You obviously haven't read the book.. Andre speaks highly of Pete several times. However, he tries to communicate his real feelings toward every event and person as they actually were. It's called Open, so for him to just be polite and suck up to everyone involved in his tennis career would be hypocritical.

He is a role model in the sense that he achieved all his success through hard work and determination and did it with humility, dignity and class! He was never motivated by the money side of things...he was motivated by the history of the game! He turned down so many lucrative sponsorship deals during his career which so he could've made even more money but he chose to focus on tennis!
