@AWSOMELYRAW Actually while they do eat the bad flesh in cases such as this where there is not enough bad flesh to sustain the maggots until they mature into a fly they will in fact continue to devore the poor lizard until he has provided enough sustenance for them to fully mature. The reason maggot therapy works is because the doctors remove the maggots after a couple of days of eating the dead flesh if left to their own devices the maggots will continue to gorge themselves until maturity

People use maggots on their own wounds all the time, they're actually very clean and helpful. If they eat what's dead and harmful, the lizard has a better chance to become healthy again and survive. Even without the maggots, what could you do but kill the poor thing so it wouldn't suffer?

@pureefficient I would have to say that if the eggs are being eaten its because the flys see the egg shell, yoke and other internal liquids as a literal buffet and killing the turtle inside is a side effect of them breaking the eggs outer seal and with the egg destroyed the turtle dies leaving even more dead or dieing flesh.

The lizard might just have survived. Most maggots eat only dead flesh. The would probably wasn't caused by the maggots, most likely it was something else and it got infected... then the maggots would go in, clean a lot of it up (which is not benevolence, it just suits them) and get out... and leave it to the reptile's known regenerative capabilities. Big wound? Yes. But if it didn't kill the lizard while it was infected and with maggots inside of it, won't kill it either when it's clean.
