I actually really got the lyrics in 505 and brainstorm from having a bad experience being lead on by a girl. without sounding too sappy those songs really spoke to me after that.

basically he's just rambling on the songs and how he writes them from his point of view or about himself. and then he goes on to tell a story about his experience observing people in sheffield and how it plays a role in his song writing.

Yorkshire accent. It's actually not hard to understand him. It's just sometimes he mumbles, kind of. But if he's saying things clearly, it's understandable. Hehe
Who Alex? lol, he's not really a typical Englishman, maybe a typical Yorkshire man... though I'm not sure there is such a thing. What is a typical Englishman like? I'd love to know :-p.
I think the guy at his left hand is looking and him and thinkin' "I don't understand the english of this man". Sorry, I am joking, as a student of english, and after staying in Liverpool I think I'll never understand english well.
I'm a North-Easterner, my accent is quite thick too. Yorkshire, and the North-East where it's hard to understand. Liverpool can be quite hard too because of the Scousers like. People from Abroad tend to find the London accent easier to understand. My ex is Japanese, and she learned English and London, I met her in Leeds and she couldn't understand anyone because they all have a similar accent to Alex in the video, lol. We ended up splitting up because she couldn't understand me either, lol.
In Britain there are many accents across the countries, and particularly the Yorkshire, North Eastern, and Scottish highland accents are very hard to understand at times. I'm from the North East of England, but literally 2 miles away from the Yorkshire border, and I live in Leeds these days in Yorkshire, so all the accents are easy for me. And I go to Scotland on holiday a lot, so that one too. English, when spoken by a Southerner, is easier for foreigners I think.
It sounds disgusting though, the American accent is too heavy on vowels and the R sound. The American accent is only easier to understand because we hear it so much on the TV. In Asia they don't get as much American TV, and from my experience they all prefer the London English accent.
You areabsolutely right on the thing you said about " the R sound". But I listen to British music much more than American and it's easier to get the American.
To me ( I'm French) it's like The British fake their accent. I know they don't but their accent seems so not natural
You probably just hear more of the American accent because of TV and films which makes it sound more natural. A lot of British music at the moment is northern, and we have a lot of very thick accents in the North lol (I'm also a northerner).
When you hear the Southern French accent (assuming you're from North of France here, like Paris or somewhere), does it sound put on?
lol, I tried to find regional French accents on youtube but couldn't find any, you should make a video and put on some different accents, it'd be really cool, :-p. Look up the geordie accent on youtube, for one that resembles people from where I'm from (most my family is Yorkshire though so I don't sound very geordie :-/).
A very specific accent is the one from Quebec ( Canada). You can hear it in the movie " C.R.A.Z.Y." that you can find on the channel of strollingdoll . When I saw this film on TV they put subtitles so that it could be understood by the French ( the Quebecois also have their own expressions which are sometimes taken from American vocabulary)
lol, I just looked up the Quebecois accent, it sounds to me like Americans speaking French, how very odd :-s. Most British accents are only found among the working classes, for some reason the Middle and upper classes all speak quite posh (though some more than others). You could probably understand most people in England, especially in the South, and as long as they're not from a poor background. Is France the same like that?
No. In fact I've heard in some movies people from upper classes speaking a kinda faked accent but I'never heard this accent in real life ( maybe it does exist ). There's a country-side accent ( in the Berry for example) : people roll the R's. Besides English do roll the R's sometimes , don't they?
In the Berry? Upper classes don't fake the accent... I don't know what it is, they just speak more classy, lol. You will have heard the accent, it's the standard BBC type accent. There isn't a countryside accent because it changes depending on where you are in the country, lol. I think you mean the Cornwall accent, that's where they roll their Rs, :-). Most English people don't really roll their Rs, just Cornish people :-p.
Ah okay, I thought you were talking about England, sorry. I've never really heard many French accents, but then again I've only been to France twice and both times I was too young to even know French... or English in the first case. I might go again at some point, and while I'm there I'll make sure to travel to the berry, and other places :-p.
Yeah, I realise that quebecois is Canadian, not American, but I have heard Americans speaking French, and it does sound similar. Maybe you could say they sound like English-speaking canadians speaking French, but then again, apart from the quebecois accent I've never heard a canadian speak French so I can't comment on that.
Sorry if I interrupt this conversation but I would just like to add that Quebecois and Americans speak French in a very different way to me, I mean listen to Celine Dion speaking in French and then to some American actor or singer or whatever, and you'll hear the difference.
(I'm French so I can tell you it's veeeeery different to us lol)
dont understand why people get so pissed about things like that i mean so what if he's high it really isn't anything. would you stop listening to them if you it turned out he was smoking weed? I wouldn't cuz who the fuck cares.
haha, I'm from yorkshire so to me it's all easy lol. He says at the beginning that in a lot of the songs when he sings about a specific person it's quite often a 3rd person view of himself. He's sayin that the meanings of their songs aren't just a reflection of sheffield but a reflection of people in general regardless of how they dress/what they listen to etc. Hope that helped :)
Then he is talking about a certain romance and how people have commented that its a snapshot of sheffield but really its an observation of everything of people [though he supposes that he can only observe people from sheffield cos thats where hes from].its not having a pop at sheffield its talking about certain type of people. etc. etc. it wouldnt fit in the comment.
he says that his lyrics do have an element of sneering but they can be a celebration. when he does sneer or make comments about characters in his songs its often himself he has been one or both characters in his lyrics. Eg. bigger boys and stolen sweethearts now hes grown up he can put himself in their roles. So hes not always sneering about stuff.
I have bo idea what he just said o.o

Quebecois don't sound like Amercans speaking French. They aren't even Americans.
Sure they don't have a pure dialect, but not many Americans (or even Canadians) can pull off Quebecois sounds. It's just too unnatural.
