of them all,but don't you love it.

  • Anyone else get the feeling that this is identical cultish behavior similar to Scientology?

  • @lohphat Funny you should say that, I was thinking exacty the same thing, reminded me of the Loius Theroux scientology documentary!

  • @lohphat I dunno, I reckon press management is a skill nowadays. The less you say, the less people can misinterpret. Apple + Scientology...is it just me, or do they seem to go hand in hand?

  • @lohphat HOLY SHIT I knew the way they were speaking reminded me of something!!!

  • Th reporter should have asked: "Is this an interview or a scripted advert?"

  • Apple sucks

  • Should have just asked them this question about the iphone: "what ways are there to get my music onto it?"

  • coffee IN hand, umm we're off topic here....

  • This is fucking disturbing.

  • Apple is not a government organization. They don't owe information to the media or the public. They have have made their money, kept alive (don't laugh - they very nearly died before Steve Jobs came back and laid down some strict rules) by carefully controlling their image. Also, they are not a bloated corporation - they are one of the most efficient and focussed companies in the world. The reporter was asking a hostile, loaded, leading question. Naturally the Apple people went on the defensive.

  • Comment removed

  • @TuringOracle However, they *are* answerable to their shareholders, and one bad soundbite can ruin the week for many of them. If someone from the media was in your face asking hostile questions about your life or business, you'd be entitled to walk away, answer or not - completely up to you. The press is free to ask what it likes, but private citizens are not obliged to answer.

  • hahaha

  • My biggest bugbear with iPhone, they are half arsed phones (just so they can release an updated version a year later) presented as decent phones.

  • Disgraceful.

  • You wouldn't get this on the BBC, they'd be too scared to get into Apples bad books!

  • The Apple PR guy is uncannily Malcolm Tucker-like.

  • The chick was even worse. Just parting a bunch of buzzwords and phrases to attempt to steer the interview into an iPhone commercial.

Wake up people, these people are just thieving bastards shoving a product down your throat.

  • this is all personal and I now get it, the reporter Benjamin Cohen use to own the itunes.co.uk domain name and it was forcibly taken from him by apple. Thumbs up to Benjamin Cohen.

  • PR people are suppressors of press freedom.

  • well done channel 4,sick of that company.

  • We need reminders like this short glimpse into the way our "news" manufactured and manipulated. Two thumbs up.

  • It's like Scientology... where's Miscavidge?

  • what a load of wanky wank wank

  • Apple Pr FAIL. you'd think they earn enough not to make massive errors like that.

  • Put your coffee down and stop being a unt©!

  • Channel 4 got off pretty lightly given Malcolm Tucker's apparently now doing Apple's PR.

  • An utter lack of class on Apple's part

  • This reminds me of North Korea.

  • @halfprice2 There's no comparison to Apple's evasiveness and the North Korean government's dictatorial atrocities.

  • @SuperWhiteKidd The evasiveness is exactly what I was referring to. This vid reminded me of a TV documentary when the minder intervened when the press asked a Korean about starvation or something like that.

  • @halfprice2 Oh sorry, in that case, my bad.

  • apple is like the muthafuckin mob lmao, not complainin tho i have an iphone 4 and enjoy it. gotta say tho that the samsung galaxy s captivate is looking very appealing

  • Too all apple commentors. Apple is a company, that makes products. If you like the products ? buy it. If not don't buy it...It is that simple

  • channel 4, best tv channel in the world

    nuff said

  • so rude

  • Glad to see a hiccup in the the Apple publicity machine.

Buy into the Apple corporate machine if you really believe the hype.

If you have any kind of individuality or free will, have a think about your purchase and ask yourself "Do I really need this item in my life and is it worth the cash that I am spending?"

  • is that the apple store on oxford street?? london,

  • I think the PR handlers should have let Phil answer the rather benign question. Alan probably over reacted to this. Apple execs with enough PR coaching and experience - and "sans" the PR folks - are actually very approachable, in my opinion.

  • That's not Steve Jobs...

  • But having said that, yes... Apple's attitude stinks here.

  • The iTunes *Store* is a different thing. Yes, it's a rip-off. You pay high-prices for low-to-medium bitrate downloads. But there's no obligation to use it with your iPod. Neither your iPod nor iTunes will be particularly lacking if you never look at the Store (although they have some fantastic free podcasts in there). You can use mp3s, AACs or various other files from wherever you want (with the usual observations regarding legality!)

  • The difficult with this subject is that people often conflate "iTunes" and "iTunes Store". Yes, the iPod is a better product if you use it with iTunes... no problem, it's a free app and does lots of cool stuff with podcast subscriptions etc. Complaining about the iPod not working as well with (for example) Windows Media Player is like complaining because some cool Toyota hubcaps won't fit your BMW.

  • Aha apple arguing with channel 4

  • spill the starbucks on their faces is what the reporter should of done for being retards

  • hahah - look at those fuckers

  • fuck apple.

    the end

  • Apple kicks Bill Gates Nerdy ass

  • Tell that to the 80% market share Microsoft has. Seen the new iPod shuffle? Looks like a tampon..

But seriously, they're just operating systems. I never got the constant Mac Vs. PC hostility..

  • It's true, Apple does force iTunes on users. But Microsoft forces Windows Media Player on users too. So whats the big deal?

Of course Apple forces it's products on users. It's fair and if you don't agree don't buy Apple or Microsoft products.

    It's that simple.

  • At least you can chuck almost everything in windows without hurting performance in the slightest. Non-integration ftw!

  • Apple are an evil company, their cheap shit is all marketing gimmicks and no quality. Im glad the iphone is a flop.

  • Peice of shit I phone

  • Look at them, with their Starbucks and olive sweat shirts. Shame on you Apple! Shame on you!

  • "have a lot going on today...want to stay focused" lol

  • apple is a satanic company,

they are forcing on you everyting and anything.

  • that guy in the green is scary and they do kinda force itunes on you which is unfair

  • That was a stupid question! How do you create a monopoly on something free?! Beside, it is a quality control issue. Apple provide a complete user experience, that's how they have been doing business since they started 30 years ago. Apple knows that the majority of people don't care what software to use as long as it is spam free, work flawlessly, and easy to use. Just because we have been used to have software and hardware developed independently in the past doesn't make it the standard today.

  • @q8trading Obviously you weren't around during the Microsoft Internet Explorer debate which lasted an entire decade.

  • @coresnake0 totally different situations. MS used its monopoly in the OS market to gain control in different market (browsers) using illegal methods such as making their competitors browsers (Netscape) buggy and slow. I was around and I debated it many times. Apple did not and cannot use their large market share in MP3 players (iPod) and jukebox software (iTunes) to gain market share in the smartphone market. It is not just possible. The proof! Now four years later Apple cut the cord with iOS 5.

  • phil schiller is dumbass or what??WTF

  • apple sucks

  • Spot the spin doctors.

  • iPwned!!

  • Ha! Ha! IPhone PAWNED

  • channel 4 is like the second best terestrial tv channel in amercian (dont need a freeview box etc tow watch it). it is the channel that originally started big brother!

  • WRONG! Big bro was first broadcast in holland.

  • Dislike Apple has anyone else.. but COME ON it was a stupid question..

i thought it was a cliche guys that work with apple drink starbucks wherever they go..

  • lols the definitions of yuppies right there.

  • What a bunch of numpties.

As soon as the guy touches on a subject which could give them a bad image about how you have download itunes onto your computer to even use you ipod which is annoying (i have one) they go skitso at him =p.

Guy in the green was a bit of a fruit cake and the lassie on the left was but ugly aswell. =p

  • "What we would like you to do now"

(what they mean: we'll tell you what questions we would like you to ask so that u get a completely bland "interview" that only serves as an advertisement for our bloated corporation, whilst ignoring all the actual issues at hand)

Well, thank god the people at channel 4 aren't as braindead as most media groups)

  • Channel 4 is probably the most prominent tv station in the world, cutting edge, innovative and informative beyond anything the US have. They are not there to fuel a promotion free of charge for Apple, they are there to uncover the true agenda of the product - its called News!

  • @Euadam

    > Channel 4 is probably the most prominent tv station in the world

or, there's like, the BBC, or some shit.

  • @doublej999 errr.....yeah.....no.

  • @Euadam Thats a joke, Channel 4 the most prominenet TV station in in the world.(what word, the world of Oxford) You must be having a laugh, I am

  • OMG!!!

did you hear the one that this women got peppered sprayed nd she got brain damage

    scary

i used to live wit them few years ago and i feel sooooo srry for them and her :(

  • i thought the guy in green was a girl...

  • omg, the way they try to "handle" the situation makes them look like complete retards.

    rc55 has a valid point here! :)

  • They should pull a Scientology - "WHAT ARE YOUR CRIMES BENJAMIN? DO YOU BEAT YOUR WIFE? YOU JUST WANT TO ATTACK APPLE BECAUSE WE SET MINDS FREE!!"

  • Capitalist idiots.

  • normal reaction

  • The guy in the green is a dumbass and that girl needs to get laid freakin suckups

  • they got the nerve to give lecture with a starbucks, who the fuck do they think are try to be more respectable next time!!!

  • So you don't like the software. Well I don't like the HP drivers for HP printers.. but that doesn't mean HP has a monopoly. It means I don't buy HP. "HP should make it so I can use any printing software I want too!!" Sounds sad, but the same thing. I think the "monopoly" term is being spread by jealous companies.

  • Thats a difference between drivers and interaction software.

If HP made word processors, and locked their printers to their word processors, while having a controlling share of the printer market, it would be a similar comparison.

  • Somebody can make a product. They don't have to they just can. You as a consumer can buy a product, you don't have to, but you can.

As in; a iPod exists, yet people call it a monopoly because they make the best Mp3 player. As if it's life threatening that you must my THIS Mp3 player and you feel threatened.

  • haha the man in the green top is so a bender u fuckin gay

  • Oh Christ. Give me a break. Monopoly? If people want to use other portable digital music players they are welcome to.

  • Apple is very clever in the way they market and build monopoly into their products. This is clearly an edgy issue and even the VP doesnt want to talk about it. I'm glad they carried on filming!

  • ahhh modern technology, bringing everyone closer together!!

  • standing in front of the camera? the PR twat walking in front of the camera & they carried on filming. I am so glad they aired this - I saw it. Channel 4 news (daily 7pm-8pm) is the most popular TV News show in the UK - they appeal to the academic & most wealthy demographic.

  • boring

  • But there is a valid question I was wondering about. My main concern for not buying ipod products is iTunes, which I find irritating to use and restrictive in the type of media format it rips to. So is the iPhone restricted to iTunes or not? If it is, I wouldn't buy it, its a question that would sway many peoples oppinions.

  • it is.

  • It's a leading question and there's no way that Phil could have answered that question without putting his job in jeopardy.

Apple has not used deceptive tactics or been predatory with their business. However, that question is predatory and worthy of dismissal.

Having said that, if he just used the same tactic that politicians use when a question is predatory (ignore the premise of the asked question and answer a question that wasn't asked) it probably would never have made a single headline.

  • (Disclaimer: I'm a long time Mac and iPod fan and user)

That chap in the greenish sweater is the most condescending and irritating oik I've seen and this treatment of a valid question is a disgrace. I personally don't think Apple does have a monopoly, but this behaviour by Apple sucks the big one and I'm glad the video is out.

  • If this was Steve Balmer and Microsoft it would be front page news and headlines on news TV shows. Since it's Apple, it's just on Youtube.

  • God, SHUT THE FUCK UP!

You people say this all the time, and most of the time it is never true! Besides Balmer is a CEO, Schiller is not!

  • YOU BETTER SHUT UP, GO AND EAT AN APPLE

  • ha the expression on that guy is super funny

  • Just another reason to never own anything made by Apple.

  • What reason was that again?

  • U.S. District Court

    California Northern District (San Jose)

CIVIL DOCKET FOR CASE #: 5:05-cv-00037-JW

"The Apple iPod iTunes Anti-Trust Litigation"

    Assigned to: Hon. James Ware

  • Yawn!! Not even news worthy.

  • Good for Apple!!!

  • There's so little to this video one can even really comment on it. We don't know what happened before or after this footage, it could be skewed to anyone's favor. And of course we all know reporters are kind, patient, considerate people. And the media never lies to as (just like corporations and government too, right?). Lol. Seriously, find a better video, no matter who you may favor!

  • STEVE JOBS FTW

  • iTunes doesn't have a monopoly, at least here in the US. There are multiple other music stores that sell music in the mp3 format (or the unprotected WMA format that iTunes will automatically convert to AAC or mp3) and will work perfectly fine with iPod/iPhone.

  • I'll stick with my Dreamcast ;)

  • so wheres the 1st part of the interview

  • wow , brits are horrible!

  • Yet most of the world still hates you.

    *sigh*

(oh, and how's that dollar doing? Won't be long before American migrant workers flock to the UK so they can pay for that wooden shack back home...hmm, thats if they can find the UK, seeing as a lot of them have trouble locating their own country on a map...the third largest frigging land mass on the globe ffs).

  • There's red America and blue America, each with an entirely different ideology, level of education, and core values. The world hates red America (Bush country).

On the other hand, seeing as how the Brits have colonized, raped and pillaged more of the planet than the US ever has, and for longer, we've only been the target of hatred for about 7 years as opposed to close to a millennium of hatred for you guys. We took the heat off you, you're welcome. :)

  • PR people from any company don't like those kinda questions... it goes with the whole "public relations" thing. Funny how that works.

  • PR people from any company don't like those kinda questions. I think it has something to do with the whole "Public Relations" thing. Funny how that works eh?

I bet the PR folks for your employer feel similarly about "looking bad" in front of the market.

  • My employer wants us to tell the truth to the media, even when we screw up big time. We think people are not stupid and soones than later are gonna find out if we're telling the truth or just covering something up for "Good PR". We care about doing the right thing.

  • If you don't like it, you're certainly not being forced to use it. Keep buying CDs. As for 99% of the non-Luddites, iTunes and iPods are a quantum leap above the alternative.

  • From what you see in the video, it seems the interviewer got this interview with the pretense of talking about the iPhone. If this is the case, then Apple was blind-sided and I don't blame them for being pissed.

  • ALL applications have problems, its just that iTunes is used more so those problems are gonna get more people stumbling over them, and the reason iPods and tethered to iTunes and visa verse is to stamp out the possibility of even more problems. One of the reasons Apple products are so good is because that every neighbour and his dog doesnt have a component or two stuck in it - the flaw in PCs. Less variables, less problems, less problems, more time to innovate.

  • oh no! you have to use an iPod with iTunes?

That sucks... wait, no it doesn't. Most every other piece of software sucks.

Do you really want to use the glitchy/easily virus-ridden Windows Media Player or the constantly-changing, increasingly-confusing winamp for your iPod? You can, but do you want to?

  • This is the problem with news reporters trying to ask questions about 'the internets' or technology as a whole. They know the big button turns the TV on, green light means go and clicking things makes stuff happen. It's truly saddening to know that we are being informed by the uninformed.

That right there is why the internet-based independent media outlets are going to kill broadcast and paper news, not because its easier, but because it's backed by some degree of knowledge.

  • Well. Sometimes I want to. Also I use Yamipod, Real Player (works great with my iPod)and even Windows Media Player 11 when I feel like it. Sometimes I want MORE control and POWER over my music collection/songs/videos than iTunes is gonna ever give me.

Apple software is good and easy to use, but sometimes is as bad as Microsoft. As matter of fact, I've had more problems with the lates OS X than with Windows Vista Ultimate.

  • Wow, that's embarrassing.

  • Why donʻt they show you the entire interview? He must have been asking a whole lot of nonesense questions to get ole philly boy pissed off looking like that. Even the starbucks weilding PR warriors had to save him from socking the reporter. Its definatly biased towards making Phil Schiller look like a prick. Oh well, my iphone is great, irreguardless...and who cares if iTunes comes along for the ride...thereʻs bigger issues in the world we should be contending with right now.

  • Ooo...Starbucks...

  • i think everyone in this video was being mean :( heheh

  • OMG @ 0:50, that yank girl has one long neck, wind it back in, woman!

  • we all knew apple sucked when they tried to copyright 'pod'

  • What's the big deal. Everybody already knows iPods are tied to iTunes, and you need to have an iPod to get the most out of iTunes.

  • Apple=New World Order

  • Oi. You a fan boy or something? Laugh a little.
