The Mongolians refer to this cat as a "manul", and it was only named "Pallas Cat" in 1776. I personally think it should be called by its Mongolian name rather than by the name of some European who stumbled upon it.
Domesticated dogs and cats are genetically different from their wild relatives. Scientists have done some fascinating experiments on taming animals, notably with foxes in Russia and rats in Germany. The fascinating thing is that in every animal selected for traits we consider tamed like lack of agression and friendliness with humans, animals become more "cute" and retain juvenile traits into adulthood.
By that definition WCSMedia, dogs are domestic whereas house cats are simply "tame". If house cats are not handled by humans as kittens they will grow up into untamable adult cats who are essentially wild. Pallas cats are close enough in size to house cats that while they *could* injure you, they really pose no more threat that a house cat AND both species are quite similar in their diets and habits.
Having just learned about the existence of this species of cat today, this video was helpful. These are very interesting cats. They're very cute. I agree that zoos are not bad places, so long as they're reputable zoos with staff who really care and are dedicated to the welfare of the animals in their care. And, the majority of the well-known zoos are actually dedicated to conservation of the animals in their care. I'm glad I got a chance to see the video and learn about this animal.
wonderful animal. People are always knocking the zoos but they forget that most animals on the CITES I and II lists are all going to disappear in the wild very soon - no doubt about it! There is nil chance of survival in the long term for most wild species. We should be encouraging and sponsoring the expansion of advanced zoos that attempt to recreate reasonably suitable conditions for so may wild species that will soon be altogether lost outside them.
so if i were to say: Animals can be domesticated, i would be wrong because stupid people dont know what domestication means? a pallas cat can be domesticated if raised from birth, the point is: If you dont have compensation within the fields of psychology and pedagogogy you should not be permitted to have pets or children. if raised right any higher standing animal (mammals) can be tamed completely, that doesnt mean anyone can walk in the door and pet it, just the "father" or "mother".
There is distinct difference between a "tamed" animal and species that has been domesticated. To be specific, domestication is process wheres certain traits are selected in species over generations and on a specific population. Taming is done to specific animal in specific conditions. Regardless, owning or "taming" a non-domesticated animal such as a Pallas' Cat is can be very dangerous.
i'm never using the word stupid again also i learned something. domestication is actually misused a lot which is why i was completely sure about what it ment, i even looked it up in two dictionaries to be sure, but you should give me credit for being right about the psychology, any "higher" standing animal will take after its parents, instincts do exist but they are no more present in animals then they are in us. and so no incompetant/uneducated person should have a child or own a pet.
i think i actually owned a set of 3 pallas, they look alot..ALOT like them and none of them would let you hold em , they were all very good mousers/bird catchers and they actually chitter when they see birds... 2 are gone..1 died on march 21st and other ran away ages ago =( .. if i sent you a pic of em you think you could tell me if they might be, they have a different coat but they seem to act and have the body of those fluffers. they were actually fluffy as them though.
Damn look at those....

They would make a great pet, my old cat is about 10x more vicious than that one.

Правильно ли я понял, что манульчеги не поддаются одомашниванию, ибо злы и коварны?

Did you know that the "Ashera" cat was a SCAM? They were just Savannah cats repackaged and sold for many times more than they were worth.
I also wish the best of luck to all breeding programs that are maintaining many endangered species.

One of the Pallas cats that used to live in the Philadelphia Zoo recognized my son every time we visited (about once a week) and "chirped" at him.
We always liked to think that meant it would like to come home with us and by our pet. But the keeper told us, no, it probably didn't mean that!
