Where did you learn Guitar at or how?

Hey, I'm a relatively good guitarist. So far, I've only played metal including August Burns Red, The Human Abstract, and Between the Buried and Me. But I've started writing my own stuff, and i've found that i sort of want to branch out away from metal and get into jazzy metal. Any suggestions on where i should start? It seems like this is more about actual theory rather than just what sounds good.

There aren't many guys on youtube covering these Goodrick and Diorio approaches. Thank you very much for sharing more modern ways of doing things on guitar.
